After playing the game for a while, there's been zero mentions of the divine beasts, the champions, Sheikah technology, or that Calamity Ganon was defeated back in BotW which is actually odd since you'd think those things would at least be mentioned in passing. While playing the last game gives some slight context and let's you recognize some characters that show up again, I would say it's not necessary to play BotW before TotK and it might actually be better that way gameplay-wise since you won't already be familiar with the overworld even if they changed it a decent bit
