Hi friends, I would like to ask you a few questions.
I've been determined to do my reps for a while now and not rely on translated clips or summary friend. I'm trying to learn as much as I can with anki, but I'm not sure if I'm using it correctly.
Right now I'm with these 3 decks (don't count tango N4), 10 new words per day with core 2.3k and tango N5 because I'm having a hard time memorizing everything and 20 in the jlab, the rest of the settings as recommended in the rentry.
My first question is what rules of thumb should I use for the "again, hard, good, easy" because I feel like I'm not using it correctly; basically, when should I consider a daily session to end? Many times I just close anki for the day to stop hitting "good" to the same words, I don't want it to think I know more than I do, does that make sense? I'm a bit lost on that, never used anki before.
And the other question is how should I supplement my reps. I have yomichan in the browser (although I'm not using it practically at all) and I have no idea how to create decks or why really (I honestly don't understand half of the tools described in the rentry). Maybe you can guide me a bit on what to do or tell me what else you guys did at my level. I have no issues with kana btw
Thanks! Especially to the anon who made the rentry, it motivated me to start for good!

Hi friend! First of all, congratulations on starting, that's the biggest hurdle out of the way already. You generally don't want to use easy at all and use hard very sparsely if at all. It's much simpler to keep it binary - either you knew well enough it or you don't and it needs to be repeated. I'm not sure I understand what you mean by "to stop hitting "good" to the same words, I don't want it to think I know more than I do". A daily session is supposed to end when you have no cards left scheduled for that day. If you have done your 10 news card from the day and any accumulated reviews scheduled for that day, you are done with the deck for the day and no new cards should be available to review. If you are just starting out and are doing 10 new cards a day per deck, that shouldn't take you all that long.
I'm not sure what rentry you are talking about, by the way, but I'm the one that wrote up the reps Pastebin in the thread's OP. It's been a while since I reread it but I feel like I addressed many of the questions you are asking here, so I suggest reading it if you haven't already. As for what to supplement your current reps with at your current level, that's difficult to say because you never really mentioned how long you've been doing this or how deep into these decks you are at this point. I'd generally advice trying to watch Japanese subtitled content as it's the fastest way to improve your vocabulary by mining words and training your listening comprehension and reading comprehension at the same time, but it might be too hard if you are literally just starting out just now.

I confused pastebin with rentry lol. But yes! I was referring to the pastebin you wrote
>First of all, congratulations on starting, that's the biggest hurdle out of the way already
Well, thanks to you, it helps a lot to have such a clear and simple guide on how to get started, I really appreciate that. I guess my issue, more than not understanding the guide, is not understanding anki, it seems I've been using it wrong (not that much but enough to confuse myself) but I get it now.
About my level, I started for real with this method about two weeks ago. I'd like to think that I know a fair bit of vocabulary, although kanji in general and as a concept give me lots and lots of headaches. I've known hiragana and katakana for a long time, though, I've "tried to learn" Japanese in the past through grammar books and free courses, but I got frustrated (I didn't know HL or foobs at the time). You know those fools who recognize random words and thinks "she's talking about this!" but has absolutely no idea what she's really saying? That's me, I want to end that.
So far, I love this method, not paying much attention to grammar and just learning by intuition and repetition. I feel that I learned more in two weeks with anki and these decks than I did in months of "minna no nihongo".
Anyhow, what kind of japanese subtitled content would you recommend?

I've been using Anki on and off for like a decade before I started getting serious and using it daily for Japanese so it feels natural to me by now, but I'll try to give a very brief and simplified explanation: You learn new ten words today, and then they come back as a review one day later. If you get them right one day later, they come back two days later, then if you get them right again, four days, a week, two weeks, a month etc. Some of my earliest cards that I know very well won't come back until 2027. The more you get the card right, the longer the interval will be because the program expects you to know the content of the card very well if you get it right many times in a row, so you don't need to see that card very often anymore for it to stay in your memory. If you get a card wrong at some point, you lose some of your progress in this card and it will come back sooner. How much progress you lose depends on your Anki settings, if you have read the guide you should have hopefully changed the default settings because they are not very good (by default, a single mistake would make you lose all the progress on a card but this is nonsensical because momentary lapses of memories are natural). So the more you get cards wrong, the more you see them, which gives you more opportunities to finally memorize them. The algorithm is designed so that you should always finish all your reviews every day until there are none left for the day, otherwise they will pile up and you will review words that were actually due a few days ago too late and this poses the risk that you might forget them by the time you actually do get around to reviewing them. You should probably take the time to at least skim the Anki manual at some point, it elaborates much further and gives you good explanation on many of its features: https://docs.ankiweb.net/

As for what to watch with Japanese subtitles, that depends entirely on what you like. Common sense would be to watch some sort of slice of life anime with relatively mundane setting so you don't encounter too much eccentric vocabulary. You'll do much better with your meager beginner deck vocabulary in some sort of school setting than in a fantasy or sci-fi one for example. It's probably also not a bad idea to watch something you have already seen before so you have some additional hints to help you fill the gaps and understand better. I think one of the first shows I tried watching was K-On! for example. But don't force yourself to watch stuff you consider boring as you'll lose motivation quick. I watched a lot of stuff that was probably way too difficult at my level back at the beginning as well, as long as you have a high tolerance for frustration and ambiguity and a lot of patience, it will work out fine. Anyway, I think I only really started doing this after like 6 months, though, so it might be too early for you, but it's definitely worth a try if you are motivated. Definitely read the section on mining in the guide again if you do, I recommend setting up Memento if you try to watch something, it's a pretty good tool to look up words while watching and mine cards from the content very easily.

Thanks for taking the time to reply, friend. For some reason I was ending my sessions early because I thought it didn't stop on its own
One of my goals, besides being able to understand Fubuki, is to play Clannad, Muv Luv or Steins;Gate in Japanese. So I'll probably try to use the program you mention in the pastebin, ShareX I think, to play simple 3-4 hour VNs and work my way up in complexity too. Once I have a good foundation, of course, because I don't think I'll be able to do any of this for a while kek

All "Core" Anki decks are based on newspapers from early 90s and sometimes additionally sorted in a way that makes learning harder. The format of the cards also tends to be WCC instead of a more efficient TSC. Ankidrone Starter Pack is made from a COMPLETELY different corpus ー everyday words used commonly in Japan. You should use Ankidrone Starter Pack.
Also drop anything with m*way in it because that guy doesn't know japanese.

> My first question is what rules of thumb should I use for the "again, hard, good, easy"

I recommend reading all of it.

to create a new deck you can open anki and press "create deck". but you probably mean something else.

honest answer: never look at any of the "guides" or garbage people peddle
as for how to answer: dont overthink it, theres people that say using easy and hard are bad but the fact is that most everything in that deck you will outgrow really fast and end up deleting
so just be honest, was it easy, click that, hard click that
itll show you the things you hit hard on more often but eventually theyll be easy too and youll just recognize them as soon you see them, so again don't overthink it
all premade decks are garbage anyway
learn to use japanese ime and just google works when you find them/make your own deck, again for that people overthink it, you just need the word on the front (in kana/kanji), and the reading/meaning on the back) (i keep everything in japanese but you can do whatever works for you it really doesnt matter)
most of your growth, and your best and fastest growth will just come from listening to streams
itll take you 6 months or less to sorta make out what chuubas say
rpg streams are really good practice, just read as fubuki or okayu or watame or subaru or koyori do
good luck!

Garbage or not, these guides are helping me to get started, so. With more experience and trying things out, I'lll see if I continue using certain tools people recommend or not, I do not adhere to a guide as a law anyway. The thing is that I'm just starting, and I was a bit lost. I imagine that everyone has their own way of doing it, some in a more "fashionable" way, others in a more "efficient" and coarse way, etc. But it's good to ask and explore to eventually find my own. While I agree with most of what you said I still wouldn't recommend using easy much because using easy on a card even like two or three times will make it so you won't see it for months because it's more or less exponential and, especially at the very early stages, you'll forget a lot still. Hard isn't that bad because you'll just see it a little more often which isn't really all that consequential, just a little inefficient. I use hard occasionally but never easy.
I agree that around 6 months is a decent timeframe when you can expect to notice you understand quite a bit, that's what it was like for me as well.
In the end, guides are not the bible and are just meant to convey you a variety of different methods, tools and approaches that you weren't aware of before, you'll have to experiment and decide for yourself which ones work best for you. The thing I wrote in the pastebin months ago was because someone was asking here how to get started so I wanted to give a comprehensive overview of things I use and am aware of, it's more of a compilation of different things that might be useful and stuff to watch out for rather than original content. I think I'd have quit my reps within a few months (and have in the past when I used Anki for different things than Japanese) if I never figured out to change the "New Interval" modifier in Anki, for example, it's just brutally punishing if you leave it on default.
>>46741711
I heavily disagree with Yomichan being a crutch, it's the most useful tool you have to help you understand, especially at the beginning when you are likely to encounter a new word almost every sentence. What do you to when you encounter a word you don't know? Do you go to jisho or another dictionary site to look it up and then manually create a card in Anki for it? That's just a few extra steps for exactly the same result and a waste of time. With Yomichan I just click on a button and I have a card with definitions in English and Japanese and frequencies and all these kind of things ready within one second.

Don't worry, I didn't take any, I just felt the need to express that some guidance can be very useful if you have absolutely no idea what you're doing or where to start. Like many others, I wasted months upon months doing Duolingo and similar bullshit and retained absolutely nothing until I stumbled upon all of this in the /jp/ thread.
As for Yomichan, I guess it's by no means essential, in the end everyone has their own techniques. I agree it can be a crutch if you use it wrong, i.e. to look up every word and forgetting them immediately without mining and reviewing them later, but I'd still recommend giving it a shot as a beginner. My mining deck has like 15,000 cards, I can't imagine how much longer it would have taken me to make those without that tool.

One major advantage you have if you are doing your reps primarily to understand your Oshi is that watching streams already gets you plenty of immersion in content that you can't use any of these shortcuts for by necessity, so your input is already more balanced than most other learners and it matters less what other content you use for mining etc.

Maybe she won't even get one, these days when they sort them by generations she's considered Gen 1 rather than Gamers more often than not.

I doubt that's something she'd ever even consider doing, I feel like she'd dread being embarrassed (except on her own terms) and also doesn't wouldn't want to cause trouble for her mother either. She has always been quite private about her private life and never really shared all that much, but I feel like that has changed a little lately. She used to barely ever speak about her family other than Anigitsune but she has been talking about Mamagitsune and what she's like quite a bit this year and even started talking about Papagitsune a bit during yesterday's Tsubooji. I wonder what caused her to change her mind after so long.

I mean yeah, she's still a beginner and this is her second serious practice stream so that's no big surprise. But I meant in general, it feels like garbage is much less consequential for Tetris players because it doesn't actively stop you from playing while even the smallest amount of garbagecan be pretty disruptive for Puyo players. I feel like that isn't balanced out by huge Puyo combos doing massive damage because they're much harder to do because Tetris can just continuously send small amount of trash your way, but what do I know.

I agree with you. I also don't think Puyo vs. Tetris is a balanced match for the same reasons. Tetris players don't have much trouble clearing those garbage tile rows, whereas Puyo players might have trouble scoring combos with just about any amount of garbage tiles. A JP chatter said that Puyo is supposed to be the easier one as it only requires 4 blocks of the same color to score, so it has a slight disadvantage against Tetris. I haven't played either, so I could be wrong. Using ググルくん on most online forums shows me that Tetris is godly against Puyo at high levels of gameplay, so maybe the same applies to low-to-basic levels of play.

agreed, I can’t see puyo player can match up tetris player at high level
Since garbage on puyo side will stop puyo player from playing combo and slow them down, while garbage on Tetris doesn’t affect Tetris player combo
If tetris player is skilled and play fast enough, it will stop puyo from preparing combo and attacking
But i think balance should be fine at low level

>>46847675
Yeah, it's better to just leave it as it is. It's not really useful to translate these recurring greetings, especially not into something as nonsensical as what they have. I think the official website has (or had at one point) "A foxy day to you" for kon kon kitsune which at least makes a little more sense but I still hate it because it sounds stupid and makes the entire kon/corn concept a non sequitur for EOPs by localizing away all references to it. Except for "Sucorns" for Sukonbu where they decided to emphasize it even more for some bizarre reason. It really makes no sense to change things like that or names that will come up over and over again in her streams, it feels really artificial. At least they kept Oruyanke as it is instead of calling him "Thereheis" or some shit like that.

So apparently it's all finished up now. I'll wait for the anon to post later and get the link here. She sung a lot of anime ops apparently and was also playing around with her model a lot, putting stuff on her. Plus, she even sung japanese goblin... starting to regret not going a bit.

Seems to be about what I expected, I kind of doubted they would have her come to the studio and perform in 3D this early in the morning for such a seemingly small audience. I thought it was a collab with the rodents instead of three individual streams in succession for some reason, so that's nice that she got a little more attention by herself. Also neat that she played up the meme things for that audience in a bit to make up for her lack of ability to communicate properly. How long was her segment?

So this is the link the guy sent, fubuki starts at abot 1:24:00. A warning, the quality is really bad as there's definitely no good recording of this, so a lot of screams are gonna be heard and not great audio from the tv. Plus there's no visuals so fubuki's gags aren't gonna be seen, though you might be able to make out what she's doing if you understand her. For some reason a lot of girls got really screamy during her part apparently when compared to the others, guess there's a lot oj both sides of the spectrum that wqtch fubuki.

I should probably ask the bakatare general this but currently its not in the catalog. Didn't their anniversary come up by now, did they not do anything this year? I know there hasn't been a collab in a while but I would've figured they would do something, maybe I'm just misremembering the date?

You're right, it went by without acknowledgement, their anniversary live was on February 24 last year: https://www.youtube.com/live/hQB206l932M
I guess it's just not a huge thing for them and I don't think they celebrated their first anniversary, either. Last year's live was probably just an excuse for them to have an event together but not a priority this year.

The figure deattached from the arm thing and fell on the top of its head while I was adjusting its position. Was a small fall onto a soft surface so I guess it is a somewhat fragile part. I would consider gluing it back on or something if I could find where the piece flew off to.

That's an unfortunate series of events. I hope you can find and fix it! I'm guessing that's also the reason her 2019 figure was endlessly delayed and ended up with such a massive and oddly shaped ahoge. These things sure are fragile.

The most likely answer. When she said she was going to take the day off to catch up some anime on Sunday that probably implicitly included today as well.
