What's the etiquette like for paying artists? I'm in contact with a seemingly reputable artist for the first time who offers both half at start and half at end or all up front. The buyer has 6 months (last I checked) to completely chargeback the payment and can do so with absolutely no legal consequences. The artist is powerless to prevent this, all they can do is refuse to work with you again.

It's more complex but yes, somewhat. The USB version includes a smaller and cheaper audio interface in its body so it affects it's performance but you can use it by itself.
With XLR mics you can use additional physical equipment to pre-process the audio before it even reaches your computer. Having a separate audio interface also means you can reuse it with several microphones since it is a separate thing.
An analogy would be laptop vs desktop. But you don't need an XLR mic to be a good streamer, I watch 1k ccv fleshies whose mic sounds worse than mine.

I have a long list of books that will take many years to get through and I figured why read them alone in my room when I could share my reading with others who may be interested.
Of course there's not much audience in that sort of content, but that's okay, I've been enjoying having to read aloud and enunciate more clearly, it helps with speaking as well as comprehension.

Speaking of audio interfaces, it's probably alright to buy them secondhand if you're looking to buy an XLR mic. I don't know about buying the mic secondhand itself but an audio interface is like a brick and mine hasn't experienced any wear and tear.

The question of youtube videos vs streaming is a matter of tone I think.
If I were to make a youtube video, there would be an expectation to edit and do multiple takes to make a pretty and refined audiobook.
But a livestream is more casual, informal. I stumble on my words, I take breaks to eat a sandwich, I break off onto tangents about a phrase in the book, that's all find in a livestream.

It's not for everyone, but there's nothing wrong with streaming to the void, and who knows maybe if I manage to stick with it for a few years I'll snag a small handful of niche viewers.
I do sometimes comment on the book, but I don't think it's necessary to be so rigourous, I see reading the same way as watching a movie or playing a game, when you finish it, it's not necessary to write a review. You enjoyed your time and that's all that matters.

The interaction with the chat is a valid point though, I think it's difficult for people to talk with the viewer when they're in the middle of a sentence. It's similar to a collab in that way, but instead of the streamer interacting with another person, they're interacting with a book.
But I've watched a number of reading streams by other people and they seem to manage the interaction issue just fine so I think it's just a matter of finding the balance between reading the book and reading the chat.

As an anon who's seriously into literature, I do think there is a niche for what you're doing for people who care about the subject as well, but I'd be more inclined to watch your stream if you had the actual book up on screen so we could follow along, or at the very least a page number. You could even highlight passages as you go along and talk about it then and there, or go back to them at end of the stream. Another idea would be to have notepad or text-to-screen program running where you can write down thoughts and quotes during "sandwich breaks" for instance. Your target audience could be university students who miss a reading partner, or simply people who are interested in classics, but don't know where and how to start with it.
I understand all of these things might come eventually since you're totally new to it all, and I guess what you're doing now can be seen as " reading reps" before you branch out to something a bit more delibarate and audience-friendly. Having the text up on the screen is definitely a thing I should do with the books that I have in pdf format. It's much easier to follow along with the reader when you can see the page.
The various other ideas for adding interest and discussion are good ideas as well although I think they would be better suited for second-reads of books as opposed to first-reads, since I often don't fully understand a book until much much later.
I've been enjoying the greek plays so far and already there have been some that I want to read again. I think when that time comes a good idea would be to create some more elaborate assets to give visual interest to the reading. Things like character drawings, backgrounds, that sort of thing.
