Albeit Barkeep will generally always take the opportunity to attempt to initiate the transformation if possible, it does not have a Paperclip-type drive to do so, as exemplified by Barkeep instance #57 (formerly Ettore Majorana), who has been continuing their work on physics of neutrinos and antineutrinos and share its findings with our researchers freely without demanding to allow the transformation of other individuals in exchange (SECURITY WARNING: any agent or freelancer that would suggest an idea of this nature to a Barkeep instance will be immediately executed). The way Barkeep transformation works is by touching with her (OBSOLETE INFORMATION: bare) hands a container (OBSOLETE INFORMATION: currently holding ethyl alcohol) that will at a later point contain ethyl alcohol. The fingertips of a Barkeep instance secrete trace amounts of liquid, referred to as "Barkeep Spit", that forms a thin biofilm, particularly effectively on glass, that is very difficult to detect by nonspecialized means (no noticeable taste, odor or texture). The biofilm will react immediately to the presence of alcohol, causing a short-lived effect similar to that of a sizzling carbonated drink (though the bubbles have been found to be hydrogen and not carbon dioxide). The resulted liquid, referred to as "Barkeep Juice", is identical in taste to the original and capable of inducing an effect similar to the alcohol poisoning the same dose of the original would taste, but with an overall milder hangover. However, some time after the ingestion of Barkeep Juice, transformation will inevitably begin (unless arrested, voluntarily or accidentally).

The speed at which a given subject will transform into a Barkeep depends on biological and mental divergence from Barkeep — a female-presenting Aes Sidhe human variant will take less than 12 hours (CLARIFICATION: this is only derived from a dataset of two), for example. A biological-male mental-male Homo Sapiens Sapiens individual will transform through a period of three to four months, simultaneously biologically and mentally. An individual will first start acquiring some of Barkeep's character traits (the first of them is inevitably desire to consume large amounts of alcohol, which will speed up the transformation if the alcohol available is actually Barkeep Juice), then will become gradually more mentally as well as biologically female — a process that brings individuals an intense feeling that is described as a combination of sexual pleasure and being highly intoxicated (even when the individual is not currently consuming alcohol or Barkeep Juice). Neither the passerby nor the individual generally notice anything unusual happening, unless it is already too late, at which point the individual will be content with it happening (a common idiosyncrasy is taking daily measurements of one's own chest area and comparing it to Barkeep's, which the individual will know at this point). Biologically female individuals will find their body proportions reshaped to match those of Barkeep, and mentally female individuals will have their personality traits rewritten. At the end of the transformation the original personality is completely erased, and the body is inhabited with another instance of Barkeep, albeit possessing the complete memories and knowledge of an individual at the moment prior to the transformation.

Barkeep instances contained by Cover Corp. generally have knowledge and skills that are of high value, and their cooperation is highly appreciated. Barkeep instances that are not permitted human contact in the form of mutual drinking will rapidly become uncooperative and throw tantrums likely to damage their contanment cells. A Barkeep's tolerance for alcohol is, while above the human norms, still comparable to them, and it will get intoxicated much in the way that a human-variant can, which also aids in their cooperation. Whereas a single Barkeep instance will simply try to find a job where they handle as many alcohol or alcohol-holding containers as possible, Barkeep nests will generally hatch more complex schemes aimed at transforming higher amounts of people. Currently, many Barkeep nests are aware of our agents and find it impertient to first destroy or subsume as many of our agents as possible before proceeding with the transformation of the entire Earth into Barkeep instances. One must be aware that, for instance, a shard of glass dipped in liquid Barkeep Juice retains the ability to convey transformation and can be thrown at great lengths. Willingly undergoing Barkeep transformation has been briefly considered but is currently not permitted in all instances. We currently have sufficient data on the transformation process of default human variants and, while the Barkeep process does transform a Homo Sapiens Sapiens (average maximum longevity: 100 years) into an Aes Sidhe variant (average maximum longevity: not known, possibly not applicable), this is not suitable for the Hands Across Eternity project, as the process does not truly prolong one's life — on the opposite, it kills everyone who undergo it, creating an instance of Barkeep in their stead.

The sole known method of arresting the process of Barkeep transformation, which must be administered before the individual has undergone any physical transformation at all, is methyl alcohol (methanol) poisoning. The other, well-known effects of methanol poisoning will still be in effect. Every agent must quickly make their own choice of whether to live with the consequences of having underwent methanol poisoning or enjoy their independent will for a short while before being transformed into Barkeep. Any amount of blue hair on an individual that did not previously have blue hair is a clear mark that it is already too late.

The problem is that they aren't actually well-rounded or smart, but they want to act like it, and act in ways that other people like them will immediately recognize, so they essentially cargo-cult hard rules for what smart people do into existence.

Given that most literature written today is genre fiction, imagine if /v/ had a single thread dedicated to games not made exclusively for Nintendo consoles.

Enter Terry Pratchett. A man more or less universally beloved for his writing, actually knighted for it, his influence extending far outside of genre fiction yet he exists unapologetically within it, even frequently making fun of his colleagues such as JKR for trying to distance himself from it. And moot, not understanding /lit/s board culture, pins the thread dedicated to this... genre writer. On a board dedicated to books where you can unironically say teaching the unwashed masses how to read and write was an unforced error, and it wouldn't even be a weird opinion.

Starlight gleams brightly off the hull of The Seventeenth Litany as it proudly glides through the void. A ship of unimaginable age with a collection of artifacts and accolades millenniums in the making much like any other flagship serving the many Rogue Trader Dynasties of the Imperium. It is not the greatest of voidships, still dwarfed by many under the command of the Imperial Navy and of more influential dynasties. Despite it all it stands with an equal level of defiance to match even the greatest Emperor-class Battleships.

Its equally proud captain and head of their dynasty, Hosho Marinas, sits upon her throne on the Seventeenth’s bridge. Rather young for a woman of her rank but still covered in a panoply of war and air of refinement fitting for a Rogue Trader. A woman in her late tw-A woman with a young physique granted by rejuvenation treatments and archaotech who is never found wanting in the face of duty.

Accompanying Marinas as the bridge crew of the Seventeenth is a collection of personnel that matches the plethora of artifacts aboard the ship. A source of deep pride of the captain and highly heretical in the eyes of any Imperial authority with only the ancient Hosho Writ of Trade sparing Marinas from the prying eyes of the Holy Inquisition, scrutiny of the Administratum, and judgement of the Ecclesiarchy.

The most standard of this motley crew is a canoness from the Sisters of Battle, Shirogane Noelle of the Order of Knighty Brawn. A holy warrior of immense strength wielding a sanctified power mace. Her unmatched skill at arms have laid low many a daemon, xeno and heretic. Noelle and her Order serve loyally under the command of Rogue Trader Marinas following the fall of the Order’s original convent.

In this crew also stands Usadine Pecora, a rodent-based abhuman most similar to Holy Terra’s mythological rabbits. Supposedly of Lunar descent from Luna’s ancient gene cults like the rest of her kind upon the Seventeenth. Her unique talents, mentality and physiology continues time and time again to be useful to Marinas in her many adventures and expeditions however unorthodox and quite frankly inhumane they could be at times.

Another of her bridge crew is Shei’ranoi Fla’ir, a rogue “Farseer '' from the Aeldari. A xeno race that, as far as Imperial records are concerned, are all untrustworthy, self-absorbed knife-eared witches. Fla’ir and her retinue of rangers however have faithfully served the young Captain and seen her through many trials. She is also known to be a prime example of the Aeldari’s alluring alien beauty, catching the eyes of many a man, woman and most certainly our aforementioned canoness.

Finally one of the most perplexing additions to the Seventeenth’s crew is a Necron Overlord, a “female” one at that, by the name of Uruhakht Rosiah. Like most of her xeno race are, once again according to Imperial records, a race of soulless constructs made of self-repairing xeno metal who are unimaginably old. The main drive it seems to why Rosiah and her court of Immortals follow the dictates of the Seventeenth is a mutual infatuation between her and Captain Marinas.

These four have seen the young rogue trader through many challenges, dangers, and trials in her service and will likely see her through many more. The galaxy and the Warp offer many horrors but Emperor willing, together the crew will see that The Seventeenth Litany stands for millennia.

I've been struggling to keep it going with middling success in between real life stuff fucking me over. They fix the errors that your eyes missed, not the ones that your brain can't fix. You get a novel published by sending it to a literary agent, and it should be as error-free as possible already. If something like your dialogue punctuation is """non-standard""" (grammatically incorrect) throughout the novel, they will pass on it because they have a plethora of manuscripts to use that do have proper punctuation. Once they accept your novel, they give it to their agency's editors to polish up so they can send it to publishers for consideration. Then, if a publisher accepts it, they will polish it up more for the final copy.

tl;dr You will not get an editor if your product is bad to begin with, unless you hire a shoddy one on Fiverr or Upwork.

Character- or plot-work is a skill that develops alongside prose. If the grammar usage isn't good, it's a sign that the author is probably very new and can't construct a plot either.

I have a big stack of professionally edited books to go through that are almost guaranteed to have characters that are just as good.
