As a project here, we could simply develop cards and a game mechanism, or we could go full retard and make an RPG in the lore-world of Kawaii, wherein the story and combat focus around this card game, or the mechanisms of the card game. For example, in MTG, players are supposed to be "planeswalkers" who can summon monsters and cast spells. An MTG duel is thus simply a mutual match of the abilities of two planeswalkers. For an RPG game, facing an enemy in game can be done through the card game interface, but in-game, the characters perceive the battle to be real.

I don't think it would require any coding really unless we wanted to have some kind of software to automate certain processes. The game itself could be played in any of a dozen already available virtual table top programs. The real work would be coming up with a set of rules for how the game would be played and then coming up with cards that would be fun to interact with that rule set.

I think the first thing we would need to come up with is a theme for the game aside from it being Kawaii themed. YuGiOh has it's whole ancient egyptian monsters fighting each-other and sending duelists to the shadow-realm shtick. Magic: The Gathering is about interdimensional wizards casting spells at one another until they die. The Pokemon TCG is a trainer battle.

The card design and rule sets for these games flow out of their overarching concept. What would a kawaii game be about? Are the players auditioning to get into the next gen and are playing cards to boost their appeal as prospects? Are they chatters battling for the attention of their Oshi?
Card Games don't have to be conflict driven though, there are cooperative card games where the players work together to try and overcome some hurdle set by the rules and they win or lose based on if they can beat the game.

Should I be wary of any of the Kawaii talents?

If we do a duel-based TCG, most decks have 40 cards with max duplicates being 3-4, so maybe like 15-16 cards, multiply that by 11 girls and thats nearly 200 cards, while in a more rpg/cooperative card game, you'd have 11 characters with also maybe like 5-6 specific cards and many more generic cards shared between them, but then you'd also need to make something for them to be playing against

Just going to write up a mock idea reading these posts.
The theme of the game is an idol showdown.
Card makeup is idol cards, accessory cards, performance cards, and sabotage cards.
Idol cards are the kawaii members. There can only be a total of three idol cards on the stage (field) at any one time for each players stages. If you want to play another idol card you would have to remove an idol card on your stage to maintain the three total. Each idol card will have effects that can be used to either give yourself an advantage or deliver a negative effect to your opponent. There can also be requirements to use specific effects for advanced game play.
Accessory cards are thing like outfits, jewelry, pretty much anything that goes into the idol costume. Accessory cards are equip cards that will be placed on the idol cards you control. They will deliver beneficial effects and can be used as a parameter to unlock additional effects on the idol card.
Performance cards have to do with the performance itself. Stage lighting, special effects, crowd enhancement, it can even be a special event that happens during the performance that adds a positive effect. These cards are one time use and must make it to the start of your next turn.
Sabotage cards have to do with affecting your opponents idol show. Examples include: break a leg where an opponents idol is removed from the stage, technical difficulty which will remove a performance card from the stage, wardrobe malfunction which will remove an accessory card from your opponent's idol. All these cards are one time use.
The goal of the game is to reach a specific number of points before your opponent. These points are accumulated from your idols, their accessories, and the performance cards. Points are tabulated from your field at the end of your opponents turn. This is to give your opponent an opportunity to sabotage your performance.

That's probably true, the more working parts you throw in to getting people to be able to play the thing the less they're going to want to be assed to do it.


So that all being said. If people want to just throw out ideas until we we find something that sounds fun to start pushing forward with that would be great. Nothing has to be specific just ideas, everything can be refined, or altered over time we just need a starting point.

What if there was like a set of challange or objective cards in a deck that the players randomly drew from at the beginning of the game and all of the players had to work together to try and meet those objectives using the cards in their deck. Players could have a kind of "leader" card that's one of the kawaii girl that offers benefits to particular deck types so that you'd have a Shee based deck or a Reina based deck and they would specialize in meeting different objectives or the same objective in different ways.
Maybe you have to meet the objectives within a certain number of turns and if you can't that's how you lose.

What if we combined these two ideas just removing the sabotage aspect - OR we move them into the challenge deck. Like there's a community point total everyone is trying to raise and at certain point thresholds (like every 100 points or whatever) whoevers turn it is when that threshhold is met they have to play a card from the challange deck and it will either negatively effect them or all the players at once.

Why are any card games popular?
Imagine if poker had a new suit come out once a year and new types of cards added to the 52 card deck? What if you could win a game by having a Royal Treasury where you have a hand that were some combination of face cards from Coins, Cups and Wands.

The issue with any game is that you need a constant force working against you. In competitive games that will be your opponent, but in cooperative games you need a sort of game master. The simplest solution would be a deck of yabs. Think chance cards in Monopoly, except they're all bad. You also need to tune it appropriately because if the game itself doesn't hit back hard enough it's just a waiting game to win and that's boring. Have it hit too hard back and it becomes frustrating and no one wants to waste time on a slow slog.
