The idea that she causes harm to trans people comes from the logic that someone with such a large following speaking against trans people lowers the amount of acceptance and raises the amount of hate leading to them being harassed or attacked more.
J. K. Rowling has in the past referenced her royalty checks as vague justification for her views, essentially saying that upsetting people doesn't matter to her as long as she gets large royalty checks so it's kind of her fault that financially supporting Harry potter products is tied to agreeing with her views, even if most people wouldn't view it that way.
I think a lot of the harassment issues come from just how connected everyone on the internet is. If you take one person being upset or disappointed, them expressing that nonviolently doesn't seem like much of an issue and is something someone could think about, but when thousands of people do it suddenly it becomes a mass of negativity that is more than people are meant to bare and there is no hope of anything productive coming from it. The thousands of people aren't as exposed to the mass, so it doesn't deter them and it's just the public figure getting bombarded. Add in that in any group that large there are going to be a few crazies and especially when it's such an emotionally charged topic, some people are going to go way too far. Now there are thousands of people mentally getting associated with the worst of them and no one should have to handle that stress.
