That is the part that gets me, they are literally thrusting themselves into people's day to day lives and hobbies and demanding purity tests. They may be a handful of 'converts' but by and large there efforts will backfire amazingly. Rather than an overwhelming silent majority who are indifferent but who may over time become more gradually accepting and more supportive, you're living a bad taste in their mouths that will linger and color their impressions. I think it was one of those things where you had to be there at the right time, age and friends to really fall into it hard. I remember it being a big deal that it was even bigger than LOTR when the first couple films from each released near enough together. As the series went on I think it faded a bit or at least I was more neutral on it. From the start I was more into LOTR but I had some appreciation for the first couple HP films and borrowed my older sister's books to read the first 3 HP novels. I only got through a small part of the fourth one before I burnt out and decided it just wasn't for me. I was probably just a wee bit too old to be in the target group that truly fell in love for it.

The thing about Harry Potter that's interesting and probably why it causes such controversy specifically is it created an entire generation of trannies who then grew up to find out the author hated them. The people who hate it were also the people who loved it. So they have much more investment behind their anger but they also have their own friends and allies who want to cling onto the franchise.
