Since it's been three years since this chart was made, let's all reminisce about the good old days and yell at all the whippersnappers going on about their new VLivers.

dropped it mid 2019 when most vtubers became these weird shill channels where they endlessly promote mobile apps that will never be available overseas. I was sick of Yomemi shilling shitty mobile games where I had to pay for gacha rolls. Came back on /jp/ mid february just to see the death of /vyt/. Can't really blame them. Part of what made vtubing popular are the free translations the community provides. Youtube unfortunately removed that feature partly because of the rampant translator drama behind the scenes. Not vtuber related but there was a point where the fucking translations of the music video "Say It" by Yorushika became a battlefield because some retarded SEAnigger changed them in broken English. It was honestly so fucking annoying. That's also the start of SEAnigger hate meme in baacharu chuuba circles if you aren't aware of it yet. The removal of community translations was most definitely the death blow for these 1st generation chuubas, those ones who started their vtuber careers because of Kizuna Ai. Only truly came back during the HoloEN debuts with the intention of laughing at the idea of Cover hiring western whores. Turns out that they're actually pretty good. I was honestly blown away with Mori's debut and so did the people on /jp/ that they actually were starting to dominate on the hololive thread. Some faggot janny deleted all mentions of Mori and the debut in the hololive thread, forcing the split which is now /hlgg/. That dreaded general is also the reason to why this board exists. As much of a shithouse the current vtubing community here on 4chan, at least I can say that I'm genuinely enjoying it.

It's been insane seeing all the new fags jumping in and trying to talk about how the threads should be like they had any idea what they actually were like. /vyt/ split arc, global split arc, the homo retaliation arc, all full of new fags forcing out the old thread culture and ruining it with their entry grade baby hot takes.

looking back at the current state of /vyt/ nowadays, it's just a wasteland of youtube link spams. I don't even know if there's still an actual community left in there. Most of the activity are on Hololive nowadays and I'm assuming that the /vyt/ schizos moved in there as well. I dread for the day that when EN2 comes, the newniggers will ask for a split again. Im already annoyed at the Takodachis and Deadbeats using their respective split threads. EN2 will definitely seal the fate and death of /hlgg/. I hope my doomposting ramblings won't turn into reality but I've already seen this fucking scenario play out multiple times already.

The separate threads ARE the generals, anon. Due to global size and broad amount of topics, its less of a general and more of an entire board in itself. If the thread was a lot slower, than yes it'd be a general. Anons splitting off and spending their times in their respective character generals is bad and the exact thing people feared would happen if /vt/ was made. It ruins the entire fun of talking about vtubers on a forum if everyone is just separated into their own little hugboxes.

Generals are cancer but one of the major problems with generals is that it segments that community away from each other. Which is what people spending most of their time in separate character threads does.

/vyt/ is fucking dead. None of the people here talk about Japanese chuubas on that thread. Thread activity only spikes during special events. Everyone just moved either to Nijisanji and Hololive or just stopped posting altogether. The curiosity and funposting /vyt/ had on its early days are gone. Now tell me if a thread whose only purpose is to archive a spam of youtube links is a thread with any semblance of community.

Hololive pre-Gen3 collabed with loads of people. Hell arguably even pre-Gen4 they collabed a lot more.
It's not even exaggeration to state that 99% of this thread don't know Aqua and Ririmu used to stream together. Worse, at least 90% probably don't even know who the latter is.
They've become horribly insulated since 2020 onwards, but Gen3 was definitely the start of the insular behaviour.
Now these days they have to write a fucking essay to request collabs with people because "Oh no icky males!!!"

This convo made me realize why I probably somewhat actually enjoy browsing this board while I haven't actually used the rest of the site for years. While the board itself has its own problems like say almost every poster is a schizo with some narrative they are trying to spout. These are apart of the board experience and add to the sense of "community" it has. Global is pretty much a board in itself and you can get a dozen different entire threads of discussion in it with a very wide range of anons. But outside that people don't really jam themselves into general threads, except westerntuber anons. Most of the general threads are just for image dumping and struggle to stay alive. The rest of the board is just various topics, normally rrats of some form. The thing is most of those threads end up being every type of anon on the board so threads end up being very same but also distinctly different in their own way. It's a very old 4chan style feeling from the board over being a neutered board where people try to separate from each other.

I doubt it'll last much longer, especially when en2 comes around. But until then /vt/ is probably the most fun I've had on this site in a long long time.

its becoming better in my opinion, every since the great trashfire in march, which increased usage of /wvt/ and the satelite threads. the /aud/ists have been uncaged and unleashed on /wvt/ as well and tsunderia might bleed a bit into prism and if the tiger&dragon narrative is true then tsunderia will probably get more /wvt/ traffic. dont see vshojo discussion merging any time soon, which might be for the better, and nijiEN will likely have their own general filled vs holo vs niji shitposting. depending on how unbearable that is and how much collabs they will do, chances are that /wvt/ will see some discussion. Doubt it since they would most likely collab with the bracket of 200-1000 viewer chuubas that are mostly converted channels with pre-existing fanbases which literally no one cares about on the entire site.

She's functionally the MySpace of vtubers. Basically tipped off a whole new category of media when she came out, yes... but got kind of outmoded fast by more optimized systems that put out much more content with way less effort, then multiplexed into groups of them to boot. Ai was just a different model from the start vs an adaptation of a typical variety streamer like what chuubas became known to be - actually with all the mocap and premade shows etc there was a lot more effort put into her than some girl talking into a phone. You can argue we regressed a lot from that. However when there are thousands of L2D streamers going vs just Ai I mean, is it even surprising at all she simply got drowned out in the wave of the trend?

Not to mention the way they attempted to force multiply her with there being several different Ais etc, just plain proved to be the wrong move instead of make Ai the founder of a chuuba group instead and be their Sora. Tragic? Kind of, but I mean she's still the #1 technically (for a more months at least) and still commands a lot of clout in Japan.

Was very close to falling into the Nijisanji hell because of kemt, but avoided that because parsing JP by ear fries my brain to this day. Was a reasonably dedicated pillbug. Life was most definitely sechigarai nojya. Accidentally saw Nora Cat publicly logging in to VRC for the first time, praying to statues in Japan Shrine, before everyone realized that he's online and the room became absolutely overcrowded.
And then Holo just appeared and consumed everything and unlike all of my acquaintances I was never too interested in them and gradually fell out of the trends to some multilingual indie swamps.

This is hyperbole to the highest degree. She isn't on top of the vtuber world anymore but Ai is doing just fine for herself. She gets decent viewership when she streams. Her videos still do ok (especially her songs), and, most importantly, her content is still really good.

That isn't even considering her Tik-Tok account which has actually blown up, has millions of subscribers, and gets millions of views. That is a part of the vtuber culture that has been mostly ignored here but she is absolutely killing it on that app.

What you guys are witnessing is more the fact that Hololive has an increased roster size that leads to more internal collabs than it is a willful downsizing of outside collaboration. Remember, there is some form collab rule in place that basically forces them to collab internally to promote lower traffic channels, and when your group gets above a certain size, keeping things fresh internally is easier than looking for people to collab.

>Now these days they have to write a fucking essay to request collabs with people because "Oh no icky males!!!"

I'm not actually very nostalgic for those days at all, I mostly remember them for proto-tribalfags like braindead Kizuna Ai loyalists and other people acting like they had god tier taste for watching Siro. The corporate vtubers were boring as fuck and there weren't nearly as many good japanese indies as there are active right now. Even early Nijisanji got a lot better through 2019.

The western fanbase grew to be a lot more moronic than I could have ever imagined but that's a given in any circumstance. You're awfully pessimistic if you look at them as a measure of the state of virtual youtubers as a whole.

There is no such rule, otherwise everyone and theor grandma would be forced to collab with fuckibg Choco, Aki and Mel, but yeah the main reason that there are less outside collabs is that hololive fucking tripled in size since 2018 and thus it's more likely that any holo will collab with another holo rather than outsiders, specially the new gens, people who used to collab with nijis still do it.

It just didn't stick as a format due to the setup and time needed to do 3D model live streams at the time, which is why live streaming didn't take off as a format until nijisanji came onto the scene with Live2D avatars and proof that the long-form live streaming format works for VTubers.

Let me offer my worthless perspective. I know that Ai's VA was not replaced and that all of the problems she's having are not her fault but rather the fault of her management. Nevertheless, I actively refuse to watch anything she does even if I hold Ai herself in high regard for both being the progenitor of modern Vtubing and for soldiering in the face of all that's happened to her. Why? It's to make sure that every other company understands and, more importantly, is MADE CONTINUALLY AWARE that they will pay the iron price if they try to replace their talent and that the audience will never forgive such a move. Companies fundamentally have a short memory. Anything that's not pertinent to the next quarterly report may as well have happened in the age of the Roman Empire. If Ai were to recover her crown, then you might unironically see the same shit that happened to her happen again to others because the suits see it as a sign that replacement is a risk that can be managed (rather than a certain harbinger of demise) and that upd8's mistake was merely in their approach to replacing Ai rather than the entire premise of the move. That's my rationale. It might sound retarded to the rest of you, but I honestly think that Ai continuing to die on the cross of irrelevance as a sacrifice to save the world of vtubing is a preferable outcome to the possibility of what happened to her and the Gamebu happen again. It is because the suits and management has seen and continues to see what is happening to her that they are always reminded that they are mortal and should not make the same mistake.

This is incredibly dumb. Gamebu already serves as an example to the industry on why replacement is a bad move. Ai, on the other hand, is a victim of rumors generated by the fan community getting out of control. There was never any intention on replacing her; it was the fact that the Multiple Ai project was happening at the same time as the Gamebu incident that caused the fans to assume the worst. If anything, Ai's situation should serve a reminder that the fans need to keep themselves in check lest their unfounded fears end up causing damage. Yeah, upd8 fucked up by not clarifying the situation sooner and on top of their bad management, they ended up getting shut down so they paid the price in that regards.
