Let's say you get someone like Woolie. Yeah, I'd watch that vtuber. The problem is that black people like Woolie are a 1/1000 occurrence originating from a series of extremely strange life circumstances. Someone like Woolie would never draw attention to his race. Most people who talk with him barely even know he's black until they actually meet him.

On the flipside, you could also get a Tariq Nasheed who would not be able to shut up about his race. It would be front and center of every single thing he does. Every game he plays, every stream he does, it would be the "Premier Black Experience" and would immediately filter a chunk of his audience.

Lots of black vtuber avatars look like a fucking mess. Majority of people seem to think that simply palette swapping the skin tone is good enough, but that simply isn't the case. Black anime characters need to be designed with the skin colour in mind, not as a side thought, since it deviates from the standard and greatly alters how colours pop out on them. It's not impossible for them to have good designs (see Nessa, Nagoriyuki, Miruko), but since it takes more effort, indies aren't taking that into account and are just slapping whatever on their avatars.

As is the problem with a majority of western vtubers, most black vtubers simply don't have a very interesting personality. Sometimes this also results in them just playing into the fact they are 'black', and falling onto stereotypes for cheap, low hanging laughs and clip baiting. 'Being black' isn't a real personality, and it turns people away who don't give a shit about that kind of stuff and just want to see you play games or be entertaining.

"Black" vtubers share a lot of the same problem as other western vtubers, in that a majority of them don't have any real talents, don't have a good design, aren't interesting or are just riding a trend instead of doing something they are passionate about. It has nothing to do with race, as much as some people want to pretend it is.

They can do well, and a 'black' vtuber can succeed, but only if the person behind it is able to overcome the common issues shared with a majority of western vtubers. Then, instead of being just a good 'black vtuber', they can be something actually more worth something, which is to be good 'western vtuber', cause fuck knows we don't have a lot of them.

An avatar that is supposed to be a black person from america would be odd because most avatars are just fantasy people from random made up places. Have you ever wondered why dark skinned characters tend to have white hair and clothes? Its to offset the skin tone. In a general sense you have to bend over backwards to have darker characters that look decent. On that note, this is also the reason anime characters are so light skinned. Its not because Japanese people don't know they have darker skin or that they prefer light skin, its just an aesthetic choice for cartoons.

There's no need to offset it like that. Brown skin and dark hair work wonderfully with subdued hot colors, and they wear gold/silver accents better than anyone else. You can also throw on a mishmash of colors that are enhanced by the dark skin, and make use of supporting dark colors without generating contrast.
