I don't run ads or accept donos or supas on my streams and I never have and I never will. I still spent ~$2500 on a great streaming PC, ~$500 on audio equipment and ~$100/month for great net because streaming is my hobby. Putting on the best show that I can for people makes me happy and so I don't mind spending a little bit on it.
These devs are probably the same way. You don't put the ungodly amount of time that these projects take in realistically expecting that you will ever get any kind of return on your investment. I assume that they want to make the best game that they can and have the most people get the most enjoyment out of it that they can. That appreciation and recognition is worth more to them than the value of the time, effort, and production costs associated with developing the game.
