Do you use a script to upload the files to the Mega? There might be a script to compress the images to a more space efficient format. If you do this all manually then the rest of this is probably not worth it.

I found that avif works best for my purposes. JpegXL is better at compression, but has recently lost support in chromium browsers and might not be suitable for long term storage.

First link is a lossy avif compressed file from a png that was originally about 3.6 mb, second link. That's about 80% savings in size using the avif.io encoder. I used the lossy and quality 100% settings.

Another thing to keep in mind if you decide to follow this is that any metadata will probably be lost. So you probably wouldn't want to compress embed pngs.

I have the perfect tool for it already too, and I almost uninstalled it since I ultimately didn't find it useful. Installed XnConvert a few days ago to try playing with lossless AVIF/HEIC/WebP on some beeg physical TIFF scans of album artwork that are eating up space - spoiler alert - all 3 of them suck donkey balls, a level 9 PNG with the fancy filters is still smaller and compresses in several orders of magnitude less time...I'm looking at you, AVIF. Microsoft's dead-end JPEG XR format was the only one that actually fared any better.

Gonna see if MEGA's gallery supports any other file formats while I'm at it, else I'll probably convert everything en masse to 75% JPG.

Update, MEGA will preview/thumbnail the following formats: JPEG 2000, WebP
JPEG XL, JPEG XR, HEIC, AVIF all failed to preview. I tested AVIF and HEIC multiple times, both lossy and lossless, since they displayed "image icons" in MEGA, but they still didn't display as images. Should also add that I'm using Microsoft Edge on Windows with the appropriate AVIF/HEIC Store "extensions" installed and can view them directly using "Photos", so if it were to work in any browser, it would've worked here.

That leaves only JPEG 2000 and WebP as lossless options, and as options other than JPEG at all really. Lossless JPEG 2000 is completely useless. Lossless WebP would only free up ~5 GB, best case scenario. I used the 12 images in the "34548551" folder as a test.

I assume you mean the extension from the Microsoft Store. I also have that extension installed, but I'm not sure if it's being updated. Some of my AVIF files aren't being displayed correctly. Brave and Firefox both display them correctly. Might just be an issue with my Windows.

Checked out the Mega on Firefox browser. Folders 2 (xn convert default lossless) and 5 (webp 80) showed thumbnails for me.

The rest of the webp folders only load in the first two thumbnails. For me those two are Kronii and Lamy.

I know you said no avif, but I still checked that out. For anyone curious avif didn't show any thumbnails.

Impressive space gains and understandably there is a loss of smaller details and some artifacting in the jpegs. Maybe, one day there will be ai to upscale and remove artifacting.

Thank you for the feedback! I did check in FF myself as well after anon you? said it didn't work in Edge, AVIF didn't show up there either. I was not expecting HEIC to work at all given Mozilla's stance on HEVC as a whole. 2 & 5 show all of the thumbnails because I clicked through them all, and the other ones show Kronii/Lamy because I searched the filename, minus extension, and just clicked through each image, kek.
