at this point (since around 2018 actually) the term "vtuber" is nothing but a pretentious term for "streamer" (like calling server a "cloud")
current "vtubers" have more in common with normal streamers like northernlion or lilypichu than with Kizuna Ai
no, hiding your IRL face is not unique to vtubers, it was the default early on in streaming and internet in general, same for using avatars, and no, Luna or whatever other meme pick you have is not "playing a character/keyfabe" any more than anyone else doing their job

Don't care. I watched Ai and Nekomiya Hinata back then too and I'm glad that era is gone.

Vtubers have and always will be their peak in recorded video, not livestreams.

Vtuber now are just a pale comparative to the golden era vtubers, EOP faggots will never understand this, because they got feed with the inferior product that is called holoEN.

The first Vtuber like Kizuna Ai or the four heavenly kings, even Eilene were trailblazers, people so unique and creative, that they could stand alone and still create a sub culture that stand to this day.

Then Nijisanji appeared which added the streamer part to vtuber that still is strongly associated with vtubers, after nijisanji appeared .Live that added the Idol part to the vtuber streamer concept, that was the silver age, when hololive was still in diapers.

.Live had problems because of some greedy streamers and internal problems, that's when hololive gained momentum, they just captured the audience of .Live but they added the part to pander to foreign audiences, because at the time the local market was dominated by Nijisanji.

Hololive peaked at gen 4, and that was the copper age, when they started to do cabaret fanservice and reading superchats, but because they got so popular, they engraved the idea that a vtuber = streamer + idol + cabaret/host actitude.

Now we have a fucking chimera know as "vtubers" that aren't different from twitch whores, because they distorted the concept of vtubers to adapt to the english audience, all this was the work of hololive.

Now the person behind the avatar, is the same as the vtuber.

Vtuber=streamer, to the point that they aren't different from the regular streamer

I can tell how new you are by how little you know about that era.
And yeah, EOP zoomers can't understand the Nippon Glory of Kizuna Ai singing Hej Monica and pandering to try to get a Collab with PewDiePie

>t. never EVER watched luna

So then is being a vtuber according to you "having a studio write scripts for you to act out in prerendered bits"? That's a fucking cartoon rebranded as something else. Kizuna being episodes that get released where she statically talks to a non-live audience and pretends she's interacting with you, is still a cartoon. Live2D didn't catch on instantly, but when it did and as it's improved (it used to look totally lmao at first and looks closer and closer to fluid today), it made what Kizuna was merely pretending to be doing, aping doing, an actual reality. That's why she got left in the dust - her format became fucking obsolete.

It's not her fault or anyone's really, tech caught up and as it turned out people liked being able to actually-talk to the anime girl in real time over a pretend routine. Wow what a surprise. Kizuna did livestreams too, it just wasn't as frequent, she wasn't trying to be stuck in the past but couldn't really move on into the future either.

You like to act smart, but the actual predecessor of Vtubing is Hatsune Miku. People looked at her and thought, "What if an actual person could perform while looking like that?" And then afterwards you have Kizuna Ai and the rest.

The real issue is youtube. Ad revenue is super cucked, and your video can be demonetized by any random reason. Considering how many hours it takes to make a vid compared to instantly getting money from streaming, it's no wonder videos died.

I like this post, it puts in perspective why some many anons try so hard to differentiate vtubers from avatar streamers for me.
Somebody applying this logic to say, Selen, is still wrong, but I see why would they think they aren't.

probably because in the golden age of vtubing people were trying out new shit? It couldn't stay as a 3d/2d model only when people were experimenting with their VR headset and even going as far as creating a videogame with character creation as an avatar for content. You would've known this if you weren't such a post 2020 vtuber tourist

OP does have a point. Call them whatever you want, but VTubers gave us some kinds of content that actually feel unique to them, and Selen definitely isn't that.

I don't hate her, I just don't think she's very interesting.
The latest solo stream of hers I watched was the Blender stream, which was something different from her usual content for once. But as far as this thread is concerned, it's not really any different, that stream would have been pretty much the same with or without a VTuber avatar.
