Gyaru is more of a fashion subculture than it is a social group. It's not even strange if someone is a gyaru and an otaku. Not in a "otaku friendly gyaru" way like in manga, solitude is a seed for both subcultures so it really just means that she dipped into both when she was going through puberty.
