An esports team getting a vtuber for their team lets them work with different types of sponsors that they normally can't work with. so normally a 3DPD for C9 like sneaky can only get certain types of sponsors like your typical gamer stuff like Nvidia, AMD, Intel, Logitech as well as more generic brands like Macdonald's, coke, redbull, statefarm. But lets say that C9 gets a dog Vtuber and they end up getting a bit of an audience of pet owners, well then C9 could then approach brands specifically on behalf of this specific vtuber and try to work on a deal where they sell adspace just on their stream or maybe they do a sponsored stream entirely on whatever the product is. That's a specific niche, a more generic sponsor for vtubers would be anything anime related like streaming sites or anything that sells merchandise for anime and videogames might want to approach them.

The jp esport scene is actually pretty small compare to na/eu esport scene (i say the jp vtuber market is normalized and actually larger than the jp esport scene hence the higher numbers). Vtuber concept is still pretty niche overseas and i doubt an overseas vtuber tournament would reach the success like the csgo finals with 551k viewers. Normal esports viewers are used to facecam players and i doubt they watch vtubers. Of course, there is no harm to appeal to a different crowd for c9.

By league competetive ruleset, esports players must show their face and can't even hide it behind the glasses or like that during even introduction.
Streamers though another matter and are handled outside of Riot jurisdiction. So they can do for example interview(webcam esports player+live2d rig streamer) without being on IRL place.

In that case, because it's new flavor of the month, and they can bring new audience(2d coomers) by doing things like that.
In general sense, vtubing is more like going to your alter-ego avatar, so anyone who has own image can be one. It is not necessary to be an anime avatar+VA combo, you can do similar things with many other combinations.
Though i'm not watching popular chubas and just lurking this board for more meta knowledge in chuba community, as it can save life.

Tekken is also more fundamentally different than most anime fighters too.
