it does have one of the best stories in modern ff games, but its slow as fuck and it has its ups and downs storywise, when it hits its peak its a massive mountaintop but its low are like slugging through the swamp, there are good bits in the first 60 hours of the game, but most people consider heavensward, shadbowbringers and endwalker like the prime examples but even then its not the majority of the expacs that are good, its usually the finales or smaller moments before that.

I just do not get the appeal. I can't take people's word when they say the story in FFXIV is great because I feel like the sub fee and time commitment inherent to playing the game color those opinions. It sounds like several JRPGs' worth of time for one JRPG's worth of story to me.
When I played it myself I found the story to be entirely forgettable, but the gameplay was dead simple and addictive enough to keep me playing for a while. I won't argue that game doesn't have really nice art design and great music, though. If I was motivated to make friends in the game I probably would have enjoyed it more.
