I blame SAO for every isekai having RPG mechanics. I all but universally loathe that trend. RPG mechanics are simplifications designed to domesticate the world for game devs, making a world constrained by them when it doesn't need to be is so fucking dumb, and enables a lot of the really stupid "one weird tricks that make no actual sense" premises of the genre.

It's also a super lazy setup most of the time. You don't need to "create" a character in a foreign setting. People have friends, love interests, past experiences . All of it gets thrown out because it's a fucking new world and you get to start from scratch. There are good inversions or plays on that but for the most part, it's just extremely lazy way to throw a character into a world without bothering and also give them some kind of unique super special ability because they got isekaid here - which would also take effort to justify if the character was always a part of this world.

It also failed to grasp anyone simply because it oversaturated it's own market with content before it was able to grow into something. The series has light novels, manga, video games etc. and that was before such media had largely moved to the internet, getting -into- .hack// took at lot of effort. The games themselves has one of the best representation of what mmos at the time were like and probably the best representation of what people getting stuck in a video game would actually react like, panic and despair.

Also this, .hack//Sign has a massive issue in pacing, as the story comes to a crawling halt, there's a lot of time where the characters just talk to one another. It's interesting if you are fascinated by what the inner workings and motivations of the characters are, but that in turn can also be incredibly tedius.
Give it a shot if you think it could be interesting, but expect a very slow moving story.
