Not saying that japanese is harder as a whole, but japanese kanji have two issues that hanzi (Chinese) don't have. The most important are the (in)famous multiple readings of kanji, even if we are talking about the usual ones, there's uncommon readings but also exceptions which don't follow any established rule. This one is less important but yet there it is, the chinks simplified their own hanzi decades ago, for example in japanese 電(electricity) is supposed to be one of the most basic kanji, like one of the first hundred you learn. Compare it to its Chinese equivalent "电". However, arguably japanese it's still easier just only because of its pronunciation, they are line night and day in that regard
