Left also looks bad since without any contour on the upper/inner sides it just looks like saggy manboobs. You can get away with the left but you'd have to add shading to create that upper/inner contour.

I distinctly remember trying to fix something very early when I started doing reps. I must’ve redrawn it like 100 times. Always sucked. Much later I realized it was actually the torso not the leg that was fucked. It was rotated just a bit more than I thought but just enough that the reference didn’t work anymore. In fact the more perfectly I drew the leg the more I hated it. A vaguely leg shaped blob my brain could accept but once it was well defined the mismatch became more and more uncomfortable. This happened to me a lot: I knew it sucked but I wasn’t exactly sure why. Devoted a few weeks to the basics and collecting some good anatomy references and now it’s pretty rare. I still suck but now it’s usually obvious why. I wish I had done it sooner I feel like I wasted a lot of reps without understanding what my goal even was other than “draw better”

Generally with manga-style greyscale you wouldn't do the amount or depth of shading you're doing. If you look at the original reference there's really only 4 colors: pure white, pure black, a light midtone (the shading on her clothes and face), and a dark midtone (her hair, some darker shadows). And even that's relatively detailed, a lot of the time mangaka stick to only one midtone or no midtones at all (i.e. only black and white with no greys). Blonde hair like Polka has would usually be rendered as pure white and you would rely on the black outline and maybe some light shadows to avoid it blending into the skin.

To a beginner that probably seems intimidating as hell heh. Starting with boxes for the ribcage and pelvis, cylinders for the limb sections, and just balls for joints and the waist is probably more their speed. I’m betting a newb just doesn’t know what most of those lines represent. The shoulder and groin/hip especially are hard to break down unless you learn some anatomy. The junction of the rectus, oblique fascia, oblique, and pelvis gave me fits for a long time because it can look drastically different from person to person or even the same person depending on their pose. The difference between inguinal ligament and fold, and gap between the crest and Asis threw me for a loop for a while too.

Krita is very, very good and especially for a beginner more than adequate. It's ecosystem isn't quite as big so there aren't quite as many brushes/assets available, the community is smaller, and it has some of that open source jank here and there but if you are just getting started it's a fantastic option. It's layout and UI is actually very similar to PS.

No. There are professionals who use Krita for production. The things it lacks are fairly minor and/or specialized for the most part. Then again CSP is not that expensive if you are drawing as a serious hobby, especially compared to the cost of a drawing tablet, and it probably has the most resources in general if you are planning that far ahead.

What are you drawing on that you need a VM to run CSP? A Linux PC? There's a lot of debate but an old Surface/iPad/Tab I can carry around very easily and doodle/sketch when I have some downtime and I've grown to love it, and it's not expensive at all, especially compared to almost any other hobby I've ever had

I think it depends on what your goals are, what your stage of development is, and how much you want to invest. Once I decided to do serious reps I found an old tablet and bought a new stylus and used Kirta, which was a total of like 40 bucks. Older drawing tablets can be had for like 200-300 bucks. It was worth it for me because I really, really preferred display tablets and I really wanted to be able to just carry it around and sketch whenever I had time but those are both personal preferences.

If you do most of your drawing on your PC just use Krita and a decent tablet/stylus for like 3 months and at that point you'll probably have a better idea of what you want. Do you feel comfortable vs you feel like you are struggling due to your equipment/software. A set of fine pens and a pocket sketchbook is dirt cheap and a good way to kill time waiting in line, etc IMO.

ever since ive started properly doing anatomy reps the past week or so i can feel the improvement especially on the torso, however i now feel like i make the hips too small when the character is at an angle. i also still dont really understand how the ribcage works

So I'm struggling with this exact issue. I think your shoulders are wider than your hips, but the torso contour lacks a little definition, particularly in the hip, thigh junction. Ribs are really weird since half don't even attach to the sternum but instead to the costal cartilages which extend way further down that people realize at first. Once I drew those in and kept in mind there's not much space between the "bottom corner" of the ribs and the iliac crest, my torsos started making more sense. Shitty sketch with an anatomy reference from Manga Materials attached. I love their common mistakes series
