you know, there's probably an interesting discussion to be had about what exactly constitutes a vtuber and whether vtubers existed before the term was originally coined.
for example the term sandwich took it's name from the earl of sandwich however the concept of 'bread and meat' or ;bread and cheese' existed long before then

I'd argue loquenderos are an earlier example
>What's a loquendero?
Users of the voice synthesis program Loquendo, they span a wide variety of genres, and not all could really considered vtubing (Loquendo GTA San Andreas for example), but a few come close
>Loquendo city
Series that mostly focus on roleplaying a narrative including multiple cartoon, videogame and anime characters
Example: https://youtu.be/2yFqCw4bAVQ
>Reviews
Self explanatory, reviews, typically also roleplaying as a character, sometimes original, often from an existing IP, reviews are often less about actually reviewing and more about shit flinging, often called destrictive critiques
Example: https://youtu.be/HEHTop_5fxo
>Let's play
Not that common, but they exist, your run of the mill YouTube let's play, but with Loquendo
Example: https://youtu.be/ifu6k3KiDSU
It has fallen out of popularity in recent years but still sees some use

Except vtubers are playing a character. I'll take it the Minecraft youtubers were just self-inserting into the game or something.
Then there's also the fact that actual vtubers play with the model of the very character they're playing on screen while many Minecraft players would do it with face cams instead, which would "break the illusion" that we're watching an actual Minecraft character streaming that is assuming anyone even had such a retarded illusion to begin with.
If we were to start following retarded takes like this one then we could argue that whoever uploaded the very first Sims playthrough is the very first vtuber, or that whoever uploaded the very first playthrough with any game with a character creator is.

1. Needs to be animated original virtual character with some degree of motion capture
2. Must be a recurring in its own content programme ie cant be only part of an ensemble

everyone knows that the first vtuber is the orange dude, but either way
the first vtuber is kizuna AI simply because they invented the "vtuber" name and basically defining what a typical vtuber is, eg. an anime girl drawing with motion capabilites that creates some kind of content. But if you take the concept of a "an inanimate character that is animated by a person in order to make some kind of content" then the oldest form you can find of it is puppeteery like this anon said >>24851235
but these characters are not virtual or in a videosharing platform, so if a vtuber is just a virtual character played by an actor then the first virtual character played by someone on the internet then that is the first vtuber, vocaloids would be vtubers too

For me, it's someone with a virtual avatar. Could be anything to represent themselves, but game characters doesn't count. The character could be someone with a humanoid avatar or some carpet rug that can talk. This avatar must be used in a video, shared through video-sharing platforms.

>whether vtubers existed before the term was originally coined.
We should start from there, but I wouldn't say Kizuner was the first vtuber even though she coined the term. I'd say anyone who came before Ai can be considered a vtuber, but only if they kept on doing it after the term was coined. Everything beyond that is a protovtuber.

How many times do we need to have this thread when the answer has been discovered already. It's Waldo from the Jim Henson company. Meets all the requirements for a vtuber while all the meme pics are missing something or came later.
