That's crazy expensive, considering what I saw from Sana's stream was a bit lacking as compared to Return to Dreamland (from watching Sana's stream too)
Never really had the chance to play that much console games as is typical for lower middle class SEAfags who can only afford to play games on internet cafes
And now I can't be bothered to emulate because I'm not so much impressed with the gameplay anymore, but the low poly models do have a certain charm to it
It's part of the reason why I love watching Sana, I guess. For showing me a nintendo-flavored piece of childhood I never experienced, my Switch got a bit of love thanks to her, and for those games I can't be bothered to play I'd just watch her playthroughs

Ever is a huge exaggeration, but it was weird to me she didn't seem to recognize Ricky and co. She seems to really only be well versed in the GBA and DS era games, which isn't that many in comparison.

I haven't played 64 since I was a kid, but the most fun part was discovering all the ability combinations. After that, it was probably the mini games, but you need other people to really enjoy those. I can't speak to the level design or whatever, but they got the copy ability part right. For me, the only game that compares is the newest one in that regard.

A lot of people didn't recognize Rick even when those games were recent. I wouldn't be surprised if most people's first exposure to those characters were Smash trophies.
Heck, even Kirby himself was kind of obscure until Superstar. When that came out, I was the only person I knew that had played Kirby, and I started with the NES game since I didn't own a Gameboy for a long time.

I just think it's interesting that people's ideas of what Sana "should" know as a Kirby fan seem waaay more advanced than what most people knew about the character for like half the series existence. In fact, her knowing as much as she does despite playing "only" a handful of the games just marks how much the series has progressed by this point.

It's kinda like how now you can meet a random 5-year old Star Wars fan that knows what a Mandalorian is and can name all of the bounty hunters in Empire, info that used to be exclusive to comics and trading cards that nerds used to beat their chests on.

Kirby 64 was a clusterfuck in its development. There were tons of cut content left on the cutting room floor because HAL had absolutely no idea how to make Kirby 3D. HAL was barely able to get Kirby 64 out of the door. And sadly nothing HAL learned from Kirby 64 was useful because HAL had 3 cancelled Gamecube games. Its mostly the 2.5D level design that made Kirby 64 suffer. As HAL spent way too much time getting the levels to work with the camera as opposed to making good levels. There's a reason 2.5D levels were dropped for Return to Dreamland.

I let my PS2 replace my PS1, even though I still have my PS1 somewhere. it got to the point where I was having to keep the thing on its side to load most games.

I honestly do prefer the OG controller without the analog sticks though. took me a long time to warm up to those because I just loved how the PS controller felt like an upgraded SNES controller while the dualshock version felt noticeably chunkier.

I will continue to dream of Sana.

Most definitely not. Plenty of Nintendo fans at my elementary school. One friend who actually had a Gameboy let me borrow it a couple times times so I could play Metroid 2 (I had no idea what I was doing in it at the time). None of these kids played Kirby when it was out, because I was reeeeally hoping one of them would have it so I could try it. When the NES version finally came out I was the guy telling my friends how great it was. Most of us were already Megaman fans so I was selling them especially on the power stealing.

Years later I finally got a Gameboy at a garage sale that had Kirby and a bunch of other games in a carrying case. Playing it really made me appreciate how much of a step up the NES version was, so I was kinda glad I started with that one.

The thing that made Superstar so broadly appealing though was the co-op, coupled with the general hype of the SNES era. It was definitely one of the best 2P experiences on the console, especially for platformers. There actually weren't that many platformers at the time that let you do simultaneous co-op, Sonic and Contra were like the two most prominent ones and otherwise usually people were playing beat em ups or shmups for that.

It's not like we were in a vacuum, it's a major Metropolitan area, about the best variety you could get pre-internet. Plenty of kids had Nintendo Power and Gamepro subscriptions and lots of free time, and most of the districts collected around the same rental stores or Toys R Us locations anyway. Still, when you compared big releases like Mario 3, DKC, or Sonic 2 to Kirby it was like night and day.
