What is /asp/?

A thread for aspiring vtubers! Whether your goal is to make the journey as an independent streamer or to gain experience and build a portfolio for agency auditions. Let's help each other grow and make it. Indies are welcome to selfpost, but shill responsibly. Share your knowledge, insights, feedback, discuss what has worked and what hasn't worked for you. And always remember to do your research before posting personally identifying information. That includes both in this thread and in your audition applications to agencies.

The general rule of thumb is Twitch if your content is primarily based on livestreaming and YouTube if your content is primarily pre-recorded and edited.

>Do you think there's an audience for X, Y, Z content?
First, ask yourself if you would watch a streamer of your skill and experience. Second, do a check on social media and look to see if other streamers are already creating similar content. Don't limit yourself to vtubers, include traditional real life streamers to scope out a potential audience.

Is there actually any point to doing a debut as an indie or waiting until you have a certain amount of followers to start streaming? I'm just going to start streaming when I get my finished model, but my friends keep telling me that's such a bad idea. I won't have viewers anyway, surely just starting is the better and more entertaining option?

You can still get a handful of viewers as a PNG.
And really, your friends are basically telling you that they will at least watch you before your model is finished. That's at least two viewers right there!
Assuming you have no prior experience in streaming or content creation, you lose nothing by either streaming without a cam or PNG at all right now or with a PNG.
As for debuts? Save that for when you already have a following. I realize that sounds counterintuitive to the actual meaning of the word debut, but you should really save the "here's who I am and what I like" just chatting stream for when you know for certain that people will tune in.

Debuts only work if you spends weeks/months hyping them up and are genuinely good at networking and community building, invested in a bunch of art, made tons of pre-debut content etc. It's really not for everyone. Your friends are dumb and if you ask them for examples of debuts they've seen do wellthey'll likely just send you to aforementioned type of person (Cimrai, CJBosu,and others) not realizing Vtubers debut to no one literally every single day.

take a stroll through twitter and search for vtuber debuts ("Vtuber debut thanks" "vtuber debut coming" are some good search terms) and look up how well their debuts did and how well they did a week later.

A friend of mine debuted as her first stream, and I stayed up to watch her stream, because she's SEA time, so doesn't always match me. She had a bunch of assets on her stream, plans for her emotes, sub badges, and so on... I was still working through affiliate, and realized I had none of that.
So I sorted it.
I reached out to artists, friends, and fiverr, got my emotes. made my own sub badges. bought some premade overlays.
started saving for a proper mic.

Money can help overcome talent... But talent is almost as good. I don't want to name names, but there's a recent aspie who's fucking killing it. Incredible figures. And yet their stuff is nearly all pre-made.

She keeps talking near constantly, and stays on track. I've watched a lot of the new gen of aspies, and they can be entertaining, but they also leave large chunks of deadair. Further, she also sticks to a topic, or segues when chat does, rather than just randomly bouncing from topic to topic.
Deadair can be fine, if you're playing a dialogue heavy game, but when you're playing Minecraft, it's not. Similarly, I know fighting games require attention, so we can't expect you to pay attention to chat, but long silences aren't ideal.

Going on from that, she stays talking with chat, and bouncing things off them. The tenderizer, onions sauce, eating electronics/rocks, etc... These are all because she does exceedingly well at interacting with chat.

Final point, she's willing to go off script, and go find the photos or whatever she's talking about to share with the stream, not just talking about it.

I'm actually learning about what I can do to improve through watching her.

I have been trying to resume vtubing for over 6 months now. I stopped because I was really depressed, when i was feeling better and was ready to return i started to have problems with my internet or random power cuts. Actual gameplay started ~19 minutes in had a zatsu to start because I had to delay the stream once and didn’t want to delay it again. I’m pretty sure I’m getting no better at my loudness and energy reps, but living in effectively an in-law suite playing at 9:30pm–1am doesn’t help.
My only framerate bottleneck now is more or less my internet I think, at least for console games.

2 - Why the fuck do a slide wipe when the BG is the same? It's weird. Either fade in/out the sources, or just cut.
3 - You do 10 seconds of wiggling before saying "hey", then "test test", "yeah", "nyom nyom nyom". You get 40 seconds of you on screen before saying anything of substance
I understand wanting to do a sound check, but consider doing it as part of your intro, rather than it's own thing.
4 - Title. Why the fuck do you include the game at the start of the title? You get 36 characters, and if your stream title starts with [Splatoon 2] in the Splatoon 2 category, you're losing those characters.
5 - Stop with the 'Soooo...', 'And...', and 'Uhhhh...' if possible. Try to cut out filler words. It'll make you talk slower, but it cuts out the drone that everyone has with voice.
6 - 10m mark "So how's everyone tonight? Wow, I keep on twisting my tongue here. How's all your day? Saturday or Sunday, I guess in some places"... silence for 25 seconds, then "mhmmmmm"

I've been stagnating in 15~ CCV for the past few months. It's usually the same regulars and maybe 1-3 randoms. I love the small community I have but at this point is basically me streaming to my peers since I've known them for a while now and most of them are other chuubas. I don't really want to hop on trends or play popular games that I won't enjoy just for the sake of growth since most of that will result in people leaving when they see my content doesn't revolve around that. Looking for some thoughts and/or advice here because at the moment, I'm at a crossroads with what I want to do.
My current situation is that I have already created just about every asset required to start streaming. I have a self-drawn model that's currently being rigged, I have a very minimalistic game overlay that is essentially just a chat textbox, I made a just chatting screen, I have screens, I have Twitch panels, I'm pretty much ready to go besides a few things that I could create down the line.
My only problem is; I'm still a PNG, and my mic is shit. I've done test streams and a few friends have said I'm very good at carrying conversations despite only having 2-3 viewers. I'm quite confident in my voice, even if my tone of voice makes me come off as a depresso. Should I keep streaming until I can get better equipment and my rig, or just be patient? I'm in no rush, since I see VTubing as a mere creative outlet, and can merely continue with my other ventures in the meantime. Thoughts would be appreciated, thank you.
