It's very hard to tell what people don't know and what they are nervous about. I knew way more Japanese than you need for basic shit but the second I was forced into a situation where people couldn't speak English when I was in Japan, I freaked the fuck out and forgot it all. So it's very clear Lui is talking to Fauna like she's a child, she even has lots of the stuff written down and translated and still says it in English even though the premise is she won't do that. But it's impossible to tell if Fauna is understanding that or not, like when Lui suddenly goes off-script, Fauna could very well be grasping nothing for all we know and just laughing nervously.

Actually speaking a language that you don't use daily is difficult and overwhelming.
I was self taught and could translate japanese but had no practice or daily use for it. I only communicate usually with chats only. When I came to japan and they talked to me I actually froze and blanked out.

I think you can definitely pick up the meaning of words and stuff from years of watching anime based on context clues, but knowing what words mean and being able to properly put them into into a sentence in your head and the speak it is another thing in general.

I'd say that's probably the primary reason weebs who take JP courses end up flunking out more often than not apart from the kanji filtering, especially when it comes to how different the sentence structure is when you're coming from a romance language.

"I like this dog because it is cute" in English turns into "Because it's cute, I like this dog" in Japanese. It doesn't look like a big change on paper but when you have to approach every sentence like that it adds up over time.

Because this type of stream is a Holo-type of stream, we've seen it in many languages. English, Japanese, Indonesian, German, Korean. Maybe even some others. To be this type of stream, it can't be a stream where the two people are capable of speaking only in the target language the entire stream together. So to keep that element of it being a language someone is learning, she would have to dumb it down. Otherwise it becomes a Japanese cultural sharing stream, not a language stream.
