What is /asp/?

A thread for aspiring vtubers! Whether your goal is to make the journey as an independent streamer or to gain experience and build a portfolio for agency auditions. Let's help each other grow and make it. Indies are welcome to selfpost, but shill responsibly. Share your knowledge, insights, feedback, discuss what has worked and what hasn't worked for you. And always remember to do your research before posting personally identifying information. That includes both in this thread and in your audition applications to agencies.

FAQ:
>Do I need a fully rigged model to be a vtuber?
Nope! You can get started as a simple .png character!

>I want to learn how to rig Live2D models, where do I go?
Brian Tsui (of Iron Vertex), Kira Omori and the official Live2D YouTube channels have many tutorials available.

>Where can I find artists/riggers?
vtuber.gg, ArtStation, DeviantArt, Twitter, Reddit, Skeb.jp, etc.

>I just want to get started, can I buy pre-made models?
Yes! Live2D models can be purchased off nizima.com (Live2D's official marketplace) or booth.pm (general Japanese indie artist website). Be sure to check compatibility with your facial tracking software!

>Where can I learn how to digital market myself?
https://learndigital.withgoogle.com/digitalgarage

>Where can I find some good games to stream?
https://twitchtracker.com/games
https://sullygnome.com/

>Twitch or YouTube?
The general rule of thumb is Twitch if your content is primarily based on livestreaming and YouTube if your content is primarily pre-recorded and edited.

>Do you think there's an audience for X, Y, Z content?
First, ask yourself if you would watch a streamer of your skill and experience. Second, do a check on social media and look to see if other streamers are already creating similar content. Don't limit yourself to vtubers, include traditional real life streamers to scope out a potential audience.

would it be bad etiquette to get your model rigged by a cheap rigger and then later on get the same model re-rigged by a more expensive but higher quality rigger? haven't heard of anyone doing that but i would like to, i can commission and afford the model artist that i want right now but can't afford the rigger i want

Looking for feedback on the basics of my plan to start vtubing. I have zero experience with streaming, FYI. My goals are to be entertaining while having a fun and challenging hobby. Ideally I'd feel like I was making progress as I went, and if I eventually made a little pocket money, that wouldn't be bad either (though realistically, I'm going to sink in WAY more money than I get out of it).

Current phase:
- Commission a PNG avatar with a couple expressions to work with (will probably take another month with my commission in the waitlist)
- Also in the process of buying a much better computer for streaming/gaming/video editing.
- Learning about OBS and the technical aspects of streaming in general. (I've worked with OBS a little at work and I do video editing as part of my job, but streaming is far more technical with OBS than anything I've done before.)
- Doing singing lessons and vocal training.

Next phase:
- Start streaming, focus on developing personal style, niche, social media, more graphics, etc.
- Start commissioning Live2D model + rigging ($2500 budget in mind so far)
- Stay in this phase for 3-6 months (likely by necessity, the waitlists for the designers/riggers I'd want are long)

Assuming that I'm still having a good time and I'm happy with whatever kind of viewership I've developed, then I would debut. Alternatively, if I'm finding that I'm spinning my wheels, not having fun, or simply not developing any kind of viewership at all, than I'll cut my losses with the 2D model and end things prior to debut.

There are a million more little details involved, just wanted to see if the framework for my plans looks relatively sound. What do you guys think?

learning OBS takes an hour. don't mess with settings. default will be better for 99.99% of chuubas unless there is a very specific thing you're looking for. start doing your reps now even without a png.

Even if you can afford it, dont get Iron vertex. They've increased their prices are mostly cater to companies now. Also they charge insane prices if you ever want to get new outfits too. They've pretty much setup their system to benefit themselves and their top customers while leaving everyone else at the bottom.

Just find someone quality elsewhere.

A pc with enough heft to stream and play games, commission a medium-tier artist and rigger, and as other anons said, put the bulk of it to surviving.
Most of the struggle with the vtubing career is it can't be a "career" without the time investment, and you can't do the time investment if you're working to keep a roof over your head.
Luckily my job is wfh and hands-off enough that I can do editing and twitter, but a lot of people aren't so lucky.

23207207

I'm done with my art stream for today, i made this new schedule because i realized the old one has nothing to do with RPG / fantasy design. I feel like this is a lot fukken worse and I'm ready to go full menhera on this and delete it all but maybe some of you can help and make me see the light at the end of the tunnel.

Here's a couple notes regarding the design:
- quest board text needs an ornamented sign
- different parchment sizes / shapes to be more dynamic needed
- switch the background for a mix of wood / and have a cork style surface (might hurt the contrast)
- make proper "no stream" posters like "guild closed" or "resting at the inn"
- the exp bar / gold rewards would matter because i can put those in my game and use it to tackle new bosses and if i fail to defeat them (only get one try as i play live) id have to do more streaming reps to get exp and level up my character (model).

I think I'm overdoing it and it's getting to the point where it's way too cringe and i should just get the model done and be a regular chuuba like everyone else but i don't know. Feeling a little uneasy today, even if i had fun on stream.

I feel like skeumorphic designs like this are a lot of work. I tried looking up existing ones and... it's genuinely hard, bro, so don't feel down about it. Not all of the examples in picrel are great, but they've all got something decent about them.

I think part of the problem is slightly conceptual. A board like this is visually conflicting, with every piece trying to attract attention in its own way because of its myriad contributors. There are things that draw the eye, but it's not organized, unlike a schedule. Most of my examples have some physical overlap, and the most bland example (bottom left) uses the same layout for each post.

It's not to say your concept can't be done, but that may be unknowingly contributing to your frustrations. As you said, varying the sizes/shapes of the posts will likely help.

It's ok, just roll with it. For most viewers having you fumble around with stuff and failing is more "entertainment" than just having things work as long as you don't nuke your stream entirely. And even then it's not the end of the world. I can understand that it's not enjoyable for yourself. I hate messing with audio and being told something is bad or even worse has been bad for like 30 minutes. Especially annoying as a 2view where nobody really chats.

Honestly, I actually really enjoy smaller streams if the person interacts with chat. With bigger streams, as a chatter, I just sorta become part of the wave and it's not particularly entertaining anymore.

For me at least, the appeal of a streamer is chat interaction at the lower levels. Once you go beyond 10 (arbitrary number, don't put weight on it) active chatters, to me, there's no real value to the stream vs just watching the vod.

That's of course just me, as a 2view enjoyer. I don't ever want to discourage people from trying to grow though.

I’m just friend #204 now or whatever and we don’t even talk anymore despite me trying. Aw man, that really doesn't sound fun. If you hadn't already called them an ex-friend I would really suggest that you bring this up with them. I don't really think it would be unreasonable of you to ask that they mention you by name if the two of you truly were in this together pre-debut. I can't imagine that a real friend would have any problems namedropping you in passing.
In any case, you really do have my sympathies.

Think about what motivated you to become a vtuber in the first place. You need to do a little introspection and see whether or not you're truly driving your own car or not right now, so to speak. You can't sit in the passenger seat of your own life. If you don't want to be a vtuber that's perfectly okay, but you need to be honest with yourself. You have to have enough faith in yourself to succeed by your own merits if this is truly something you want for yourself and not something that you were just made to go along with.

Sounds quite rough and emotionally distressing, but it's an opportunity to re-think the character and perhaps think of a new thing/story to experience instead. Maybe have some time to make peace with the loss, but try to convert the negative energies into something positive. As in think about how even if the project won't happen you still have assets to make/re-purpose for something else. I'm gonna let you in on a little secret my man, you've gotta have two things: Charisma and Audacity.
You've also got to understand what kind of audience you're showing up to and how you can influence them with your contentz.
If you can't figure out what kind of audience you're trying to entertain and how you'll be breaking into the market -- then it's over for you, ya dig..?

>Charisma
Gotta be out there and be able to make lasting impressions within the first few minutes -- no, seconds of them watching your stream.

Some sort of memorability attached to your character.
Try playing into your surface-level gimmicks first. You need to make yourself memorable by having a simple character on the surface, since most people would skip past males -- you have a small time-frame to make an impression (Young men ain't looking for a boyfriend. And being a buddy makes no money.)
You gotta show people up front what your deal is, what mask and theme they'll be staring at at first, before they see the real deal underneath.
You gotta be noticed before people will entertain your attempts of entertaining them.

>Audacity
Limp-wristed men get no respect from anyone, feel me? You couldn't even touch me! Embrace who you are and the character you play -- and never back down.

This'll be who you are for a few months and, if you're lucky, maybe a year. If you refuse to play the character (an extension of you) to your fullest potential, you'll be doing yourself a disservice.
Be bold, be brazen even -- but don't forget your audience and what they're looking for from you, and don't forget that, to some extent they don't know completely what they want, until you show it to them.

It's a good thing you've got a small following already, maybe tease them a bit on what you're working on.
Since it might be jarring for them if you suddenly become a vtuber if you haven't shown much of your character or personality through what you've drawn or funny little things you've sketched.

And don't forget that you'll always have people here to turn to, anon

As someone who has dealt with plenty of people in commissions the only thing you have to NOT do is ask for a discount. If you get the price back and go "ah sorry that's not in my budget right now" then I, as a reasonable human being, would naturally go "no problem man, hit me up whenever" and carry on with my day. I think you should prioritize your model, but having an off air sign and so on goes a long way in my opinion, on air and off air signs were the first things i drew after i got my first model finished, it's nice to spruce up your stream, i also made a small repeating gif i play at the start of the streams while i'm getting ready, maybe that's also something you'd like to look into after you get your model! gives you a little extra time to get prepared and time for people to mount up so the chat isn't completely still at the start of your stream.

Retarded. I would do this until recently now fuck it. A lot of the times I will ask for some sort of discount. For example a project that was 1100 I got down to 800. It's buisness, we're not friends. I don't have to like you or overpay. Now being reasonable is key. 50% off is insane. But making reasonable request is important, because every dollar saved is another dollar you can reinvest. If a normal picture is 30$ and I know at 20 I'll be able to afford x ammount, and can offer guaranteed ammounts of sales, then leverage that. Be respectful and be straightforward.

I might need some help with design ideas.
My character is a Zombie Wizard, and I want to get that idea across clearly before I get a proper model. the wizard part is easy. I've got a hat and robe.
For the zombie part, I had the idea of showing that someone else's skin was grafted on so I could be fully rebuilt. So I thought it'd be cool if there was a stitch down my face, and a different skin color above it, Maybe even a different eye color.
It took me a couple minutes to realize that's basically just Crazy Ollie.
I'm not fully giving up on the idea of that yet, but I'd definitely like to hear some ideas on how to make myself look like more of a zombie before my debut.
I'm going to at least put dark circles under my eyes, and try to make my hair look a bit longer and more ragged.
