Explain yourselves, Fubuki fans.

I'm watching Fubster play Sekiro and it turns out she can't read stuff like 櫓 or 庶家, despite being Japanese. I'm baka gaijin and I know those.

Both of them are not used in everyday Japanese, and it's likely that someone more into, say, old Feudal era drama would know what they are. It's similar asking an English speaker what sesquipedalian or pertinacious mean, but a couple degree harder. If you are Chinese or otherwise speak Mandarin, this goes doubly so.
You are basically picking bones with people because they don't read stuffs from a specific period of time, or because they didn't have a linguistic major, and trying to appear superior while at it.

Wow, extreme cope.

Consider that JLPT N5 to N1 test the 2136 kanji designated as common use by Japanese law. You really think that by passing N1 with a high score, I'm better than most Japanese people?

Or how about the fact that 2136 kanji are designated as common use and taught to every Japanese child through school years? That alone makes it clear you're clueless.

Also another example. There are these mentally ill people on twitter who want to change the language. Not in a natural way. You know gender speech etc. This will also never work since most people already struggle with the language as it is. Many experts agree. Oh my fucking God this thread. Stop sucking the joyo kanji list's dick so hard. It's a retarded list that includes relatively obscure moji that are barely used, and excludes some archi common ones like 綺麗. The "it's 2316" (I don't en n know the number, it's retarded) is an absolutely retarded statement done by people whose knowledge comes from reading like two paragraphs on Wikipedia.
The anon saying that most non literary inclined adults in Japan can properly read words with about 900 Kanji is probably right. There's plenty of evidence that the avg literacy of a Japanese adult is much lower than that of a high schooler (this should be obvious). Meanwhile, a literary inclined jp speaker can probably read over 3k, maybe 3.5k kanji.
lastly, op, you have been actively studying the language and probably using ssr as a tool to retain Kanji. Of course you know way more words than anyone other than a literary arts major. This should be obvious. Try being less retarded.

If you want to properly cope for not being able to learn Japanese, I recommend the 'japanese is going extinct' cope.
Just say that all young japanese people know english now, and they don't even know how to read kanji. Alternatively, say that japanese has so many english loan words that it's practically english. Either is good for a few (you)s every time.

No, a native adult japanese can read from 3000-5000 kanjis depending on age and how educated they are. But there are many more than that, and due to most kanjis having multiple readings it's possible you actually don't know the correct reading of a new word despite formed by kanjis you already know.
The minimum the government ask you to be able to read is around 2100 kanjis.
