What is /asp/?

A thread for aspiring vtubers! Whether your goal is to make the journey as an independent streamer or to gain experience and build a portfolio for agency auditions. Let's help each other grow and make it. Indies are welcome to selfpost, but shill responsibly. Share your knowledge, insights, feedback, discuss what has worked and what hasn't worked for you. And always remember to do your research before posting personally identifying information. That includes both in this thread and in your audition applications to agencies.

FAQ:
>Do I need a fully rigged model to be a vtuber?
Nope! You can get started as a simple .png character!

>I want to learn how to rig Live2D models, where do I go?
Brian Tsui (of Iron Vertex), Kira Omori and the official Live2D YouTube channels have many tutorials available.

>Where can I find artists/riggers?
vtuber.gg, ArtStation, DeviantArt, Twitter, Reddit, Skeb.jp, etc.

>I just want to get started, can I buy pre-made models?
Yes! Live2D models can be purchased off nizima.com (Live2D's official marketplace) or booth.pm (general Japanese indie artist website). Be sure to check compatibility with your facial tracking software!

>Where can I learn how to digital market myself?
https://learndigital.withgoogle.com/digitalgarage

>Where can I find some good games to stream?
https://twitchtracker.com/games
https://sullygnome.com/

>Twitch or YouTube?
The general rule of thumb is Twitch if your content is primarily based on livestreaming and YouTube if your content is primarily pre-recorded and edited.

>Do you think there's an audience for X, Y, Z content?
First, ask yourself if you would watch a streamer of your skill and experience. Second, do a check on social media and look to see if other streamers are already creating similar content. Don't limit yourself to vtubers, include traditional real life streamers to scope out a potential audience.

Also it is 3 am, peak viewers are Friday/Saturday nights. That alone or announcing your schedule mean far more than what game you pick. Want some cocaine?

Dear anon, the worst thing you could do besides not streaming is deleting your archived streams because you think they suck.

They do suck. You will learn and improve. Without mistakes or old content to reflect on you're missing the best part of streaming to me, which is streaming for yourself to see your own growth and improvement. It's the same as a drawfag looking back on their old art. Whether it's streaming, drawing, cooking, playing instruments, dating or having friends, we all have to start somewhere. The sooner you confront 0 view hell the sooner you can overcome it.

Don't get stuck, /asp/. Make your dreams happen!

Just getting a consistent schedule going for a while should be enough to pass their initial filter.

I'm gonna assume you mean a model or something. I am currently looking at a Fiverr artist that draws VTubers specifically for $65 and a Fiverr rigger for about $250. Get a designer to draw your character so it's very clear what the rigger should draw and rig. None of these artists can do clown face paint right so I might be in trouble with the getup I chose. At least that's what I am gonna do if Nijisanji falls through. As for equipment you don't need fancy shit at the beginning. That can be upgraded with time. I have the Sennheiser 660S. About $400. Costs a pretty penny but it's not at all a requirement. A mic is more important but I like the ease of use a headset mic provides so I use a wired antlion mic attached to my headset. About $60 for that.

Often, it's the viewer count that holds people back from affiliate, not the CCV.
Consider not mentioning it until after affiliate.

That said, I have done giveaways, and they can be a good way of spiking interest. If you're not doing a current game, reach out to the devs, too.

Last Halloween, I did a giveaway of Sunless Sea. It's a text-heavy 'horror' game, and I really enjoyed playing it myself before becoming a streamer (it's not a great stream game though).

I reached out to the devs, and asked if they'd be willing to send me a 50% off coupon or something, because I wanted to do a giveaway and really liked their stuff.

They gave me two copies of the game+dlc (~22 GBP/28 USD each), and didn't make me do anything.

So what might work is reaching out to whoever devs the game you played most during the stretch to affiliate.

Worst they can do is say no.

I’m about to hit affiliate already. After my 1st stream I was just missing the hours and days (currently sitting at 6 CCV and almost 90 followers). I’m on my 4th day of streaming so I just need 3 more streams on separate days to reach affiliate.

Twitch followers I’m gaining per day have been slowing down and my Twitter growth is way less than my Twitch growth so I was hoping a giveaway would help. I’ve seen people go from 0 to 1000 on both Twitch and Twitter with the right giveaways so I was hoping to bolster my numbers with one too since I’ll be reaching affiliate.

You're right, most people aren't except this means in all those months they've been doing nothing but spend dozens of hours on a character they aren't even using when they could've been doing that "creating" thing. A character doesn't need to be perfect, especially when you're a newbie starting from zero experience in content creation. Yes, and during those 16 months the only thing they did was draw and redraw and redraw the same character, right? Because that isn't real progress, nor is it comparable to the totally real example you're using. I've seen plenty of debuts that took months to a year also do great, and now some of them have maybe 15 viewers and are down thousands in money spent on art, assets, models, etc. A debut means just about as much as a raid if you don't have the skill to entertain those people.

No, they just commissioned off someone else to design and draw the character actually. I'm not sure what they were doing during that time, I just know the social media account laid dormant from late 2020 all the way until a few days ago, the YouTube account from January 2022, and another related account from July 2021.

It still doesn't matter, he pulls 500+ average with 10k+ on a lot of their youtube VODs despite putting in what seems like minimal effort into their content. is it as good as debut? Anon, the audition is open and you can resubmit every 3 months. Nene auditioned 4 times before she got accepted. Just keep honing your craft, this industry is only 4 years old ffs.
Think of it vtubing like prowrestling. Unless you're a one in a century talent like The Rock with connections to big promotions, you would need to pay your dues and make your name in the indies before moving on to the big leagues. Kenny Omega was rejected by WWE and made his name in the indies, went to smaller promotions, and now his name always comes up whenever people talk about the best wrestler in the world. Cody Rhodes was stuck as a lowly jobber in WWE for a decade, quit WWE to travel all over the world and make it on his own for 6 years, and was welcomed back to WWE like a king.
Compared to what these guys do to hone their craft and make a name for themselves, a year or two of accumulating streaming experience and entertaining audience as an indie is peanuts.

But I have an issue with the vtubers wanting to collaborate only having 1 or 2 viewers or being super inconsistent with streaming. I've worked hard to stream everyday and am getting 50 to 100 concurrent viewers now. Nothing ground breaking but something where it would be nice to collaborate with others taking it somewhat seriously. Even 8 to 10 concurrent is fine or lower as long as they stream often with non shit quality. Pretty much some one who puts in work. But I can't find people like that. this is a misconception when it comes to speaking. at best you'll only train yourself to fall into habits. it's the same as just talking japanese to yourself after reading a guide on how to pronounce romaji. you need to be listening as well as speaking to english speech to learn how things are pronounced.

if you're just talking in your accent all it does is reinforce that accent. your chat may help you learn how to pronounce one or two words correctly but for any substantial practice you need both listening and speaking.

okay, real talk for a sec, apologies to anons for shitting up the thread but i need to say things somewhere

first of all, by going babi i am dooming myself to a life of 2views. i am well aware of that and i didn't even plan to take money for my streams or play the whole popularity game. there's a hellish quality to being babi, as they say, and the type of content i streamed in the past has zero discoverability or popularity anyway. but "living vicariously" in an empty forest is indistinguishable from death

second of all, i don't care about this whole romantic/sexual attraction thing. i've never really felt that kind of attraction to another person. i tend to form friend relations with everyone and that's about it. so the idea of "ogling" or wanting to be "ogled" is foreign to me. it's more about my adoration of for the bishoujo aesthetic, if anything...

third of all, that's the thing they don't tell you. they keep implying that being trans is the worst thing that could happen to you, but what they don't tell you is that you don't stop by saying you're not trans. i want to feel like i belong in the fabric of society, and if i wanted to traumatize myself into not expressing certain feelings i'd just post on 4chan more often

there, now you can mock the everloving shit out of me

>how they get people to watch their videos considering all the clips
the secret is the algorithm. youtube shorts and tiktok are the exact same. they're an endless feed of short videos that people scroll through. they never pick or choose the video that pops up next. the algorithm does it all.

it tracks how long you watch, whether you like it or share it, download or favorite it and leave a comment. whether you stick around to watch it multiple times or when your finger leaves the screen for too long and you go afk. it tracks all of that and delivers you more content based off the data that it collects.

no chuuba is getting their videos seen by viewers online manually and no viewer is going out and searching for it. it's all done by the algorithm.

Voice changers aren't great for dramatic changes. They aren't magic. If you know what you're doing, you can tweak your voice - and a huge portion of streamers already do that.

If you have deep man voice, you aren't going to be a convincing pedobait. 99% of the time, you're better off just learning how to work with what you've got.

But if you absolutely insist, it takes more than just a voice changer software.

Find an opposite-gender voice type that's the closest to your real voice. If your real voice is deep male, go for smooth mommy voice. If your real voice is high pitched female, go for friendly excited gay dude. If your real voice is mid-range male, go for tomboy girl next door. Etc.

Don't add a layer of complexity unless you absolutely MUST. E.g., don't try to get rid of your natural accent, or add a new one.

If you can tweak to that level with a voice changer, have at it.

If you can't, look up videos on youtube of vocal feminization/masculanization for transgender people. Seriously, there's a boom for this shit these days, so take advantage of all the free content. Record yourself talking for a while. Read news articles or books or movie scripts or whatever out loud for an hour straight.

One you can do that without your throat hurting and you would listen to that person talk and think that they MIGHT be a chick/dude, use the software to get the rest of the way.

Plan for this taking at least 2-3 months before you do anything with it. Plan frequent break days at first because it will be tough on your throat until you get used to it (day on/day off at first, then break every 2-3 days, at minimum).

If you're not ready for all that, just give up and work with your real voice.

Most VTubers swear by maintaining kayfabe at all times. It's an expectation, really - I'm familiar with multiple communities where posting about a VTuber's non-IC life is frowned upon, and I've seen many people complain about VTubers who go OOC especially if it's to post selfies.

If you want to be able to go more OOC for zatsudan, stay IC and design your character's lore in a way which allows telling these stories.

Whaddyall think of my voice? I pulled this from my nijisanji audition submission... Also, I'm debating investing the resources into becoming an /asp/ie or to just stream with my face and stuff. I've streamed a couple of times in the past but only really just got the time to do it. Whatchall think? Pic is me irl if it helps a decision ig

Just wanna stream n chill but idk the best way to do it? I feel evenly divided between vtubing and streaming with my face

Please listen to this. Even if you love a subject don't box yourself in. I did that while I became very successful financially and view wise. People only wanted specific content from me. I had to fight to grow and when I did succeed I let it lapse and lost all the ground work I did. But even those other things were just more boxes, just bigger ones. Make your audience come for you not what you do.

Nope, I won't be doing OOC as in posting irl stuff, it's strictly vtuber for me.
I'm thinking of portraying an ultra narcissistic jerk, but during zatsudan I would be more chill and friendly and not in the jerk character, that's my definition of OOC, but I'm not sure whether it's viable or should I go full jerk mode 24/7

Corporate? Sure. Otherwise next to no indies do this, and most that do are nobodies because a majority of viewers are not looking for kayfabe outside of "Thanks for the follow, I'm glad you've decided to join the Space Federation!" and the occasional nod to it here and there.

You've got the occasional chuuba that stays totally in character and does well, but that character is usually either fujo or cunny baiting, and even then they'll talk about their trip to the farmer's market, someone rude they came across while at the bookstore, or other IRL things that clearly could not apply to most characters.

Just do a variation on the tsundere formula. Jerk on the outside, friendly when chill - with a bit of the other personality breaking out from time to time.

>I'm thinking of portraying an ultra narcissistic jerk
Unless you've got literal Dr. Disrespect or XqC levels of charisma, this is probably not a great idea unless you're trying to appeal to masochists with a degradation kink. You'll just look like an asshole unless you're basically a wrestler-style persona which will just get tiring.

I was thinking they meant something along the lines of "ultra narcissistic jerk to people who aren't their audience". Like the kind of person who screams incoherently in CS:GO.

I'm thinking more of a, "I'm the best thing that happened in this earth since sliced bread" kind of persona, not demeaning to the audience, but more egomaniac. "The ladies love me they just don't realize it yet" but I'm self aware that that's not the case.

This. Bonus points for calling your avatar an extension of your name for example if your irl name is Mark, your avatar could be called Maku-chan or some shit. Also bonus points for never putting on a 'voice' and just speaking normally. By and large, the avatar is (you) just with the facade of an anime gorl

So the wrestler route. Honestly, kayfabe in general gets old after a while both for the streamer and a lot of viewers and the more extreme it is, the more charisma you need to pull off.

OBS has filters built in, just right click your audio source on the mixer, hit Filter, and pitch yourself straight into NGMI. Ground's the limit really.

Being a narcissistic asshole stopped being cool + funny back in 2016. If I clicked onto a streamer and he/she started talking all high and mighty, i'd click off.

Plenty IRL streamers still pull it off, but I just don't think it's what the Vtuber audience is looking for. Whenever I show some of the normal streamers I watch to friends (both viewers and other chuubas) they immediately think they're jerks or assholes despite it clearly being a bit, and I assume it's because most didn't watch streamers until Vtubers and are just mindwarped from only watching these comfy and overly-friend Vtubers.

You don't really find Vtubers with the same attitude or personas as the IRL streamers out there, so it's a massive shock when that type of viewer sees someone berating their audience (and vice versa) even though both the audience and streamer know it's just banter and I think it's just the type of viewer that Vtubing attracts.

Pitch shifting alone is not a good idea. In general, for voice changing, the first important thing is to be able to control pitch and formant separately. In short - get RoVee and a VST host.

Either you're projecting or it's the half that doesn't matter apparently, I'm guessing the former considering all the larger people he's collabed and interacts with. Even if every single chuuba out there hated him it doesn't matter because it's the viewers you need to entertain, not other streamers. I personally don't like his content because he's way too loud for me and has too many effects going on, but that doesn't diminish his ability to entertain and pull in an audience no matter how much people want to bitch about him being obnoxious.

80% of his audience are other chuubas and artists trying to self promote. it's the same with artsygrandpa and jusagi.

Yeah, this definitely seems like projection. I'm autistic enough to go through his viewerlist and of the 20 random names I clicked, 4 were active streamers. Why can't people just accept he's got some decent viewership? There's plenty of people out there I dislike for either personal reasons or otherwise but I can still admit they're doing well.
