What is /asp/?

A thread for aspiring vtubers! Whether your goal is to make the journey as an independent streamer or to gain experience and build a portfolio for agency auditions. Let's help each other grow and make it. Indies are welcome to selfpost, but shill responsibly. Share your knowledge, insights, feedback, discuss what has worked and what hasn't worked for you. And always remember to do your research before posting personally identifying information. That includes both in this thread and in your audition applications to agencies.

FAQ:
>Do I need a fully rigged model to be a vtuber?
Nope! You can get started as a simple .png character!

>I want to learn how to rig Live2D models, where do I go?
Brian Tsui (of Iron Vertex), Kira Omori and the official Live2D YouTube channels have many tutorials available.

>Where can I find artists/riggers?
vtuber.gg, ArtStation, DeviantArt, Twitter, Reddit, Skeb.jp, etc.

>I just want to get started, can I buy pre-made models?
Yes! Live2D models can be purchased off nizima.com (Live2D's official marketplace) or booth.pm (general Japanese indie artist website). Be sure to check compatibility with your facial tracking software!

>Where can I learn how to digital market myself?
https://learndigital.withgoogle.com/digitalgarage

>Where can I find some good games to stream?
https://twitchtracker.com/games
https://sullygnome.com/

>Twitch or YouTube?
The general rule of thumb is Twitch if your content is primarily based on livestreaming and YouTube if your content is primarily pre-recorded and edited.

>Do you think there's an audience for X, Y, Z content?
First, ask yourself if you would watch a streamer of your skill and experience. Second, do a check on social media and look to see if other streamers are already creating similar content. Don't limit yourself to vtubers, include traditional real life streamers to scope out a potential audience.

My content is primarily pre-recorded (song covers and voice-acting shitposts) so I've been posting all of it onto Youtube, but I want to start streaming, too. Should I start on Twitch (which seems better for streamers) or Youtube (where most of my fans already are)?

If I didn't do chuubing, i wouldn't be on social media at all. But from the people i follow, yeah its full of mental health posting and it's awful. That's why i at least stopped doing it on twitter. It's not like /asp/ is going to generate me any viewers, so I'm abusing you guys a lil. (sorry, i still love you) I've been forcing myself to post only a little here and this is kinda my neutral mode, if I'm sad I'm actually becoming insufferable. I'll have to properly act like a mint worshipper and start spreading positivity more like her, i just wished it came more natural to me.

Don't even frame this as if you're worshipping someone else by spreading positivity. Spreading positivity is a good thing! It's infectious! You do good for other people by spreading positivity and encouraging them to be positive.
If you don't have anyone close to you that you can confide in (or a therapist), you should seriously go to places on the internet designated specifically for venting to do so. The people reading those places read them because they are ready to listen. Go to /adv/ or any of the numerous subreddits devoted to venting.
I'm not trying to insult you or anything here, but your chuuba persona probably isn't really the place for it.

Why are there so many bad riggers pretending to be skilled making "fancy" rigging like extreme angles and other stuff when they have 0 knowledge of art, perspective, etc. I've seen so many pretty models get ruined by shit rigging where it doesn't even look like the artist style anymore or people praising rigs moving like jello seaweed as god tier rigging.

The only decent indie riggers are all artists but they don't get commissioned as much as the shitty ones. People are going to look at the bust up 99% of the time so shouldn't that be the most important thing to get right?

You won't get judged for being a procrastinator or anything, if that's what you're worried about. Everyone in this fucking industry is, seems like. The only real danger is if there are some banger applications that are reviewed ahead of you, some reviewers might have them locked into a role and judge yours more harshly against them, if that makes sense? But a professional agency would judge each application fairly, no matter when it's submitted
>>20800918
Well obviously if you have a Holomama or papa, you can lean into that predebut to generate easy hype. Cost isn't that important though. Or I should say, there isn't always a correlation between cost and quality. There are some god-tier unknown riggers and artists with great commission rates if you look hard enough. But quality art and rigging does factor heavily into audience growth
>>20800985
It heavily varies between agencies. Some specifically scout or judge applications based on how well they think everyone will get along (as well as individual talent), and others don't give a shit. If you really look hard enough, it's pretty obvious which ones care and which ones don't

Fuck I've spoken in real life to so many artists like you and it's fucking infuriating.
When are you going to get a grip retard and realize 'muh artstyle' is just as much a cope and excuse as anything else?

I've told artists who produce good art that they already have a marketable skill in talks with them, and it's always "it's not even good."
The point isn't even to be good. It's to be good enough and humble enough, to do something beneath you.
There's tons of dipshits out there who can sketch out the entire linework of something finished, or who can make it a unique style, who don't, because they're coping they do bad work, or they want to establish something.

You establish a style by putting it out into the world.
It doesn't have to be FULLY PRODUCED to be GOOD or even MARKETABLE.

You want an idea spoonfed to you retard?
Mecha-moe tank girls 4koma. If some retard can do it with jet-girls, then you can as well. There's a massive gap there in the market, it has people who can fill it. It just needs one person to believe they can be it.

Overall my point is, you can start producing right now, you have literally nothing to lose, and everything to gain and with your skills, it shouldn't take nearly as much effort or time as other forms of produced content if you're doing things that are barely above the fundamentals of your skill.
Simplified, black and white koma, with artistic choices of your discretion should be piss easy. Not to mention digital art (especially in an obviously sequential or serialized format) is the most piss easy thing to market. You can literally just upload the image anywhere with a tag to your twitter anywhere and nobody will be able to even connect it to self-advertising.

Just fucking do bitch.

Most of them aren't great and are based on loose predictions of a fairly new medium, but it's better than others who just threw money at artists because they have disposable income and think they can be just like Yagoo. That's surprisingly common and it's a great idea to ask about a long-term plan in interviews.
Niji seems to be the only one taking the spray-and-pray approach to debuts, but it makes business sense. They really only need a couple breakout talents to recoup their total investment, and with the power of their brand, that's a guarantee. Sucks to be one of the ones that doesn't get huge (picrel), but hey, at least you get autonomy since they don't give a fuck what you do in 2view hell.

Here's the thing about Twitch: networking is EVERYTHING. I just counted and there are 171 streams with the VTuber tag on Twitch right now with only 1 viewer. The Twitch market is saturated to hell right now, to the point where just having a rigged model and going live isn't enough to get people to watch. The best viewers you could ever have in your audience are other VTubers. Don't be an autistic loner and just talk to them on social media or in their streams. Build friendships. Help each other, because this industry can be ruthless
>>20802858
It makes it harder to judge your personality, but it's not a dealbreaker. Ideally, one of the responsibilities of your manager is to help you maintain an online presence, so you won't be alone in that. But be aware that maintaining an online presence is a constant fucking grind. You literally cannot take a day off from it if you want to do it right, and agencies want someone who will do it right. It might take some convincing to make them believe you can do that, especially if you're in the running against someone with a proven track record.
>>20803205
Twitter is the most important tool you can have for networking with other VTubers, which is great because it's so fucking easy to use. >>20803571 is correct about number growth though. If you're just worried about numbers, there's a lot of other grinding and luck involved on Twitter (its algorithm can be abused just like YouTube's, but it's still a fickle thing), but if you're looking to reach out and make friends, it's way easier than most people think. But most people are too scared to try in the first place

I want to counterbalance though. There is a bare minimum that is interesting. If your model design and your channel design are not generic gamerbro/lo-fi anime kinda vibe, that may still get people to click.
What I’m saying is, just a model is not enough, but a good looking channel still attracts people if they see it.
It helps to screenshot your own thumbnail and check it against twitch search results to see if it’s eye catching.

Let me clarify: once you get to THAT level, where the brand basically sells itself, the quality of entertainer that you can get is so high that it would be incredibly unlikely to come from someone that isn't battle tested, so to speak. There's going to be many more applicants in that talent pool that have years of experience and success already, and they'll always be safer to go with. To use my previous examples, the talent pools that Tsunderia and PRISM Project are picking from are lower quality on average, so there are more openings for untested talents.
tl;dr There's no official number filter, but it's pretty natural that chuubas with numbers tend to get more corpo spots than literal nobodies.

When I do public speaking like extemporaneous speaking events, emceeing, doing reports, etc. I always have the entire room staring at me because I know how to project an aura of confidence. But what people don't know is that my hand literally shakes on its own beyond my control. Anxiety will stay there but you can learn how to "ignore" how your body feels. My advice would be to just do it. Focus on providing a good experience for everyone instead of focusing on your feelings. You will forget about that anxiety if you keep yourself busy. It also helps to come prepared with a list of topics relating to whatever you're doing that way you can rely on tools instead of experience (which you obviously lack at the moment). Given time, you will be less and less anxious as you grow more confident in your speaking skills.

Nepotism is a form of favoritism which is granted to relatives and friends in various fields, including business, politics, entertainment, sports, fitness, religion, and other activities. The term originated with the assignment of nephews to important positions by Catholic popes and bishops.

Yes, your audio on discord will always suck (but make sure to keep your gain to a manageable level so you can at least not sound like ass on your end) and your audio on stream will be louder than what you hear on your desktop. I recommend audio testing on a separate testing account.

May have to shell out some shekels for a vocal coach. I'd recommend reading books out loud and over enunciating the words. Record yourself doing that and keep trying until you get a sound you think is good. This'll take days to weeks (I'd know cuz I had the same problem with my ESL accent but it's much lesser now). It also helps to surround yourself with native english speakers and their accents will subconsciously rub off on you.

Every single job I've ever worked at has had a "nepotism" hire or two. It is only natural that someone that a trusted employee can vouch for will get preferential treatment compared to other applicants with the same skills, especially in a line of work where you want the applicant in question to get along convincingly with the rest of your employees on the air.
I've never been the nepotism hire or gotten anyone close to me hired but in all honesty, I have always found the people I work with that complain the most about nepotism hires are often doing so from a place of insecurity. It doesn't look good to complain about something like that in my opinion.

Applications definitely get looked at before the submission deadline. Otherwise you'd have to go through thousands of applications and videos, on top of checking references and other related shit like that. It just takes too much time which pushes back other deadlines down the line. It's best to get a headstart on it when you can to make things easier down the road.

Hangover isn't too bad, thankfully. Best advice I can give is to practice voice acting lines from anime dubs to help with diction and cadence. Try out some Steve Blum monologues from The Big O, Ah! My Goddess, or Chobits, your voices have similar timbre. You need to sound natural and keep up those speaking patterns for extended periods, but if it feels like you're reading a script, it's not going to work.

i want to apply to Nijisanji/holostars but since all the youtube channels I've ever had with any kind of audience are years old, I feel like my digital footprint will somehow come back to bite me in the ass and starting from scratch will essentially doom me because it will come across like I have no experience.

gura's old content was spaced out and she had very little active presence, even now with barely ever tweeting. i think it's fine as long as the potential is there
