I wouldn't worry about follower milestones - followers don't always translate to CCV, which doesn't always translate to income.
I would start with a PNG, or a vroid if you only just know what you're doing. Make it pretty basic, and cheap (if you commission it), so that you're not out much if it turns out you don't like vtubing.

Consider upgrading to either a good vroid, a basic vroid, or L2D next. Personally, I set this goal as "once I'd covered all my previous costs", but got super lucky with someone willing to do a vroid for cheap. It's not ideal, but it's better than my PNG was.
I am looking to get a better vroid, but not sure whether my old mama would want to do it - I'd reached out to her previously on asking if she could make changes (I'd pay), and she bounced back with "Hey, sorry, but I'm working with other commissions. If you want, get someone else to do it!". So I don't really want to recommission her again, because I'm evidently lower priority than new clients.

Then think about going for a top-tier 3d, customised in blender; or a well-rigged L2D. L2D is slightly easier to make edits to (you can alter the base file, if you want to change the iris/colour, which you can do easily in vroid); but vroid only requires one person to make.

I will probably commission my friend again for my new model. I think the admiral could be better (the hands are kinda weird and some other stuff looks awkward), but i paid almost nothing for it and this has been like 5 years ago, and he's improved a lot. Also i think finding decent 3D wizards isn't that easy. I really like the style of the guys who've done the girl_dm model (i think they did nyanners and some other popular ones) but i don't like their terms.

I don't know if it's gonna help stream popularity if i use a 3D custom male model because it might not be hot 2D anime boys that gets all the fujos (and the model doesn't matter much to begin with), but honestly i just don't like 2D. picrel is draft design, artist is very swamped with work so i'll have to wait a little, but he's a professional artist so i can expect great results especially since he's helping me coming up with a sick design.

While I'm here, any advice for spicing up a character design? I can draw the basics (badly) myself, but I'm wholly lacking in imagination when it comes to detail that makes it "interesting" to look at.

For reference, the character concept is a WWII-esque aviator, but from a parallel universe so that I don't run into any history issues with a potential American Japanese audience split. I've got the basic aviator design down but I have a lot less of a clue what to do to make him "unique."

People here seem to have a lot of interest in getting custom 3D models down the line but indies in general aren't well equipped to take advantage of 3D models. For most of the streamers I follow I would rather see that money go into alt outfits, a 2.0 model, or a rigging upgrade. And honestly unless you pay for a high tier modeller or find an undercharging artist outside of vtubing, most mid tier 3D models don't look that different from a good vroid.

Artgun (the modeler you mentionee) also doesn't do very good males, check out the vtuber Versus for an example. Great shounen concept art but very poor execution on her part in my opinion. They're much better at women or creatures.

A lot of what you will be showing is a moving bust, so pack some fine details on the head. An easy example is Subaru's tricolor eyes, idol suit and hair highlights.

I can see it as being a detractor as far as being a onetrick gamer, but at the same time like Selen showed it opens a lot of possibilities of cross pollination of audiences. There aren't a lot of Vtubers out that that are skilled at competitive games, much less actually good or great at them. At the end of the day though nothing stops you from NOT playing your main game and playing something that's trending or you enjoy.

That being said it also depends on the genre since shooters seem to have the biggest audience outside of MOBAs which aren't as fun to watch but if you're somehow top 20 DOTA/League player in your region I doubt it'd be that big of an issue since those are both huge games with huge audiences anyway.

I'm considering getting into VTubering because people have been bugging me to do some sort of streaming for ages now, and I've been an avid fan of VTubers since 2019 and it honestly feels like a great fit for me.

The thing that absolutely terrifies me is that out of morbid curiosity, I went to Twitch and sorted live VTuber streams from lowest viewercount, ascending and uhh...

There were well over 1200 live streams with 2 viewers and below. 30 of them had 0 viewers at all.

How the hell do you make it big when the Vtuber space is as absurdly oversaturated as it is now? What's even the point of this thread? It seems to me that unless you're in some sort of well-advertised corpo group, you're absolutely screwed.

while you're right that the vast majority of streamers do sit at that sub 5 viewership, its important that you understand that a big part of getting noticed is marketing, networking, and interacting with others
a lot of the people who sit under 2 viewers are the ones that just hit go live and don't promote themselves or anything. even just by being /here/ (asp and wvt) there's a solid network of people who would be more than willing to help you out as you get started especially if you can be entertaining

When I was still a babiniku I had about 15-some-odd viewers who were mainly coomers I kept in check and closeted (or open) fags that just assumed I was gay or thought I was "cute". Swapping to a male design instantly helped my viewer retention and growth as far as newer viewers got and I did zero fanfare, just swapped to a masculine version of my current design.

People do care but not in the sense that they think you're "deceiving" them, just in the sense that it's not something most people are interested in even among anime fans, babiniku acceptance is very much a Japanese thing for the most part. There's no coincidence there's so few with viewers who aren't openly trans. I won't say that you can't succeed as one but it absolutely is a very large debuff.

twitter followers have no saying about the artist's skill level. you have to look at what they are drawing and if it's what you want. and i don't mean just drawing skill. there are other factors such as how good they are at commissions and working with a client. for my commission i deliberately went for someone who worked professionally with video game companies before, because i know i can expect someone who is great at communicating and knows how to work with someone else's vision.

drawing good is one thing, but it gets a lot harder when you have to draw for someone else. you can get twitter followers by posting good art but if you are a good artist who can do more than that doesn't even need twitter. try to get a feel for the person and even talk to them before, talk about what you want and see if it's likely they will deliver that. if you were talking about exposure or whatever, i don't think it matters who made your model.
