While tracing is a bad practice and definitely should not be encouraged, I don't understand how some people can say it's wholesale stealing. From my experience, the hardest and most time consuming parts or drawing are things like coloring and shading, i.e. things that have nothing to do with the line work. Sketching a character in a certain pose is the easy part once you've taken the Loomis pill and learned all the proportions of the human body. Again, what Nene did was wrong but she still did the heavy lifting, so to speak, herself.
The question then is if it's so easy why did Nene trace in the first place? The only answer I can give is that Nene is, well, Nene.

Other people have commented on this but as a drawfag myself from what I can tell Nene did both tracing and close reference with a lot of redrawing. The parts I think she actually traced were the hands and parts of the leg. Hands are fucking hard and legs when the character is sitting are actually really hard too. Even "realistic' drawings look bad sometimes because the hips, legs, and knees are weirder than people realize. She also used close reference (think those drawings divided into squares where you can replicate a drawing that seems much more difficult if you were to free hand it. Not literally that technique but you get the idea) but she also redrew a large percentage. Obviously the coloring/shading was her own. Newbie artists often do stuff like this, or hide the hands, or give characters gauntlets, gloves, paws etc to avoid this pain specifically so they can focus on the parts they are improving on. For amateurs no one really cares. Since the artist she traced is apparently a friend and literally getting paid to do Nene illustrations she blew it off. Nene is obviously an amateur and has cultivated an image as kind of an airhead so only a few artists are actually salty about it. Your average person barely understands why this is a problem

I think in the context of streaming she'll be fine aside from some occasional anti comments, but I'm more worried about stuff outside of streaming. Companies outside of Hololive are going to be a lot more apprehensive of working with her now. Things like a lot of the promotional stuff she would be a part of, or her trying to get into voice acting, those are probably going to be a lot harder/less frequent. But that might also mean she's less likely to take on more than she can handle and wont overwork herself again.
