First of all I don't understand subathons at all, like legit can someone explain the concept.
But on top of that, twitch subs arnt permanent and you can buy gift subs that get distributed to random people? So it isn't even that people are deciding they like your content and want to sub, it's just rich guys buying a ton of gift subs.
I know it's silly to shit on a culture you don't understand but, the whole thing seems kinda silly and cringy.

A subathon definitely isn't 100% just about the money, at least not one of her magnitude. Take a look at Ludwig's. While he didn't have nearly as much takehome income, that subathon put him on an even bigger spot on the map than he already was. He IS the "subathon guy" and the reason they've been as popular as they are now. Big subathons get you lots of attention which can lead to lots of new viewers. It's like winning the lottery choosing between a lump sum or a longterm payment plan, except you stand to gain both instead.

That subathon got her a lot of notoriety, enough that a lot of my favorite normal streamers have talked about her quite a bit, even people bigger than her.
