This shit happens ALL THE FUCKING TIME. Yes, even in professional industries.
There's entire games with actual, literal stolen assets still for sale right now, big games. Fucking Mass Effect being a great example.

I'm disappointed she'd go that low, she definitely didn't need to, she is a very capable drawer as evidenced by any time she drew live.
She likely did it for time like the reasons most others trace and "heavily reference" other works.
The fact she did it poorly is no surprise. You don't do a direct trace, you take the image, draw some outlines around it quickly on a new layer, you pixelate that outline, move move some poses around, then you do your OWN outlines over that layer.
That way at least you are making it "your own".
On a related note, this is also a good way to practice sketching things quickly if you go further and do another step. Hide your traced sketch layer and try recreate the sketch from memory, you quickly learn how to draw things properly and stylistically without "shaky lines" everywhere or being hampered by indecision.
