What is /asp/?

A thread for aspiring vtubers! Whether your goal is to make the journey as an independent streamer or to gain experience and build a portfolio for agency auditions. Let's help each other grow and make it. Indies are welcome to selfpost, but shill responsibly. Share your knowledge, insights, feedback, discuss what has worked and what hasn't worked for you. And always remember to do your research before posting personally identifying information. That includes both in this thread and in your audition applications to agencies.

FAQ:
>Do I need a fully rigged model to be a vtuber?
Nope! You can get started as a simple .png character!

>I want to learn how to rig Live2D models, where do I go?
Brian Tsui (of Iron Vertex), Kira Omori and the official Live2D YouTube channels have many tutorials available.

>Where can I find artists/riggers?
vtuber.gg, ArtStation, DeviantArt, Twitter, Reddit, Skeb.jp, etc.

>I just want to get started, can I buy pre-made models?
Yes! Live2D models can be purchased off nizima.com (Live2D's official marketplace) or booth.pm (general Japanese indie artist website). Be sure to check compatibility with your facial tracking software!

>Where can I learn how to digital market myself?
https://learndigital.withgoogle.com/digitalgarage

>Where can I find some good games to stream?
https://twitchtracker.com/games
https://sullygnome.com/

>Twitch or YouTube?
The general rule of thumb is Twitch if your content is primarily based on livestreaming and YouTube if your content is primarily pre-recorded and edited.

>Do you think there's an audience for X, Y, Z content?
First, ask yourself if you would watch a streamer of your skill and experience. Second, do a check on social media and look to see if other streamers are already creating similar content. Don't limit yourself to vtubers, include traditional real life streamers to scope out a potential audience.

Let's look at Hearts of Iron IV (HoI), Needy Streamer Overdose (NSO), and Minecraft (MC). I've filtered my twitch to English because I'm EOP.

Currently, NSO has three streamers, with 2,5,16 viewers. There's 5k followers of the game, if you stream to no audience, you're top row, so you might get some people pop in... But it's not exactly a hugely popular one. There's not likely to be lots of people coming to watch.
HOI has eight streamers, at 15, 9, 2*2, 4*1. It's got 375k followers, so if you can get a CCV of 3, you're top row, and could well pick up anyone else interested in watching the game. This could well be good for getting new viewers.
MC has 13k viewers. Top 12 streams all have 100+ viewers, so even though there's 42m followers, you're not likely to get many - they won't see you.

NSO is a low streamed game. I had fun streaming it, but it's over a week old, and lots of people played it. It's pretty much a VN, there's it's not a sandbox, and it's text heavy. Part of the appeal was the meta humour. I expect it to trickle along for years as people discover it, play it a bit, and then drop it.

At the minute, I'd say HOI is an underrepped game. You join now, you'll get people willing to hop in and watch (so long as you're not shit long term). Do challenge runs in game, and attempt to get achievements, people will come (I've done it, for similar games). They might sometimes come to other games (I have had luck pulling them to similarly styled things.

Minecraft is oversaturated. Finding anyone in there is like finding a needle in a haystack, except the needle is invisible, and the haystack is full of kids screaming.

Being a full on variety is not ideal. But if you theme some streams (I dunno, WW2 games on Wednesday/Thursday?), you might be able to cultive a decent audience.

Fallen doesn't actively coomer bait, apart from the kisses, but given her whole thing is the loli aesthetic, she also sort of does.

That said, it's also great for getting oil barons, especially if you're willing to bait them.

Do you watch much in the way of ASMR in the first place?

Also, how degen are you willing to go? GFE roleplay is popular (see VividlyASMR, FallenShadow, LemonLeaf, SkittyKat), but you can couch it in terms of "pub landlady/hairdressed talks with you" (goodnight moon is a great example); rather than someone sleeping with the listener.
If you want to do actual GFE style, then Nene Amano, Babypink, and WholesomeGirlfriendASMR are good ones to emulate.
Take it up a notch, and do NSFW GFE. Again, Babypink, SkittyKat is a good example, Varyunya, DudeTLewd too.
Or go down the mouthsounds/mic stroke - Ikumi, Gaon MaiMai. Technically, it's not lewd... But we all know it is.
Or just go and record yourself stirring a pot of mac'n'cheese.

Also, check out Hilentsu. She does AMAZING asmr.

With what you need to do, as an ASMRtist, you'll be doing triggers for people.
Make notes on this. Does BigLad97 always request humming on your 1500pt "pick a trigger" redeem? Well, whenever you see him come into stream and post for the first time, hum a little bit for him. If he mentions he's applying for a job, ask him about it next time.
For me, ASMR actually gives me the tingles up the back of the head, and sends me to sleep. I love listening to it for that. But then a lot of the female asmrtists also then lean into doing actual adult audio, which I also put on (but not for relaxing).

Ikumi (I know, coomer bait) does two things that I'd highly recommend doing/checking out:
- she has 'characters'. So a tsundere catgirl maid, who nays and purrs and nuzzles the mic. A tomboy wolf/dog who growls and speaks more sharply. "Momiku" who calls you a good boy and praises you for working hard... And then lets chat vote on which one she'll do a 30 minute roleplay as if she hits a certain number of subs per streams. She comms art of each of them.
- If she reaches certain bit/dono tiers a stream, she'll do specific triggers.

She absolutely milks her chat. Watch her.

Starting from zero zero is tricky all around, nobody who clicks a zero viewer is expecting a normal streamer talking non stop or even acknowledgement (Don't say hi when you see someone join and God please do not have a chat bot welcoming people, only say hi when people say hi first.)

Anyone who opens these streams is just curious, the best you can do is focus on enjoying the game, music, or whatever you are doing and giving genuine reactions like laughing or frustration. That's why a lot of people stream while playing with friends in a voice chat so there's already "something" going on and it doesn't seem like the streamer is waiting for someone to say hi in chat. So you have to emulate something like that; enjoy whatever you are doing and maybe it will be interesting to someone.

Starting from zero is tough, having that 5 viewers from a discord, other twitch community or whatever makes all the difference.

I'm not even sure what you're trying to say, none of it made sense at all. The reason every other streamer isn't blowing up is because just the act of doing something isn't enough, you still need to be an entertaining streamer or content creator yourself.

>people are only going to watch the top viewing streams regardless if they are actually entertaining or not
Then how do new names keep consistently popping up and growing all the time? They create content, others like the content they're creating despite it being the same thing others are creating essentially, except with their own personality or whatever they bring to it. Look at all the top Vtubers, or even just streamers in general.

Do you not see a difference between someone with 50 views and someone with 5,000 at all? There's people who have hovered in the 50-range for years despite others coming up from nothing to thousands of viewers in that time or less even though people are supposedly"only going to watch whoever has the numbers".

£10 for a cheap microphone to begin with, £100 for an updated one when that broke. (£390).
Probably around £100 in games, although I'd probably planned on playing most of them anyway?

Other than that, I also spent £3500 on a top-end PC (3090 and all the everything else), but I needed a new one anyway.

Fair, "cash cat" thing like the meta to start vtubin is buying stuff immediately, this is the same shit that happened in twitch streaming when it started being profitable. Makes an industry of artists to specialize in making xyz for stream assets, then the streamer house 1k plus in red is a 0 viewer andy. It's putting the cart before the horse, which is okay if you're willing with losing some cash or just in it for fun BUT it seems like its the requirement or your at a much larger disadvantage than what that disadvantage is in reality. nta but I don't understand this part? You mean it's not as big of a disadvantage as people make it seem, or it is a disadvantage? I think not having something decent can be, even as a chuuba I'll admit I usually click on things that are visually attractive in some waybut I think that's the same with most people, it's the reason thumbnails are even a thing.

>Where there are other risks that aren't spoken about like a big chance of fucking up that art buy, like for me idk art/design outside typography I don't think I'm going to be able to articulate a design that will be worth the money
Vtubing is honestly pretty risk-free aside from the chance an artist will phone it in or just put you on a backburner for a year but the only reason they get away with that is because people are such pussies they let them get away with it with no backcharge, confrontation, or callout.

Not being able to articulate what you want shouldn't be that big of an issue though since everything you could possible want has been done already, making it easy to piece together a series of references (hair, clothing, accessories, visual personality, designs similar to what you want, etc) via making a collage of different design traits you like. A good character designer should be able to piece together a decent design from these since it's how they typically operate anyway.

I mean both, yes its a disadvantage however it's not so being that it should be your first problem to fix for your growth.

The disadvantage to having a png light up as your talking or even no img/model at all, isn't as large as one thinks. Where end of the day your trying to make content people want to watch, were sure having those elements help the stream but it isn't make or break for content creators. Look at most ani-tubers huge ones are faceless video-essaists.

>Vtubing is honestly pretty risk-free aside from the chance an artist will phone it in or just put you on a backburner for a year

Mostly talking quality and if it fits what your brand is and getting stuff that isn't just cookie cutter/phoned in.(even worse if your new and can't tell)

There's a lot of ephemeral things you want out of a character design to communicate and to let you get the most out of it comedy/entertainment where the more it links with your personality the stronger the engagement. Imagine if k-on came out with the meta art style of the time(which everyone hated but no production wanted to risk change), it would have severely hurt its chances of growing to what is a medium changing show. (for another extreme example imagine loli voice on a dommy mommy model or vice versa, you don't know how your personality may resonate with your audience or how you'll grow as an entertainer)

>Maybe highkey try to structure your posts a little bit more youngblood
i refuse also the only advantage to being terrible with english is vtuber wise my audience thinks i'm retarded since I sound like a loli, it doesn't effect my real work and lets me play up the character.

I'm going to need models which, in addition to being usable for normal vtubing purposes in a program like VSeeFace, also have rigs with inverse kinematics that will let me easily animate with them in Blender, and also be a humanoid in Unity so I can easily apply animations for game development purposes. I'm not sure we're talking about the same thing. I'm referring to this, which is used for animation:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0bFrZn8xlLw
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S-2v_CKmVE8

The movement of the bone at the end of a chain of bones is used to reverse engineer the positions of the bones prior to it, instead of vice versa (FK). Every VRM I've seen does not do this despite it being very common, and I don't know if this is normal or some kind of requirement of the format.

>> No.17572566

IK is a software thing, like I said. You need to edit the model's armature, which is literally what the first guide says. VRMs are just humanoid models, you can apply this same guide to them. Oh goddamn it. I take it that this means something's going wrong when I import a VRM into Blender. I should have assumed that this was the case, rather than assuming that they didn't have IK. Thanks, Anon. In that case, wouldn't any VRM fit the usage criteria I outlined?
>(VRM or otherwise)

>> No.17574212

>>17573563
Any VRM and realistically any 3D model with a humanoid armature would fit the usage criteria, yes. Aside from VRM, other formats used with a humanoid armature work depending on the program, VRM is just the most common for Vtubing. I believe the VShojo 3D users are using and FBX format for example, and others who use VSeeface use a format they created(?) called VSF that allows for many more options than a VRM does if you know anything about Unity, but really it doesn't matter if you're animating the model by hand and not with a webcam, iphone, or other external tracking solution.

If you are, just stick to VRM+Webcam or Iphone and Vseeface

For vtubing, it's not the models that have IK. That's all managed by the software. The model just needs to have a standard humanoid rig with the hip bone being the root. If you spend time in blender to set up IK for your model, it won't translate to any vtubing software, so don't bother unless you want to animate in blender.

>>17574212
When they're not using full body, they're using VSeeFace I think, so it's still VRM or VSFAvatar, which is VRM with extra Unity components. There isn't really any vtuber software that directly uses FBX other than maybe hitogata.

my model is currently halfway done and im starting to think about the actual lead up. my plan was to try and create a twitter to promo and gain traction, do a few lower-key pre debut streams and do a 'real' debut when i hit 1k. does this sound like a good idea or too lofty? honestly a lot of my peers havent done debut streams, just jumped into it straight or have ignored the idea of follower milestones, but that seems impatient to me.

hello frens been streaming for a good year, but considering i don't actually use any social media i obviously have basically no viewers still, on top of that i work full time in shifts and im an eurofag so stream times are not very consistent or convenient.

I've been tweeting a little bit recently, but i hate using the site spamming hashtags and interacting with others just to have a chance to get some exposure. id rather have my profile be free of that and only contain random garbage thoughts and the occasional topical shittake. (+ stream start link)

i enjoy vtubing and i definitely don't want any money out of it, but having like 10-100 viewers would make it more interesting because i like interacting a lot.

please never stream with 0-1 views. before the first second of video you should already have people watching. otherwise it is not worth it and it is better to do a reset and start everything from the beginning or do something else.

I don't stream but I had a small yt channel about 10 years ago (700 - 800 subs). I shared the first video with my RL friends and it started with 10 views. from there only 2 shared it, but it gave a little more visits and only 1 sub.

With the following videos, the algorithm never helped me. What helped me was having some interesting content for a niche, a lot, a lot of networking, and luck. that gave slow growth, 100 views videos.

one day a post with a video of mine became momentarily popular and gave me 5k views and about 50 subs. that gave me the momentum to grow faster and reach 500+ subs.

now these days that you have more competition it is very necessary that you have an audience before you start. organic growth no longer exists. now it's about having a stable audience, creating great content and doing a lot of networking just to have a chance to momentarily go viral and build on the momentum. Without that momentum you're not going to get anywhere with this. in the end it's 80% luck, but if you don't do any of that you lose the opportunity.

Do what your style dictates; I'm essentially making a "realistic" model for my purposes, and it's been fun to learn how to adjust for my project's style from the tutorials I've seen. (Who knew jiggle physics could apply to non-organic models?)

(Apologizes if I'm wrong; I'm a blender noob and will essentially be doing the same thing you are)
Have you exported the material used in the model? Depending on the format by which you exported your model, the materials may not be included, in which case, you'll have to export the material and re-apply it in Unity

that's like saying don't be a streamer if you haven't streamed before
how else would you gain experience?

The difference is that managing shit has a lot more money on the line and has a lot more to take into consideration. Manager is literally not a job for the inexperience, literally any kind of manager.

Clicking a few buttons in OBS and talking to a screen is slightly less complex than starting a business. Want experience? Get education in a related field and then a job in a mass media company.

What's the best course of action if you play games with some close friends who are also streamers, but one of em insists on referring to you by your real name? I get he doesn't care if people know their name, but I'd still appreciate if they called me by my "stage name". This isn't a friend I'm willing to ditch over something as simple as a name, though

You've got two options anon:
1 - Let him dox you
2 - Don't play with him

That's it. If he refuses to refer to you by your stage name, then there's not really anything else you can do.

Or you know, just don't stream while playing with your friend?

>now these days that you have more competition it is very necessary that you have an audience before you start. organic growth no longer exists
Pretty much what I learned from watching Pippa's debut.

Oh, I've seen this before with IRL streamers.
Just don't play with him on stream if he can't do that for you, swapping name usage isn't difficult so if he's insistent on using your real name from the getgo then there's no hope of getting him to change his mind and the issue shouldn't be pushed. If he's salty that you won't play with him then that's on him, it's the difference between just him having to adjust his language slightly vs your stream being a little awkward for the viewers.

It sounds like he wants to collab with his friends since they're also streamers though?

Dude is making efforts building himself a persona, no matter how good friend they are he can't just let him destroy that.

Well I think you should work on that first. When I say networking is not just having contacts, it can be good to have some that are in the field or with similar topics, but the best ones for me were the ones that I genuinely liked and I honestly commented on them. I wasn't good at initiating friendships (outside of the few RL friends), but I suppose that they, seeing a genuine intention, approached me, even inviting me to their group. After a while you become the one that others comment on and you can help the new ones.

Regarding your problem, you can try doing activities with other people or participate in a community and try to find people who genuinely interest you.
