Are they merely pretending to not speak English or they actually don't bother learning?

They don't bother learning.

And why should they?

It's pretty hard to learn English if you're Japanese. Katana and the loan words that come with it fuck up your brain so you pronounce stuff wrong and the structure is completely different

Korone has legit been learning the English language for about a year now. Many of the other JPs have started as well. Hell Marine, Haachama, and Polka have all tried learning and speaking English multiple times.

Sentence structure and mouth formation are always the biggest problems when it comes to learning a language. Having worked with some first gen Indians has really helped me understand why broken English works so well when talking to an ESL. Funny part is people used to give me dirty looks for talking in broken English to them even though it was the simplest way to get my points across and they appreciated it.
That being said, I would love to speak broken English with this cute dog.

>How dare the JP team learn to speak English!
>How dare they try to increase their reach and get bigger fanbases outside of Japan!
>How dare they try to make more money for themselves!
>This is MY secret club, and unless you want to learn Japanese, you're NOT INVITED!
/jp/ ladies and gentlemen.

>> No.1688352

Not really pretending. They just didn't think they would need to use English again after school. I remember learning french in school and barely using it now. ID speak better English than most of JP. Though, the charm of earnestly speaking another language to cater to your foreign audience and flubbing here and there is cute in its own way. I think they get a better response speaking broken english instead of speaking fluently.

On top of English education in Japanese being atrocious, your average Japanese doesn't have the same incentive to learn English as any other ESL in the rest of the world. Media, games, society - everything they immediately need is already all around them and in Japanese.

Heavy props to those that make the effort to reach out though. Learning a language completely different from your mother tongue is a daunting challenge which the above lack of incentive doesn't help.

On top of that, english in japan is basically taught the same way we learn shit like spanish in high school. Kids try just enough to get a decent grade and that's about it. It's also usually taught by ESLs which is why they struggle so much with pronunciation.

>> No.1691067

>>1687760
True, English has 20 different vowel pronunciations and Japanese only has 5, that's why they pronounce things incorrectly like Korone did with "Pipe". Also some sounds don't exist in Japanese like TH(ð).

They are just like that not just because they are Japanese but also because Japanese women who would make a career out of streaming are the bottom of barrel in Japan when it comes to studying

>> No.1691680

This pretty much. The only reason there has been an increase in english-learning streams is not because they're interested in western entertainment, but because they just want to reach a wider audience, which is admirable by itself but if they just stick to Duolingo without actually practicing with other english speakers, then it might never stick. Haato for example could really use some practice with Coco since she apparently didn't speak the language that much while she was in Australia.

>> No.1691991

When you have a high school level of English as a second language even with perfect marks, it's not enough to speak casually. Even more so in Japanese education when oral practice almost doesn't exist and any reading and writing is centered around multiple choice questions exams rather than practical situations. And the longer you don't practice, the more you forget and it's not easy to pick it back up.

The family she stayed with didn't interact much with her (along being undesirable people) and she didn't have friends in high school outside of another japanese speaker. She has mentioned this in her streams.
