Been watching nene since the beginning, I've always like how awkward and dorky she is and her angle of being an idol and being a gintama fan was always a plus to me. Probably their craftopia streams is what I realized that nene is my favorite. But damn gen 5 was good, shame about the aloe thing shadowing over their debut.

I don't really remember the actual first stream, though I first got into her through Polka and membered both of them around the same time. It's weird to admit that I didn't really pay attention to her until she had that emotional episode the November before her new outfit. Though right around that time she was doing the regular lunch/Minecraft streams that I could always catch after work and I was more and more getting into how goofy and energetic she was.

It snowballed from her outfit reveal where I started catching more streams and clips of her, though if there's any specific moment where it really hit hard it'd be her VARK concert. I seriously underestimated what close contact could do.

First and foremost my oshi has always been Polka.

My first Nene stream was the one where she was making Membership Icons and came up with the Nekko concept.

That was right around the time when Bloom was happening and she wasn't able to join her Gen for their first concert showing.

The Hololive CN girls were getting graduated at that point too and Nene looked to be in a really bad spot because of her outfit. I wanted to cheer her on because she's part of Gen 5 and it was really disheartening for them to be going through such issues for what I thought was trivial things.

As I kept watching though, she really grew on me. She had her Planet Coaster right after the New Outfit reveal where she showed off her creativity and silliness with her doodled arms.

She then had "Studing Time" and Superchat readings that really proved she wanted to interact with everyone no matter what language they spoke.

What finally pushed me over the edge was her Birthday Stream, more specifically the goods she put out. The Husbands Card got shown on the stream and on the back it says "I'll never stop loving you." in both Japanese and English. My heart was crushed.

This silly goober tries so hard to make everyone happy, that was it for me.

I still oshi Polka but Nene is there too. For me they form a duo. Nene is the blinding Sun of cheerfulness and positivity and Polka is the Moon, subtle and ever changing - sometimes bright enough to light the way and other times dark and reserved.

The lack of proper Nene clips really sucks.
Whenever she gets clipped, it's only the typical 1-2 minute bit whenever she says something funny or cute. Don't get me wrong, I appreciate these too but I just miss the more casual clips, the way Maple used to do them. I miss Maple's clips. They had structure, were much closer to the actual stream experience than the very short clips are. Building her castle in minecraft, constructing mesa road, her going on tangents and telling stories. That sort of format really let her personality shine through much more than a lot of these short, one-off clips. I'm doing my reps daily, so I can at least somewhat understand her live, but learning only goes so fast.

I learned spoken Japanese by learning the grammar and then listening to anime and constantly looking up words in a dictionary. That wasn't fast though, it took years of doing it (I wasn't really trying to go fast though).
For studying kanji I've been using wanikani since July and I find it's good. Compared to what you mentioned, it has you learn radicals, kanji, and then words using those kanji. So you learn to read and learn new vocab at the same time.

My only complaint/warning is that George really, really likes numbers and the first time you run into the Japanese calendar (and he doesn’t explain why it’s like this until book 3) you might get filtered by the rote memorization.
