Honestly that's a hard question since I prefer more simplistic designs (but also like more unique art styles, for example VOMS or sigbird/meat come to mind). I think if you have one defining feature like an accessory that gets you farther than having everything feel like it went through some deviantart sparkledog filter. if everything stands out, nothing does.

1) I think simplicity first appeals to me. A design that meshes well with your keyfabe but remains simple... A lot of chuuba designs are way over engineered imho.
2) Sharp teeth are a nice addition. I like alt colors a lot, red skin is nice, though it isn't really a chuubas design that attracts me to them most of the time, I look for certain kinds of content.

People underestimate how important is to have a good artist make your stuff. Whatever they came up with, is usually good.
Most people can't understand what makes a good design good, but you can perceive it subconsciously at a certain level. People will feel something is "off", even if the design looks "good".
Experience does matter. The concept itself sadly matters much less than the execution.

This is the biggest thing you need to know. It can be expensive, but find a Character Designer for the design and if you need to, an artist for the actual sheet or Live2D model. Character Designer vs general "Artist" is like Graphic Designer vs Artist. Some can do both, or have some general knowledge of both, but you want someone who specializes in Character Design to desing your character, and someone who's good at Live2D to do your model.

In the beginning it doesn't matter much, but if you just have the spare cash to splurge or are at the point you want to rebrand, keep this in mind.

2. Very little design diversity in their showcase/samples
