What is /asp/?

A thread for aspiring vtubers! Whether your goal is to make the journey as an independent streamer or to gain experience and build a portfolio for agency auditions. Let's help each other grow and make it. Indies are welcome to selfpost, but shill responsibly. Share your knowledge, insights, feedback, discuss what has worked and what hasn't worked for you. And always remember to do your research before posting personally identifying information. That includes both in this thread and in your audition applications to agencies.

FAQ:
>Do I need a fully rigged model to be a vtuber?
Nope! You can get started as a simple .png character!

>I want to learn how to rig Live2D models, where do I go?
Brian Tsui (of Iron Vertex), Kira Omori and the official Live2D YouTube channels have many tutorials available.

>Where can I find artists/riggers?
vtuber.gg, ArtStation, DeviantArt, Twitter, Reddit, Skeb.jp, etc.

>I just want to get started, can I buy pre-made models?
Yes! Live2D models can be purchased off nizima.com (Live2D's official marketplace) or booth.pm (general Japanese indie artist website). Be sure to check compatibility with your facial tracking software!

>Where can I learn how to digital market myself?
https://learndigital.withgoogle.com/digitalgarage

>Where can I find some good games to stream?
https://twitchtracker.com/games
https://sullygnome.com/

>Twitch or YouTube?
The general rule of thumb is Twitch if your content is primarily based on livestreaming and YouTube if your content is primarily pre-recorded and edited.

>Do you think there's an audience for X, Y, Z content?
First, ask yourself if you would watch a streamer of your skill and experience. Second, do a check on social media and look to see if other streamers are already creating similar content. Don't limit yourself to vtubers, include traditional real life streamers to scope out a potential audience.

Audio is one of the most important things for your stream, but even scuffed audio through a headset mic is better than no stream at all. If your mic isn't due to arrive soon, what are you doing in prep, now?

Blogposting to bump the thread

I'm doing alright at 5-10 ccv on twitch as a m*le but I want to step up my game. I hate twitter and vtweeters with a passion, but that comes with the cost of not knowing how to game the algorithm for exposure.

Any ideas for special events or streams to drum up hype with minimal social media interaction? Or is that wishful thinking?

How did you market yourself before? If we have a better idea of how you've gotten by so far, I think it'd be easier to figure out what's best.

Honestly? Follows for follows on both twitch and twitter. I'm decently entertaining enough that if a mutual stopped by, they'd usually comment on my shenanigans. My strongest connections have all been a result of raids, though.

If I can toot my own horn, my persona carries the streams, but I have no idea where to begin clipping for twitter/youtube/tiktok. I think I'm less "clippable moments" and more "generally fun to bullshit with"

guess all I can do at this point is learn how to market? fuck

some (most?) artists will sell the commercial rights to your character art and design, but for a fee of 3x the cost in my (admittedly limited) experience. expensive, but it's worth asking if they'd be willing to do that so there's no issue monetising your content down the road

It's wishful thinking. No one makes it alone, ever. Almost every single streamer who's doing well now grew with the help of other people. Actively avoiding twitter or any other platforms that could give you the slightest edge is pointless NGMI behavior
you need to do everything you can:
aside from a model reveal if your account is small it will be difficult to drum up interaction unless we're talking a giveaway that will give your craft some exposure (artists for example get an easy way in because everyone loves art)

>> No.16194774

>>16194205
>something seems off if the commercial rights are not included
You're paying for just the art. JP artists rarely include copyright for it, but if you want to be sure try asking "Can I stream and make money with this? Am I allowed to sell merchandise of this character?" etc instead of bumbling with terms like copyright and stuff and then go from there and ask about it if it's still unclear.

With some artists, you can still stream with the art and use it for monetization, they just keep the rights to the actual art piece itself as far as literal ownership goes. If not though, you're looking at 3x price for sure.

Special Events:
50, 100, 150, etc follower count (on Twitch).
3, 6, 9, 12 month since first stream; or maybe since current model reveal (don't get greedy with subathons)
Birthday, Christmas, special calendar event (depending on what holidays you observe)

To build hype:
>Pre-announcement.
"Got something in the works for [event], details to come in a week"
>Announcement
"I'm celebrating [my dog's birthday] in two weeks! Would love to see you there!"
>Reminders
Every few days. Personally, I'd put towards the end of your week, depending on where your week starts (Sunday/Monday), so you can put out schedule and people see it's coming on Saturday/Sunday
>1 week warning
Post your schedule. Follow up ~12 hours later with the "My dog turns 2 on Friday! Party on twitch!"
>Get hype
Post on twitter, post in discords, ask friends to shill it, mention it in all your streams.

Social Media
I've found I get crazy good (relative) numbers on Tiktok for announcement posts. Add a little pizazz with some minor video editing, use that as your announcement. Stay as in-character as you want, but don't be the operator.
Instagram is eh, but give it a try. Twitter and reddit can be shilled on too.

6.5 minutes of starting soon stream? My dude, you're not building hype. Either get ready on time, or delay stream start for a few minutes.
You're talking over the opening cinematic, complaining you don't know what's going on, and it's your first time playing the game. Don't be a cunt. Either listen to it, hope it gets explained, and complain afterwards; or ignore the story and just talk about random crap.
You're asking stupid questions about the HUD "is this my temperature in celsius or Fahrenheit. Wait, obviously Fahrenheit, or I'd be on fire". Maybe, MAYBE, if you had an active chat this could be used to get them involved. But there's been nothing in the VOD by this point. You're male, so you don't get to play "ditzy girl needs handholding". Instead, maybe compare it to the HUD in base Subnautica.
You get raided, and don't understand the raid message, so you just ask "what does that mean", and it feels like you're trying to play on being a ditz? It's a (bad) word substitution for a well-known phrase. If you're ESL, fair enough.
You're tracking down the pod, you see it in your PDA, you see it on the screen, you see it... "let's figure out what this building is right here"

All this said, you enunciate well, and definitely manage to avoid dead air, both of which can be big problems.

>6.5 minutes of starting soon stream? My dude, you're not building hype. Either get ready on time, or delay stream start for a few minutes.
This is the one criticism that's weird to me. I always start playing at exactly 12 AM PST that's on my schedule. The reason why I start 5 minutes early every time is so the Twitch notifications reach out to my followers before the stream starts as well as posting notifications everywhere else. It's a common issue I've noticed that the notifications don't always appear instantly. I've been given notifications to Kongou's stream for as late as 30 minutes.

You're right, people don't get the notifications straight away. But checking stats on Sully, CCV of 3. I just can't imagine sitting in silence at my computer for 6 (and a bit) minutes, waiting for people to show up. It also feels a weird length of time, unless it's track length?

Waiting for notifications is fine! But I'd think you need to fill the time with something. I start, do a 90 second ad break to stop pre-roll, and then talk about what we're doing today, or previous streams, for the first five+ minutes. I then run a warm-up (normally geoguessr, but anything vs chat can work too, if people are there); and start the meat of the game ~15 minutes in.
I've tabbed out of streams before, because I was waiting for two or three minutes for the streamer to show and it's just BGM.

How do people feel about"chill" or "comfy" streams? Someone in the previous thread said it's just an excuse to not be interesting but idk, my viewers say they enjoy it when I have chill streams. Usually when I'm playing with friends I get really fired up, but solo streams are more low-energy and calm.

>> No.16203453

>>16201776
Anecdotal for sure, but it depends on what you're doing. I play a lot of souls games and do challenge runs of hard stuff, but I don't rage or yell and people found it endearing to see a high stress situation handled calmly. I find that if you're incredibly knowledgeable on a subject or game people like chill and comfy but if you're still bumbling through the stream it's bad.

>> No.16203744

>>16201776
Chill or comfy doesn't mean low energy. A stream is comfortable because the streamer has made a welcoming, relaxing environment, which takes active effort, and will look different depending on the type of stream. For a chatting stream, that might mean nice ambience, a well set up screen, etc. For a gaming stream, it might mean that it's more like a zatsudan where the game is just functioning like a backdrop, and the streamer can talk about their day, engage with chat, etc. You have to be deliberate in making an environment comfortable.

>> No.16203977

>>16203744
Yeah, I guess zatsudan is what I mean, sometimes I stream art and there's not much commentary vs a going stream

How do you differentiate"comfy" from low-energy? Is it just voice intonation and sounding cheerful as opposed to sounding tired?

>> No.16204090

>>16201776
its just because a lot of the time people bill themselves as "chill" streamers when what that really means is they sit on the stream just playing a game to no viewers and go minutes at a time without talking and when they do talk its short mumbled phrases that provide no entertainment value whatsoever. then they try to think of ways to describe themselves or maybe ask their friends to describe them or what their streams are like and all they can think of is "oh yeah youre pretty chill i guess" because they dont want to tell their friend that hes boring as fuck
theres nothing wrong with being actually calm and chill and comfy in a way thats appealing and effortful but a lot of the time "chill" is just a dumb buzzword for "shit streamer"

>> No.16205054

>>16203977
Low energy is your stereotypical, "hey guys, welcome back to part 19 of my dark souls playthrough" where the streamer has nothing to say and just mumbles their way through the game. Art streams, even ones where the streamer doesn't talk much, can be peak comfy with the right background music and occasional chatting. In an art stream, you get to watch the creative process unfold, and I know a lot of people find them to be really pleasant background noise, if not something they're actively watching.

As for intonation, you don't have to sound high energy, but calming and relaxing, which isn't the same as tired. If I'm watching a bored sounding dude play a game in near silence apart from occasional mumbles and words here and there, I'm going to stop watching.

Your natural voice is not only pleasant in and of itself but it's a LOT more manageable for long periods of time.
I wouldn't listen to a one hour podcast with the growly voice, I WOULD listen to a one hour podcast with your natural voice.

If you want to expand that gimmick to the point of using it all the time I'd suggest working on your intonations with the growly voice, you sound a bit monotonous, maybe if you can really express emotions well with that voice it would be much more pleasant.
I'd also consider dialing it down to like 70% or maybe even 50%, you SOUND like you're straining to do it and nobody wants to listen to someone putting on a voice.
I suspect if you do the growly voice a bit more subdued and really work on emoting with that voice (an anon mentioned muppets and I think that's a good image to keep in mind, try being sad and depressed, try being angry (in a way that's different to the regular growl), try being happy and shining, try being bashful and embarrassed) you might have a neat gimmick, as it is right now it's just a bit much.

Also, being able to do all sorts of voices on the fly is a LOT of fun, so dust that cheesy announcer off and give him some love too.
I'm reminded of Polka in Hololive who has a genuinely surprising range of voices she can do.

Throat singing is exactly what you need to do for false cord, specifically kargyraa. It's vague but trial and error is really all you're gonna do to get it. When you do kargyraa you're gonna have to relax it until you get a breathier rumbly sound and then you do the FC scream. There's the r/screaming discord that's full of smart people in there that can help you with the throat singing transition.

Don't just react to nothing but the compliment you delicate fucking flower.
Here's some homework for you; with the growly voice do the following
1. find an intensity in your growly voice which you can maintain effortlessly.
Mind you, not "train yourself to be better at maintaining it", EFFORTLESSLY!
People can hear when a voice is forced too much and it's almost never a pleasant experience to listen to it for more than 5 minutes.
2. With the intensity you settled for in task 1, clip yourself expressing these emotions:
a. absolutely ecstatic, you just won the lottery and your fiance is pregnant.
b. Depressed and melancholic, a LOT of self pity, whining and "boo-hoo"ing
c. bashful and awkward, You've just learned one of your few regulars is a pretty girl and she just called you her husbando in chat.
d. sarcastic and condescending, just say something with the most over-the-top sarcastic voice, anything works.

As I mentioned before, have "muppet" in mind, be a little cartoony with it.

>>16213892
Full gimmicks rarely work out because truth be told people only care about a gimmick if it's attached to a personality they want to watch anyway.
If you can find the growly sweet spot I think you can have this gimmick without alienating people who don't want quite so much violence out of the voice that's coming out of their computer.

Probably not if we're being realistic, unless you can either find people gullible enough to join yet another fresh group run by someone who presumably has zero experience or success in content creation but who are also talented enough to bring success to your group. Groups like this pop up all the time and either fail and cause drama or just hemorrhage money with no option of success in sight.

You can try but it's a long term thing. If you are a good modeler/papa you can help give them new costumes and outfits all the time which lower costs by a lot. You also need enough money to pay for assets and good art. Also hire a full time manager too and the salary for that.

the stigma comes from underaged children jumping headfirst onto the latest fad because they watched hololive in their recommended once and proceeded to buy $100's worth of stuff just to end up a 0 view and quit a few months later.

The graphics like overlays, vroid, and backdrops you can all do for free yourself, as long as you have an eye for design and some creativity. I spent hella $$$ building my PC but everything specific to vtubing I did myself and cost $0. Other than my time lol

>> No.16253197

>>16252855
Not sure if there's a stigma against it, but a lot of people get into vtubing (or streaming in general), thinking they'll make a stupid amount of money super quick.
That's not the case.
I have, absolutely, not had a meteoric rise to fame. But I've done a lot better than quite a few people on r/twitch, and twitter. My CCV isn't great either, but I consistently pull some viewers, and have a few fans.
Including sponsorships, I've made ~$400 over 7 months. Maybe that's on the super low end, but it's pizza money, and covers most of my non-art expenses.

As >>16252982 says, the issue is people blowing their savings on it, and then failing. I know this is something I've done numerous times in other hobbies, but streaming is one where spending big makes an obvious difference to quality.

Buying big at the beginning (model, rigging, expressions, bgm, overlays, alerts, emotes, badges, GPU/CPU, three monitors, webcam, mic, lighting, etc) gives a huge boost to how nice your screen looks. And it certainly can make people more likely to stick around.
My early streams were super low quality. Headset mic, handmade overlay, $50 art, and that was the only money I'd spent. They looked kind of shit, but I still got a following, so I bought and upgraded. But my early streams are low quality. Doesn't super matter, but it gives me a slow start.
Someone else I know started at the same time, with slightly higher price point, and averages more viewers than me. He's a better streamer, I'll admit it.
Second person I know started the same time, broke the bank buying everything (not super high cost, but still expensive)... And hasn't had their first payment from twitch yet. They're a boring streamer. It's flashy, and high quality, but dull.

Mostly, I don't like seeing people burn their savings for a hobby they end up dropping and not enjoying. Often because they then start complaining about it, and it's their own fault.

>> No.16253208

>> No.16253943

All valid points, and I appreciate you sharing your journey. $400 over 7 months might not be crazy profit but your following and content will snowball so it's nothing to look down on either.

I guess what I was trying to get across is that newbies don't have to break the bank just to start out, granted I did break the bank a little on my PC but I've been overdue for an upgrade for years already. As long as you have a PC that can run OBS and a game at the same time without combusting, you're good to go. There's tons of free overlays and Canvas is free for the functions you need. The rest is just time and energy, and the drive to learn skills.

You're absolutely correct! I think we're sort of making the same point - it's not worth breaking the bank to get started.

If I could do it again, I would DEFINITELY have spent more money to get a running start, but I've had a habit of buying expensive shit I don't need for a hobby, and didn't want to do that here (I've done it for TCGs, circus skills, biking, tabletop games, weightlifting, and cooking). For all of those, the stuff either had resale value, or I'd eventually use it myself. But reselling avatars is tricky, if you're a 0view.

I might have been exaggerating when I implied I didn't have chuuba friends already, but for the most part I think the wider community, including a lot of the chuubas mentioned in /wvt/ are kinda... not very interesting. It feels like chuubas interact with each other just because they are chuubas and not because their interests fully align, and to me that feels like humans interacting with humans because they are also human, even though we are obviously more complicated than that, and it makes a lot of interactions seem shallow as fuck, but if I was asked at gunpoint to do a collab with Koopa or something, I'd take the bullet since we're not going to mesh. It's just like how you have two regular streamers come together just because both are funny, otherwise you get Joel and Jerma's Halo disaster.

Can't exactly say we're chuuba enthusiasts like you could say car enthusiasts coming together either (though it sometimes feels like it when some spitwad chuuba makes a show of how they got an expensive artist or rigger) because literally any other interest is going to take priority over how well you can lean over or make your mouth move. I want my choice of content to speak for me, and to bring in those people who are actually interested in it rather than just becoming part of a formless hobby blob that doesn't represent me fully.
