What is /auds/?
A thread where we discuss our vtuber aspirations! Where it's agency-based or independent, let's help each other grow and make it as entertainers. Indies are welcome to join, but shill responsibility. Share what knowledge, insights, what works/doesn't work for you.

FAQ:
Do I need an expensive rigged Live2D model to be a vtuber?
You do not! A simple .png avatar can be enough to get started.

Where can I learn how to Live2D rig avatars?
Brian Tsui of Iron Vertex has many tutorials available on his youtube channel

Any artfags here? I'm curious about L2D and the neck. The neck is an important axis to create the "illusion" of movement it seems. Pretty much all L2D avatars display a neck which obviously isn't surprising. The reason I bring it up is because I'm wondering if you can hide the neck with something like a sweater for example and still have good looking head movement. I'm artistically challenged so I'm trying to find the right words to explain this.

Two specific OBS questions:

Is there a way to randomize my scene transitions, or am I stuck with whatever option is selected?

If I'm in my "just chatting" scene, how do I change my game capture source in my "gaming" scene without accidentally switching over to that scene?

No idea, this is a more odd case since its someone trying to do this as a learning opportunity and not someone I commissioned directly. I got a soft spot for people trying to get started in an industry and there was no real price discussed (plus I got lots of IRL shit to do since I work full time) so I'm gonna see how it goes. At least chatting with them helped me figure out some finer points of my character's design in my head.

>Is there a way to randomize my scene transitions, or am I stuck with whatever option is selected?
i don't think there's a way to do that on OBS. maybe you can scuff it with custom stinger transitions.

> how do I change my game capture source in my "gaming" scene without accidentally switching over to that scene?
use Studio mode. it'll give you 2 windows, a Preview and a Program/Live mode. you can set up what you want on the preview mode, and when you want to send it to live, hit the Transition button.

>> No.1569572

>>1569365
No, it wouldn't be on twitch. You wouldn't want your stream actually public anyway. So you could make a program that is like... a fake Twitch, just installed on your computer, that could be an endpoint for OBS to stream to. So you can see your stream as viewers would see it, and you see random chat bullshit in chat you can bounce off of. Maybe an option to 'record a VOD' from the program too, so you can see later how you react to the chat.

>>1569474
Or another website would work too, but I'd prefer an installable program. Also that'd probably be a good amount of server usage for no actual monetization, unless it was a "paid stream test" option or something. And you'd have to trust they weren't keeping a copy of your stuff as well.

If its just the illustration all cut up and ready to rig, 600 is about the right price for a fullbody. If you add lots of baubles and shit to the costume it might go up a couple hundred.

Obviously i won't share my stream here but

I'm getting to the point where i'm plateauing at 20-25 viewers and im not entirely sure what to do to garner more

I'm constantly doing shit on twitter, streaming 6-7 days a week, putting out videos and content, collabing with people, even joined a small-ish vtuber group

i'm sitting on twitter with (to be vague) between 1500-2000 followers; nearly 1600 followers on Twitch, but my viewer count is stagnating.

I feel like the fact i'm nonbinary with a male-presenting voice but using a female avatar is causing people to bounce off.

I need to do a "redebut" at some point, maybe upgrade the model... but I feel like getting that concurrent audience to grow is the most difficult part. My goal is to hit partner this year, i've got the hours streamed, the days per month streamed; I've even got a disproportionately large subcount (roughly 200-300 subs per month) but the viewership is so comparatively low that it's stressing me out.

I actually just finished up a full two weeks of daily collabs, and I'm taking a week or so without collabs because I feel like doing TOO MANY collabs might mean your core audience would feel alienated when they just want to see you, as opposed to other streamers.

It's literally just the concurrent viewers that's bothering me, I've had roughly the same viewer count since i was at sub-1000 and I just don't know what to do to break the plateau.

Pretty much what she's saying is she wants to produce it privatly for rich and famo- I mean, anonymous clients. So if you're interested, hop in the discord server, because if this happens, leaks could kill the whole thing.

There's a couple of problems with it though, at least from my perspective, so I'm not sure if I want to pursue it in this direction.

First, there's a huge burden of knowledge: it's not going to be enough to have just played a ton of games because the actual core conceit is to "lecture" about the games - that means preparing content in the format of an imaginary college course, where I'd need to be able to talk about games and people and concepts effortlessly in addition to taking the time to actually design what you might call a lesson plan as well as materials for each 'class', homework, etc. Depending on how rigidly I want to stick to that idea, at least.

Second, and this is related to the first, there's a question the format: I'm kind of attracted to the idea of mimicking a college course in terms of schedule ("meet" several times a week, like MWF, for a specific amount of time. However, that's a pretty big commitment for someone just getting started especially if I would need to prepare a large amount of material ahead of time.

Third, there's the question of the avatar: I don't really know what type of character would really work in this format. I was thinking it might be fun to have a character that is intentionally designed to be kind of unattractive, like a slightly older professor who's maybe a bit overweight or balding or something, kind of like the man in the video I linked, but I also worry that type of character might be so unattractive people don't really care even if they might otherwise find the content interesting. So I'm kind of at a loss there.

1 - don't limit yourself to structured "lectures" or you run the problem of just falling into the sea of hundreds of thousands of other "lecture" youtube channels, anime avatar or otherwise.

2 - don't do that unless there's demand. it works in college because there's more social pressure and encouragement to do so. more of a "captive audience" of sorts compared to just some vtuber's office hours. get started, and when you've grown a bit, as your viewers if they'd be interested in something like that.

at this point, the vtuber field is as saturated as the face cam streaming field is. but of the thousands, a couple who stick to it still end up 'making it', so there's definitely always a chance. but just gotta be realistic about it.

I would consider a redesign. The white hair, white skin, white clothing, and a white lab coat as you mentioned would be so washed out and imo it's boring and not in a really good way. >>1644870
The bow was just colored with a random texture brush on Krita, it can definitely change! Initially I had black in mind. I struggle with thinking of accessories though. I think a cuter bow, perhaps in red like you said would be a good start!
>>1644919
Oh wow, that's very detailed, thank you! One thing I was considering was having some interesting things poking out of the pockets of the lab coat. Maybe some scalpels and lolly pops?
>add cute science hair pin
That's a good idea, the hair area is definitely on the bland side.
>consider adding a streak of some color
Admittedly I am partial to the all white look to fit the albino aesthetic, but I did have an idea of their being some color variation at the tips of the braids. Almost as though the ends had been accidentally dipped into chemicals.
>add some buttons, cute mouse design or something
That is a good idea. I have commissioned an artist already to interpret my character design choices so far(not the final design, but to visualize the current concept much better than I could. Not finished yet, or else I would have posted that.), and she has very nicely drawn some ruffles onto the blouse but I like the button idea.
>add another cute hair tie at the bottom keeping with your motif. pekora has little white bows but they aren't that really visible. but that space can be another place you can add some flair.
Another good idea. Thanks for all the feedback anon!
>>1645074
As far as something totally different goes, I did have an alternate outfit in mind. I thought about having a gothic lolita aesthetic, but I had worried it would clash with the lab coat and with the somewhat genki personality of the character. But I suppose if the whitewhitewhite design is too plain in the final result, a total overhaul wouldn't be the worst idea.

Thank you very much anon, making a drawing like that was very kind! And it's also really really cute.
>i think the ears are a little too big
the massive ears are one of the details that I insist on, for personal taste. I was initially going to have them more realistic looking though, with blue veins but I was told that would look gross. But I think the massive ears are really cool.
I think I am going to reverse the palette a bit, and have the dress be primarily black with white and red accents instead of the opposite, and perhaps opt for one with a poofier skirt. You and other anons of have convinced me of the merits of not totally white hair though, I will try red accents, it does look nice! Thank you again! If you have an art Twitter, can I follow it? If not, or if that is too yab, that's totally understandable too!

Here is my take! It is about smart and subtle as a shotgun, but I think you should exaggerate your mouse traits and lab coat stuff as hard as possible to get a strong silhouette. This means both exaggerating their size and adorning them with accessories that identify you at a glance. I reccommend looking at rhythm game mascots for this sort of thing. That said, I am not an artist, much less a character designer so take it with an ocean's worth of salt.

>>1648774
That is really pretty, I really like what you have done with the hair accents, and the eyes are mesmerizing!

Anon who did the voice thing and read out the dead parrot thing here; I did a real voice reveal for my current avatar and it got pretty good responses

also if you search Vtuber Real Voice it’s literally in the second page of results despite having thousands of views less than literally every single other video on that page so that’s cool I guess

Anon I love the concepts you are describing! The QR code is remarkably creative! I will have to check to see if BALB/c mice are subject to that though, they're primarily used in immunology research if I'm not mistaken, so I'm not sure if ID systems vary between lab mouse breeds. I love your artwork as well, it has so much character, she's quite wiley! You say you aren't an artist but I feel skeptical of this claim! My original model was a lot more mousey looking, maybe just due to the proportions, but also because I couldn't draw anime ish girls yet! I also never would have thought to use rhythm games as a reference. I'm truly grateful for your drawing and brainstorming! I'm also interested in your own chuuba concept, you seem good with motifs. Also I am glad you are pro giant ears!

It helps that I am a huge Franken Fran fan myself! I only realised Frantic was being translated recently though! I really like your idea as I am fond of mice and rodents in general, and white hair + red eyes is a combo I adore in anime girls. I have a bunch of opinions on character design and why I think vtubers have similar priorities to rhythm game designs I should probably write up at some point, but if I had to point to one example, it would be Elizabeth and Lily from WACCA as designed by LAM (they have designed vtubers as well but none of them pop like these two mascots).

My chuuba is a gingerbread girl, who has a dress designed like a gingerbread house! I am trying to to draw and rig her myself, but I am a very slow, lazy person so it is taking a long time. Here is a very in-progress pic of where I am at right now. I have spent several days dithering over the chocolate blocks whilst playing copious amounts of FFXIV instead of doing any of the more hype drawing.

Hah, sorry. I do try, but when it takes an hour to do that much and 14 year old zoomers can make like an immaculate finished piece in the same time it warps your senses somewhat.

Do you think a basic looking character design is a turn off? I designed a character but there aren't many accessories or anything. It's not for an audition but for my actual vtuber personality. Is it a good idea to pay someone to elaborate on my design? I don't really have any idea for anything about her except that she's a corgi with big sleeves... Sorry if this sounds weird, i'm a little nervous about posting.

personally i feel that to many vtubers have designs that are to over the top and filled with colors the designs that i think are neat are the ones that are simple yet get the core aspects of the character across to the viewers and design choices that can be justified given the characters background or the idea of the character

Some of the most famous and recognisable characters in existence have designs that are extremely basic - Superman wears a red cape and underwear outside of his blue suit with an S on his chest, Mario wears denim overalls and has a moustache and a cap with ‘m’ on it, Spider-Man’s Spider Suit is just blue and red latex with a spider decal and web designs on it, and so on and so forth.

Simple is good.

Pikamee and VOMS in general are also good examples of this; despite being visually a lot less busy than other Vtubers, they still are pretty popular

I'm getting strong Kemono Friends vibes which I really like. You seem to have come up with some little details that give some insight into your character like the half-untucked shirt and the little sewn up bits where bits have been repaired, and I think that will count for a lot. Those bone toggles are really cute too!

Thank you! I was kind of worried since the posts that I see on twitter that get shared all have really unique and cool things with their character (for example, I saw a yokai(?) boy with a sewn up mouth). I was worried maybe people would want to see a more interesting design in motion while playing games (like more moving parts). I also like Pikamee! She is cute and funny!

Cute chuuba, cute concept. Suggestion, won't a more square, boxy crop top would reinforce the gingerbread house idea? Although I found the belly button door hilarious

So... heres my idea for a chuuba I was a bit shy to share it but i want to hear the honest opinion of people that arnt my friends the whole gimmick behind her is that shes a living drawing i wanted to do something that ive never really seen done by anyone else ive already gotten the design done and model finished but i still want to hear what people think

I think it is a neat idea, although it would work best if you were to do art streams or other creative stuff. I lean towards busy designs but I think your crayon style aesthetic has a charm that works, especially when you consider the popularity of stuff like Omori right now.
