from what i'm reading on chat sometimes, some players aren't just confident at their building skills. the location may be a factor too because there are new builds appearing, but too far away from the site. if they're building a huge project, they might prefer it to build on their area like oshi towns. the schizo tower at Phase Connect is a good example of that build.

To me the bigger factor here is the very nature of it, and you can see it in 3 ways

Because there isn't a designated zone where everyone is obligated to build, the result is that a participant is virtually alone during the building process. A lot of the appeal in these events is always the community aspect of it, where you are in a place with 20+ other people.

>Building is the main skill in Minecraft
If you suck at Spleef, or get eliminated in the first round of Speed King, you still have a lot of fun, because pvp and boat racing are random sideskills of the game and don't indicate your skill in general. Personally I suck at both, but still consider myself a pretty good minecraft player when it comes to actually building.
That's not the case here, ypour main skill will be compared and judged. That is incredibly intimidating for the average social retard (me) that plays in /ybc/. Having to build something good becomes an expectation, and no longer a fun process.

The building having such a generous time to be completed means there isn't a centralized time where the event can have a beggining or end, which goes to emphazise the feeling of point 1, Isolation. It also means instead of having a short but powerful peak of interest, you get demotivated and no longer care as time goes on.

That's what I see, at least. I feel like the idea is great, but it would need to have those points adressed first. Personally, I would instead give assorted prompts to the players (the randomness is a great way to not make people feel like they have to perform to expectations by adding the "it was a hard prompt" cope), make them build in designated spots in the same place, with a timeframe of 3-4 hours. Make it an evening event, which seems to be the best at gauging interest.

I've been thinking about why turnout is so low for this. Here are some I've thought of:

This is probably the biggest thing for me. It's hard to be interested in an event where you're only limited in that area far away from where one usually builds. I think more people would participate if they could build somewhere closer to where they usually build where a lot more people would be able to see it, plus it could also help with adding to a town they're currently working on so it won't cause much disruption on their current projects.

I don't think categories were necessary, especially for the small amount of builders we have that would be even willing to participate. I know differently themed builds would be impressive in one way and lack in another, but that's what the judging criteria is for. I suggest just one grand prize and maybe second and third places.

Taking the two above reasons into account, 40 diamond blocks doesn't seem like a good motivator for such a large amount of effort. This is kinda a small reason for not being interested in participating but I think the event should make people want to do it even for free, like they already do with their personal projects.

I posted a similar post, but the rouge janny (probably the same janny that YubiOP banned) deleted it, but yeah I agree with the first point. there were new builds happening recently like the Phase Village schizo tower and the black Babel at the south, but they don't count as BuildFes entries because they're built far away from the site. also, considering that the builders has to procure the materials themselves, it seems like a bad investment for such a measly return. (schizo tower requires fucktons of farming gold to produce quartz blocks needed, for example.) changing the prize to stacks of Nether blocks might motivate some builders i think.

another point i brought up is there's low confidence with the building skills among some players in the server so they're kinda discouraged to join. the problem is on the player side so i dunno how to actually fix it. maybe an incentive for newbie builders perhaps?

i think this should be more of a voluntary project to make a /vt/ colony at the south where all players would make their own settlements or builds and turn it into one huge city. sort of like Spawn, but on another place.

Well there's not much that you can fuck up when building an iceboat track. Just build something that looks vaguely like a race track, you can even google real ones if you want layout ideas. The creative world is still a thing if you want to test first.

For building thematically, you don't really have to worry about that either. InitialDoog is literally just korone-colored.
