Pretty solid. The game dev and the dude who produced the music both seem to be pretty cool homies from how they interact with the community, so if it's up to them I'd be kinda surprised if they didn't give the perms. It's really fun, but abstract as fuck and extremely challenging. I tried to play it numerous times over the years but always got frustrated and quit, before finally committing to learning it recently.* The game is played by aiming with a mouse or tablet while tapping on the keyboard, so you've got to really be able to pat your belly and rub your head at the same time, and it's a lot different from more traditional rhythm games where you basically only tap. I don't know if I can in good confidence recommend it as a first rhythm game, but if you do decide to go for it know that it's totally normal to have to start with literally below 1 star difficulty noobymode songs. Most people can probably pick up say Guitar Hero and play at least medium difficulty, or Musedash and immediately play maybe 4 or 5 star songs, but Osu just isn't like that.

*I had literally no sense of rhythm at the time, but playing a few dozen hours of Musedash helped a lot. I can even dance now, it’s fucking weird.

Even if you don’t start with Osu I can never recommend rhythm games highly enough, in general. They’ve literally changed my life. I had no rhythm, but now I have it. The way I listen to music has changed permanently, in that I can now follow way more of the intricacies of the music than I could before. I find myself listening to songs I’ve known for a decade and hearing new things that I could have never noticed before.

Beyond even those benefits, which are logical, I’ve experienced even more profound positive changes as a result of my rhythm gaming. There’s nothing I’ve ever done which provides such a quantifiable experience of progress. A month ago I could barely clear a 2 star, but now I can clear a 3 star with fucking hidden mod on. That feeling of seeing yourself change, grow, and become better than you were is so amazing that I started to want it more in other areas of my life. So, strangely, because of rhythm games I’ve started to take better care of my health. Eating and bathing much more consistently than I was for the past… we don’t need to talk about how long.

So, yea. I’d say do it, but be patient with yourself learning a totally new type of game. If you’re anything like me, you’ll probably have to start from absolutely square one, but it’s worth it. Honestly, just because you play fps it’s worth it. Shit does wonders for your mouse accuracy.

If anyone actually read that, thanks for putting up with my blogposting. These games really do mean so much to me and I’m just letting my heart spill the fuck out.

i don't know anything about osu, but if you want to try a rhythm game you might also consider taiko. that is how gura got me addicted to rhythm games. there are only two basic types of notes to worry about (don and ka) so it's pretty straightforward and easy to understand as a beginner, but it also gets extremely complex at higher difficulties so you are unlikely to just get bored of it.

I should have mentioned this earlier, but Osu has a Taiko style gamemode called Osu!Taiko. It's a bit different, and has a couple elements that regular TnT does, but you can turn them off if you don't care about ranks.

Control scheme is relatively simple, don is f and left mouse, ka is d and right mouse, but there is an additional mechanic. Osu! and Osu!Taiko both have these things called spinners which are cleared by spinning the mouse around the center of the screen. If you don't care to do these there is a built in mod that auto completes them but if you use it your scores don't get posted to ranks. Additionally, if you rekey the hotkeys to d and f for don and j and k for ka it becomes fairly similar to Musedash, but then you absolutely have to autocomplete the spinners.

I'd definitely recommend trying it out. It's the most popular gamemode after the main game, and the mapping community is very active so there's loads of content. I have about 1200 songs available on Osu! right now.
