What is /auds/?
A thread where we discuss our vtuber aspirations! Where it's agency-based or independent, let's help each other grow and make it as entertainers. Indies are welcome to join, but shill responsibility. Share what knowledge, insights, what works/doesn't work for you.

FAQ:
Do I need an expensive rigged Live2D model to be a vtuber?
You do not! A simple .png avatar can be enough to get started.

Where can I learn how to Live2D rig avatars?
Brian Tsui of Iron Vertex has many tutorials available on his youtube channel

If you're looking for a general use webcam, Logitech C920s (~$80) and C930e (~$110) models are probably the best and will work well with most tracking software.

iPhones will remain peak webcam and the cheapest ones are probably used, refurbished, renewed ones can run you ~$300 - $350.

One useful thing to know is what all are the required hardware & software bits for both live2d and 3d vtuber work, and what are the best to worst options for each? Like, for live2d, I know I need a design done up in a certain way so that the rigger can put it together for use. I know I want an iPhone X (or later), and on that you install the Vtube Studio application. But is that all that's really needed, then the feed goes from vtube studio into OBS? Vtube Studio also apparently has a cost for commercial use, but that's not listed on the site and I don't have the phone to install it on yet.

Basically it would be nice to have a sort of checklist people can use to make sure they know exactly what they need. Then probably a list of "you will want this" optional stuff like backgrounds, layouts, bgm, etc.

Anyways, here's for 3D:

>Luppet
Free to try, something like 50 USD to remove the watermark. Works with both Webcam and iPhone (iFacialMocap for 10 USD). No Virtual Camera feature, not even 1/2 of Vsee's options. However, it handles webcam tracking and Leap Motion tracking leagues better than Vsee.

>Vsee
Free, updated regularly. Works with both Webcam and iPhone (Waidayo for free). Comes with a Virtual Camera feature and a ton of different options. Not as good at webcam and Leap Motion tracking as Luppet. The companion iPhone app also lacks updates and configurable options.

>3Tene
Free, but it's not worth it. The only thing you should use this tool for is doing poses for shitposts on Twitter

>Anything else
Who cares

Here's for Live2D, thought most of this is second-hand since I'm a 3D tuber:

>VTubeStudio
The king for many reasons. Works with both Webcam and iPhone. Costs something like 20 USD to get rid of the watermark.

>prprlive
Freemium as in the good face tracking costs 10 bucks. Works with both webcam and iPhone. Has a virtual camera feature.

When do you think it'll be too late to debut as a face cam streamer?

The real facts is that the western indie vtuber field is already saturated. Whether you start now, or 3 months, or 6 months from now, it's not gonna get any easier. People do break out from time to time, but you gotta remember that it's still mostly a numbers game. There's so much hustle that you've gotta put in to even break into the top 1% of successful streamers (where you can break even on investment costs), and even more so to break that barrier too.

>> No.1476519

>> No.1476547

>>1476398

There's an actual mathematical way to estimate market saturation, google theory of natural limits.

I'm here to tell you that western vtubing and vtubing in general is nowhere near market saturation.

Yes, there are a bunch of new vtubers popping out of the woodwork. Most of them are fucking awful and will burn out in a month. The number of product has very little to do with actual market saturation, what you need to look at is how many potential vtuber fans exist and how many already have oshis. There's a huge amount of twitch and youtube viewers that don't even know vtubers exist, gotta tap into that with a novel concept and actually being a good and engaging entertainer

the only real answer is "whatever you, as a content creator, are able to maintain and continually develop yourself" if someone tells you to go for theme X or theme Y, and you don't like it, you're not gonna be able to keep it up for any worthwhile amount of time. pick the one that you like and you know you can work with for an extended period of time.

I have rough ideas for most genres that I'd be comfortable working with in the long term, but the idea of something more lovecraftian would be cool. I haven't really seen any male vtubers of note in that area, and most popular vtubers that do have it are side themes/memes like pic-related. Ina fills the slot on the surface, but she doesn't delve deep into her Kayfabe, so I personally feel like it'd be a good area to fill.

That being said, I don't actually know if that's something people are looking for, so It'd feel pretty silly to fully invest into such an idea if people would prefer a fantasy/sci fi character, which is something I feel equally comfortable playing.

>> No.1477209

>>1477092
>Ina fills the slot on the surface, but she doesn't delve deep into her Kayfabe
Honestly, this is probably a good sign that you should really be reconsidering what kind of kayfabe is sustainable as a vtuber. If (for lack of a better phrase) the peak performing vtubers aren't sticking to kayfabe, there's probably a very good reason for that.

>I don't actually know if that's something people are looking for
just speaking personally, i couldn't give any less of a shit what a vtuber's "lore" is because that's not what i watch their streams for. if i wanted "lore", i'd just watch a regular youtube skit channel, for example, Marble Hornets from a decade ago, where there was a "plot" of sorts and i could follow along with it. i wouldn't give a shit about a vtuber, during a livestream, where they're playing Minecraft, Apex, or whatever other game they're playing, constantly trying to tie it back to their lore and background.

I totally get that, and I'll probably fail trying, but I want to do things different. If everyone just emulates whoever the top dog is at the moment, everything just stagnates and becomes boring. Maybe people aren't looking for that, but maybe there are people out there that don't know they actually want it yet, or there are people that do but no one is willing to take the risk yet. I want to take the risk and do things a little different.
>just speaking personally, i couldn't give any less of a shit what a vtuber's "lore" is because that's not what i watch their streams for.
That's useful into still. What do you watch Vtubers for primarily then if not for escapism of their character? Do you just like the avatars, their personality, the gameplay? Do you prefer vtubers you can't understand or ones that speak the same language as you? Do you watch clips or are you always watching live? What do you like about Vtubers right now?

>> No.1477667

>I'll probably fail trying, but I want to do things different.
straight up, no cap talk, you're better off breaking kayfabe during your live streams, and having a separate series in kayfabe of pre-recorded works. something like what Haachama does. don't make your one 'gimmick' being "that vtuber who stays in kayfabe in all of their streams" that's just not gonna work out. (nor will it even apply, subject matter-wise, in most of your livestreams).

>What do you watch Vtubers for primarily then if not for escapism of their character?
cute people doing cute things
Hana Macchia has a lot of fun doing silly things during her streams
Pikamee has an adorable laugh and relatable stories
Astel has a great voice and sings very well
Aruran's commentary while playing video games is comfortable background music
Gura and Ina have really chill and relatable stories about being a social introvert
shit like that.

I don't want any vtuber for the game, in fact, I don't watch any streamer (face-cam, vtuber) for the game, because most aren't that great at video games. (Korone's gimmick is just endurance streams, but she's not actually that good at a video game, FBK is a Hololive 'gamer' but she's like Platinum tier at best in the games she plays) If I wanted to watch highlights of diamond Apex games, there are youtube clippers that already do that.

>> No.1488740

>>1485380
Not that I'm a big expert, but webcams can differ on more than resolution.
the really big one is light sensitivity, any webcam will work fine in ideal lighting conditions, but in low(er) light the framerate would drop drastically since exposure times need to be longer (I presume it's analogous to regular photography, I'm not an expert when it comes to video).
another smaller one is field of view, which would widen the sweetspot in which your model is capturing correctly.
NVIDIA has a piece of software that tracks your face digitally as if the camera is panning, which could be very nice.
But from what I hear it's really taxing your GPU, not surprising, since it's AI technology.

Serious non-vtuber streamers would get a DSLR camera connected to their PC, but that's a whole different price range unless you have on lying around gathering dust.

>> No.1489404

>>1488740
I think light sensitivity and field of view are the most important things. Resolution doesn't need to be higher than full HD. I tried using a DSLR once, but all my lenses have small field of view and low depth of field, so I had to keep a fixed distance from the camera because auto focus is too slow.

i looked at some of the competitive rates of other artists who did skeb commissions of the quality that i was looking for, and what the 'industry standard' rate for commercial license use was (it's 2.5x, so if a regular piece of art would run you $100 USD, one with commercial license use would run you $250), and I offered that much compared to their skeb's "Recommended Amount" price (pic related, not my artist, just picked one at random)

i sent them a very short written request with a link to a reference sheet uploaded to imgur. putting together the reference sheet actually took a lot of work because i was trying to put together a commission without using words. so i included things like cropped screenshots of 3 different anime guys with the hair styles i wanted, a stock photo picture of a jacket with a scuffed doodle of what i wanted it to look like, and a stick figure scribble of the pose i wanted. basically trying to convey every aspect of my design without using words.

it took me a couple of hours over 2 days to put together a reference sheet that explained exactly what i wanted without using any words.

Family Share keeps multiple accounts entirely separate.

the idea being, for example, dad owns a computer, has steam, and a bunch of games. son wants to play on the same computer but doesn't want to purchase the same set of games. dad uses Family Share to allow son's steam account to access dad's games on the same computer. to the outside person, there's no way to connect son's account to dad's account because it just looks like a son's account made its own game purchase.
