Learning a language requires constant engagement with that language. Japanese "learn" English in school and then proceed to do absolutely nothing with it for the rest of their lives.
Chuubas grinding anki cards for a full 60 minutes probably wouldn't be very entertaining content, so we get duolingo and streams where they attempt to use their 60 word active vocabulary to communicate instead.

>>14535507
Bae regularly does Japanese studying streams where she does actual studying activities and asks for assistance from jap viewers. It's a lot easier to study a language when you actually know it a bit.

1. Got demoralized by drama and bad health this year and didn’t feel like attending her tutor classes anymore.

2. Further demoralized and lost the goal of doing English Only collab with Coco when she learned that Kaichou was graduating

3. Learning English only became somewhat serious for her during her rush to 1 million subs + her desiring to do collabs with HoloEN. She has lost the fire and now has seen she can get by well enough with what she knows now after Umisea.

4. Learning a new language has an initial heady period where it’s exciting until you hit the progress wall and it becomes more of an effort. Marine mentioned she didn’t enjoy her last tutor class as much as prior ones and that was before all the negative events this year.

5. Marine is a self-admitted poor learner, she went to an all girls Catholic school and had a leg up on her Holo peers in that regard back in the day but squandered it by being a typical JP student who has no interest in being a westaboo.

6. She probably saw diminishing returns in new overseas fans as HoloEN locked in their bases and worldwide COVID lockdowns ended. Probably didn’t want to fight for an audience segment that would leave anyways.

7. She is already wildly successful enough and overseas fans make up at most 5-8% of her audience. Not large enough to seriously learn a new language in her already busy schedule.

8. Probably feels she can satisfy overseas fans enough with short videos with EN subtitles, they are an easily pleased audience.

Sorry but Duolingo is not an effective way to learn a language. Serious learning is fundamentally boring and requires a lot of work and repetition.

Duolingo is simply a game, and emphasizes progress over repetition and actually commiting things to long term memory.

Realized that by the time shes done learning a language (2-4 years) she'd already be done working for hololive. There's genuinely no point.
Also even if you can read and write ESL english doesnt mean you'll be able to actually stream in english properly. English speakers wont go for Marine; they have at least 10 native or near-native streamers, plus the indos. If people are already filtered by the averagely accented holoID streamers, imagine Marine, a 30 year old JUST NOW starting with english.

How many Marine streams will EN audiences watch before they go back to their regular two streamers? Realistically, whats the actual number of english viewers she'd get? She cant even collab in english with other JPs, and a good percentage (at least 30%) of her viewers wouldnt be able to watch an english only stream.
If EN was still pulling 40k averages with 70k peaks every other day like back when Myth debuted, making english would make sense, but half of EN has 200k views. She already has that.
Also westerners dont know this but Marine in english would filter 90% of the western hololive fanbase. EN built a very family friendly fanbase and a third of the JPs talk about licking loli armpits on a weekly basis.

Marine realized she will never be an overseas sexy girl.

Learning a second language later in life puts you so far behind the lifetime of cultural understanding needed to properly utilize it, it's basically just an incredibly costly parlor trick worth thousands of hours of time and research needed to fully acclimate to a culture you've never been a part of or immersed yourself in.

The investment needed to attain fluency is the true language barrier. At a certain point in life, you need to ask yourself whether you're going to have use for that language 10 years down the road. Marine most likely decided that she's not going to be young enough to make the most of her eigo reps after a decade's passed, and that her time would be better spent elsewhere.
