I'm working a story and am finding myself routinely frustrated by the fact that I have to work within the confines of the character. A lot of hologirls are too... not samey but they are all clustered within a similar personality blanket. And the more I try to force it, the more I find I either have to sacrifice story for the sake of the characters or sacrifice characters for the sake of the story.

Biggest downside of fanfics I guess. I want to keep writing but I'm unironically becoming frustrated at this point. I lose regardless of what I do.

Like what the others have said, the thing about fanfic is the limitations on how you could write a character without making it too OOC. It's making the best out of what you're given and seeing how far you can go for it. Honestly, writing good fanfic might even be harder than writing a story from scratch BECAUSE of said limitations, with an original story you can write the character however you want to fit into the story, but with an established character, you have to figure out ways to make it work while respecting the character you're writing about.
That being said, writing about chuubas is another thing entirely due to the fact that all we're given is a character, no setting, no story, or anything that we could use as a crutch in our writing. But if you're having a hard time, I'd suggest sacrificing character for story, there're a lot of amazing stories in the archive where the chuubas act completely differently from who they really are and people still love them

If you are who I think you are, by which I mean the anon that writes their fics in one document.
Genuinely I think you are better off making original fiction. Because if you are going to make orignal fiction then you still need to work on your fundamental flaw off 'characterization' since right now you use the name and 'character' as a baseline that you don't have to establish; in effect it's a crutch for your writing that if you're making something original you're going to have to learn to not use since the original characters you establish won't have the benefit of that, as such you're going to have to learn to make good characters such that a reader will at least get hooked onto the generally good plot and writing you have.
Because the dilemma you are is effectively a morton's fork; both decisions lead to a worse story in regards to it being chuuba fic. Sacrificing story for the characters kills the story; sacrificing the characters for the sake of the story makes it shitty fanfiction. The use of their image while having completely different personalities kind of works since it still has the chuuba's body doing the legwork for imagining the scene but it just doesn't work the longer it goes on since eventually the reader is kind of clued in that "it's not her". For shorter smut it kind of works for some people since in those scenarios they're just imagining fucking their oshi/chuuba they find hot, but for the long form work you do it's not going to work in the long term as you're not making good fanfic at that point.
Honestly if you drop writing chuubas and just make original fiction, can you drop like a link to your new work. It may not be chuubas but you make good plots that hit hard such that I want to follow your work even if you stop writing chuuba fic.

Fanfic is a double edged sword. People are more willing to give shitty writing a pass because half the work is done for you: characters are established, so people let their imagination do the work so you can prod it properly. Writing an actual engaging original is so many orders of magnitude harder.

To note: the general annoyance when an OC is introduced to the story. Ignoring all probable reasons for the author introducing them, the OC suffers from a drawback: being only as good as the author is at writing, and having no backing from the reader, which makes them stick out like a sore thumb. In order to rectify this, authors will devote entire chapters to developing this character, only to discover their writing isn't very good and no one really cares.

This is just an illustration of one of the many blind spots writing fanfiction can develop, which only huge amounts of long form writing can solve. Good luck if you try, but I never had the motivation or really the skill. I suppose that's why some people spend years writing their books. It's really hard, especially if you're a better reader than you are a writer.

It's that people here don't actually write Fubuki, they write some character people CALL Fubuki. The first good fic of Fubuki made people go "Oh wow, that's a really well written story, I think I like Fubuki now" and went on to write THEIR Fubuki who also had a different personality which was still not really the actual Fubuki. The answer is that the Fubuki used here doesn't exist. People use a blank character with fox traits (sometimes not even that) and add a personality to it that is original, but the readers can't really tell anyway and since the story is well written the character, "Fubuki", clicks with them. It's easy to write about Fubuki because again, that's not Fubuki you're writing about, it's a blank slate of a character that people collectively accept as "Fubuki". Out of all characters I've read from here, she's one of the only ones who I've never thought "Oh yeah that sounds like her". I used to think it was a bit sad, but now I realize it's only natural.

Now I know I said I wasn't gonna continue this series, but I was taking a break from writing my long fic and had the urge to continue this again. I will say that I'm not gonna update this consistently, it's not a priority of mine but I will work on it in the background.

We did a poll like last month. The results were basically that we have like 7 writers that drop a story more than twice a week, 8 or so once a week, then 13(?) once a month. Those 10 frequent authors have a story count of 20-50 (lots of variation but it's hard to get accurate data here).
