/auds/ Thread # 19

Question of the Thread: Should we rebrand /auds/ to something else? More applicable to starting indie vtubers?

What is /auds/?
A thread where we discuss our vtuber aspirations! Where it's agency-based or independent, let's help each other grow and make it as entertainers. Indies are welcome to join, but shill responsibility. Share what knowledge, insights, what works/doesn't work for you.

FAQ:
Do I need an expensive rigged Live2D model to be a vtuber?
You do not! A simple .png avatar can be enough to get started.

Where can I learn how to Live2D rig avatars?
Brian Tsui of Iron Vertex has many tutorials available on his youtube channel

[Microphone Copy Pasta]

Here's a few tips for all of you about microphones for all of you:

First:
-If you are starting, take a look at what you have around, maybe your gaming headset will be good enough to start.
-If you have a rockband mic laying around stored in some box, it may do the job too, stick a pantyhose on top of it to stop plosives, cut a hole on a ceral box to have it serve as a mic stand and voi-lá. This used to be the beginner youtuber special back in 2011~2013 and it worked very well.
-Check the noise reduction filters and equalization in OBS (or maybe use NVIDIA RTX Voice if your card is compatible) for some boost in quality.
The important is to start.
-Study mic technique, a lot of quality improvement can be done without spending a cent:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ty8YLqOmbV4
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lAKnCEsZ_og

After you begin and you look into into buying a mic to improve your audio quality keep in mind a few things:
-"pro" audio requires a lot of investment in equipment, acoustic treatment, mixing, etc. A lot of your favorite vtubers and regular youtuber and streamers don't have it and do just fine.
-USB mics are generally not the top end of the microphones contrary to what Blue's marketing team may want you to believe, but a good quality one is more than serviceable. If you're not that tech inclined and want an all-in-one quick solution, consider one.
- A good XLR mic, a boom arm, a pop filer and good audio interface will be enough. Don't get lost chasing "the best", don't get lost into the audiophole rabbit hole, it'll cost you a lot of for increasingly diminishing returns that most of your
viewers and won't notice.
- If you are on a tight budget, look for dynamic microphones, a Shure SM-48 with a windscreen, an XLR-to-USB adapter or a cheap audio interface will be cheaper and beat in quality most USB mics at thrice the price.
-Take into consideration your needs - lot of streamers, for example just use condenser mics because it's "studio quality" but can't get the quality they may potentially output or do anything that will really benefit from having one (like raw music vocals to for mixing).
-Going off from the last point, if you are not recording music (I don't mean Karaoke streams with some reverb kicked in, I mean actually recording vocals for mixes or professional voice overs) consider dynamic mics instead of condensers like most big streamers do, it'll save you a lot of headaches.

About Mic types, there are basically two that matter for you.
Condenser mics:
- A lot of people who do livestreams use these; They are your Blue Yetis, AT2020s and similar.
-Usually are called studio mics, and there's a reason for that. While give you a nice voice recording with a fuller range of capture, to make the most out of them you need a controlled, studio environment.
-They are more expensive by themselves, often require more accessories (not only a boom arm, but shock mouths and the like), and are often overly sensitive (which is why you get a lot of mouse and keyboard noises when people are playing).
-To make them sound the best they can will require acoustic treatment of the room you record (because they are sensitive and capture the sound waves bouncing on hard surfaces and that messes with your quality) or home-made recording studio/booth (or a makeshift one, like getting inside of a closet full of clothes or recording inside a pillow for).

Dynamics mics:
-These are the stage mics, most of you will be familiar with handheld ones stick with the little ball on top of it (but many can have different shapes and look as "studio-like" as the Condensers).
-They're usually very good at not capturing the noise that's not immediately in front of them, which is why they're used for concerts, churches, TV, and even presidential speeches (US presidents have been speaking into SM-57s for a many decades now).
- That means you don't really need to have an acoustically treated room and the clicks and clacks of your keyboard and mouse won't be picked so easily, which makes them great for home studios.
- While dynamics can get expensive, due to their construction they'll be less expensive than Condensers. The legendary industry-standard Shure SM58, for example, costs 100 bucks, and even the top models like the RE20 are way cheaper than the high end condensers that cost thousands of dollars.
- Dynamic can also be used for studio recordings - a lot of Rock vocals are recorded on Shure SM-58s because it's gritty; a ton of podcatst and radio studios use the Shure SM-7B (with Joe Rogan being the most famous example), NPR uses the Electro Voice RE27.
- Dynamics however are not as sensitive a as Condensers, they're not ideal for most musicians doing studio recordings unless we're talking rock/metal vocals.

Hope it'll be of use for all of you.
And sorry for double spaces but it's a lot of information and I wanted it to look organized.
Godspeed, anons!
And good luck!

I honestly don't give a shit about technical dickwaving, hopefully you don't try to push that angle. I watch streamers for how entertaining they are. If I'm going to watch someone I dont know, I'd like to have a good "intro clip" video to get a feel for them. Honestly vshojo's intro videos for their members are good at this concept. But for pre-debut, no idea. Maybe see how nijisanji & hololive lead up to their debuts. Silhouettes, design images as they get closer, little snippets of characterization...

But I don't know if I feel like helping company management too much while I'm trying to get started as an indie.

This is a bad idea.
They do it in that way because they are big companies with a pre-established viewer base.
A new company without a viewer base should be advertising in the same way any indie should, not copying the equivalent of a mega corporation.
What you're suggesting is the equivalent of a small company to try and copy a Tesla or Google product unveiling.

You're basically yelling at someone with a Bugatti or any other high-end luxury car that your 1994 Ford pickup is the same car as theirs. Plain and simple fact is that they're not. You can't just slap IR on a camera and be done with it. You need software that corresponds to that IR solution in a way that is open to developers. Outside of Apple, that's not going to happen. FaceID has been out for 3+ years now. It's taken this long to get VTuber apps for it. There will not be a webcam-solution in the near future, if at all.

Aspiring VTubers need to accept that there is no cheap way to get high-quality tracking. Either they invest in an iPhone, or they will always be limited by their webcam. Same goes for their model, rigging, etc. This was never a cheap hobby. It will not become a cheap one.

Yes, lots.

The trick is to go on DeepL in two tabs and translate it to JP, then back, so you can get a rough idea of if your meaning is being changed by accident.

I find that avoiding contractions and speaking in a very technical way makes the translation work better--using phrases like "this boy" instead of "he" etc.

You actually can get bullied by TOS on Skeb if you do your own translation.

I just use DeepL on the side to test/check my translation in advance, then enter it in English. It translates the same.

It's better to do it that way because most JP artists have rudimentary English skills and will try their best to double-check against the English for anything that is unclear--which includes things like names, poses (if you don't have a picture ref of them) and personality traits (I've learned that "smug" doesn't translate particularly well, but nobody's gotten it wrong so far.)

You'd probably want an HDMI splitter. PS4 can blank out music or video that the game dev decides shouldn't be streamed, but its done using something stripped out when using an HDMI splitter. I'm someone who has and still commissions artists several times for my personal projects, here are some tips. This is mainly for the standard digital png drawings.

1. If you're having trouble finding an artist, a great thing you can do is to go to communities/subreddits of games that are highly susceptible to anime fan art, such as Touhou, DDLC, etc, sort by the OC filter and find any OC art to your tastes, then get in touch with the artist, 90% of the time they will be open for commissions. This is great because you'll also be helping out lesser known artists as the same time.

2.Do a background check on the artist, mainly check their twitter, do they seem like drama magnets and/or are heavily political or is all they do on twitter is retweet other anime art? I find working with artists who do the latter are very easy and pleasant to work with

3. Get a contract, especially for big commissions, contracts help both you and the artist by preventing misunderstandings and making sure you're both on the exact same page with what to expect. You CAN use those template contracts you can find for free, but for something 100% rock solid you'll want to get a lawyer to make one if it's a huge, expensive commission. I personally use a 1 page template contract because that's good enough for what i need, but in one case I paid a lawyer to make one because I needed something absolutely solid as it was a huge project.

The cool/sad thing about art commissions is that it's a buyers market, unless you're looking for something extremely specific, there are tons of artists to chose from who will be more then happy to help you out, you just have to put effort into finding them.

When getting your design I would highly suggest running it past several people you have confidence in and tell them to be brutally honest. A design you like doesn't mean people will like it, don't skimp.

Twitter networking is incredibly important but getting someone to follow you isn't the end of it, following people on Twitter is easy, DM and form genuine connections with them in private and interact frequently in public, @ them for posts and shout out people.

Find a niche but don't shoehorn yourself to something that doesn't get views. Liking what you do is important but if it's too niche growth in the west will be incredibly difficult.

Make sure to make a consistent schedule and keep to it, be it day, hour, length you have to be consistent.

Links on Twitter are generally poor for engagement since Twitter pushes those tweets lower than posts with media in them. If you are making shorts keep them under a minute so they can be uploaded directly to Twitter.

When you sit down to stream have a list, physical or otherwise, of potential fall back topics for when you inevitably run out of commentary. Things you watched, anecdotes, personal stories etc all work.

>> No.1448321

>Links on Twitter are generally poor for engagement since Twitter pushes those tweets lower than posts with media in them.

>> No.1448404

>>1448321
It's not smart at least when you're starting out. Obviously you have to have some things linked at some point, but I was finding more engagement and profile clicks when I didn't include links. Honestly your best bet would be posting memes that announce your stuff and directing people in text where they can find it.

To put in perspective, Omochi has been fully booked up to 2022 since last November.

i'm pretty confident in my singing so i try to put '+ singing' in my titles regardless of game, so i think it pulls more people. my first stream was ungodly early in the morning diamond tft games and some people hopped in and followed, so lucky + no other streamers on i suppose

at around 30 followers i did an among us collab with people i found on the aspiring vtubers discord which helped a bit

i hit 50 during a karaoke stream. concurrent viewers has been easy since i've had regulars since that first stream

i didn't tell any of my actual friends about this so it's just been organic random discovery for the most part. hopefully rigging my model will help towards partner

Yeah that was the idea. Someone else I talked to about the concept had suggested using the tanuki fur to represent eye bags from lack of sleep, and you gotta have a fluffy tail

Oh ok, I guess I won't bother now with the L2D unless someone bugs me directly on Twitter or something.

That's interesting; I tried streaming stuff like tft but I did it from a burner account so it's probably not at an interesting enough elo to catch attention so I might grind that offstream so I can just say I'm playing in diamond too
I also haven't done any collabs yet because I'm too dumb to talk to people properly
I have some regulars but they never seem to be on at the same time so I'm currently sitting at 2.4 average
And yeah only one friend of mine actually knows I'm doing this so most of my growth has also just been from starting out
Thank you for your story though; I really need to get off my ass and be more proactive I think; I feel like I've stagnated this week really badly

i went in with a 'i'm just doing this and i dont care what happens' mindset so it was easier to keep going without feeling bad. you got this!

>> No.1451835

>>1451636
thanks anon; that was the mindset I went in with too and I keep trying to tell myself that I'm doing the things I set out to do but for some reason i still find myself getting bogged down thinking about numbers, especially after this week. I'm gonna do my best to keep my head up though!

Think of your streams as blogposts: you „wrote“ it, it’s published, now you can forget about it and move onto the next one.

>> No.1452594

>>1451835
Do the part where you think about the numbers, but stop doing the part where it gets you bogged down.
You want to understand your numbers and use them to guide your strategy, but you don't want to turn them into an unhealthy sticking point or a distraction.

How dumb of an idea is to stream and not use social media? I can't stand Twitter or reddit so I don't want to bother.

>> No.1453065

>>1452965
You'd have no fucking way to communicate with people outside of a stream so you essentially are just making your life harder on yourself.

>> No.1453128

>>1452965
You need to get discovered somehow, Anon. Unless you are shroud 2.0 or a chess grandmaster (which means people know you already so why vtube), there's no way to get noticed outside of sharing your content somewhere.
