A break-up would definitely cause what happened this year the both pretended each other didn't exist very obviously. Another explanation is Mikochi finally confessed to Peko after all the years of wanting her and she turned her down which the heartbroken Miko was comforted by Suisei. And Peko realized she missed Miko but by then it was too late and she has a new crush.
Also why I think the events where they were in collaboration with each other are telling: Suisei showing MiComet dominance over PekoMiko in MP. The awkward almost muted Peko during ice race build stream while MiComet was there. Peko being happy and comfortable with MiKorone and Miko doing really good until teaming with Peko in the MK colab and Senchou weird moment when Miko hit Peko with a shell. Then the whole birdman arc it was PekoMiko week and Suisei took a backseat until it was over and Miko was ecstatic that Suisei called in the day after. And now it's back to MiComet. MiComet does a MC colab same day Peko does MC Peko decides an hour before she wants to colab with Senchou. And Senchou is a big key as well because she is the one PekoMiko went to about eachother. This is probably not even counting many pkmk fics that aren’t tagged as such, there are quite a few that are just tagged with both their names

PekoMiko is incredibly popular everywhere, not only with JPs. That small interaction during the sportsfes prep and the huge reaction and views it garnered is a testament to that. But what's surprising is how fast miComet is gaining traction, despite having absolutely no forced teetee or flirting and literally starting out as a business partnership. Hell, their whole business shtick is pretty much the antithesis of a yuribait. Not to mention, they only have a handful of clips (until very recently). Several factors could be attributed to miComet's appeal and popularity, but I think the biggest one is seeing their progression in real time. Being a fan of one or both basically meant we had front row seats to their gradual closeness, making us more invested. We got to see that "2 years worth of squirming" and can literally compare how they were with each other last year and this year. The progression is as natural as their chemistry. And they really are the last people you'd expect to be this close, even Miko mentioned that, but you can genuinely feel how comfortable they are with one another. It remains to be seen if they'll continue collabing this much or taper off like their other respective ships, but it's inevitable that it'll only get bigger at this rate.

I think it’s about their dynamic, Suisei is confident and bratty at times, certainly comes out as more social and “intelligent” than Miko, while she is the dumb/funny and slightly inkya kind of character. Meanwhile Pekora and Miko are too similar. Both hikis, awkward even around each other, and both lack confidence at times, even thought their banter is amazing and they are obviously comfortable shouting insults at each other I feel like western audiences prefer the other kind of dynamic in which they’re slightly more “opposite” to each other.
Many Japanese pkmk fics emphasize how much they are like one another and how that brought them close, while some western micomet fics show they’re different from each other but still end up together somehow. It’s a matter of tastes/culture I guess.
As another anon said too, many fans are new to Hololive and didn’t live through PekoMiko, I personally started watching right before it became super popular outside Japan and watched a few of their best moments live which made me like them more than I could even like Micomet.

Need miComet merch. It’s gotten to the point that when I see Suisei, I immediately think of her and Miko making out and scissoring. I can’t control my love for those 2. Feels like real love. A true romantic relationship. Not like Hoshi no Kanata or PekoMiko which was company mandated.

I think what actually appeals about PekoMiko is the way they can open up to each other. It's not just their similarities, it's that these two who could barely interact with other people talk like best friends with ease. The last Christmas collab they did is still something that has never been surpassed for Pekora going out of her shell on stream. Not Marine, not anybody else could ever get her into that state. So for Pekora Miko is the only really strong option and that's why the ship is so popular. It's more for Pekora's side.
Mikochi was the same, only ever being truly relaxed around Pekora, but I think that shifted now and she can be comfortable with Suisei as well.
