College classes typically follow a similar format in American colleges, 101 indicates a beginner class.
1 - first level class
01 - first class of the first level
the 01 is 2 digits because as classes reach later levels you can have more than 10. For example in senior level history classes for example, you could have 401 = civil war wartime administration, 402 = american government, 412 = european politics post ww2, etc...
4 being a senior level class, 1 = freshman, 2 = sophomore, and so on.
