I have a much shorter answer to that question. It's because Cover has managed to control the narrative everywhere. They heavily censor comments, they heavily censor their subreddit, they delete or edit VODs with mistakes in them and they selectively apply the DMCA to delete clips they don't like while letting clips they do like stay as free advertisement to newcomers. I don't refer to censoring blatantly abusive content either, that would be entirely understandable, but they censor people who merely ask uncomfortable questions as well.

Through this narrative control, most Hololive fans think everything is going great, even in cases where the talents are clearly demotivated. This form of propaganda on the part of Cover has infused people's perceptions with a fantasy.

That being said, there is nothing wrong with being a Hololive fan even if you're aware that it's not perfect. But too many fans think it's some kind of utopian dream coming true.

Realistically, the question of who'll win the youtube boom lottery was always going to be between Hololive and Nijisanji, simply because their rivaling companies were too incompetent and collapsed from within.
One comparative advantage that Hololive has over Nijisanji, due to planned construction or sheer luck and circumstances, is that Hololive has a near perfect talent pool size.
If you've ever attended a marketing 101 class, you've surely heard about advices against product pools that are too big. The average consumer, while prefers to have an option, is overwhelmed when met with an abundance of options and it results in less sales. Either they get too scared by the resposibility of having to choose and they simply don't pick an option, or seldomly they go into autism mode and hyperanalyze their options, in which case they'll be inclined to check out rivaling products as well. There's a reason why most products offer some choices, but usually not more than a dozen or so. Cars, cell phones, household appliances, PC parts, prepaid service deals, you name it. Experienced salesperson also opt to name a couple of alternatives but choose to omit others if there's too many of them.
Now, if we apply this to the vtuber scene, we see that Hololive offers a balance between having enough choices, unlike something like VOMS or upd8, but limited itself to a reasonable amount of options, unlike Nijisanji with its 100+ talents even before the start of the coof. Another positive effect this has is that the talents are mostly intervowed inside Hololive (there's a couterpoint however where Nijisanji excels over Hololive: their male talent pool is integrated much better inside the company, hence their superior numbers), which creates a sense of camaraderie and unity which is more marketable than offering people who might net get along with each other inside the company.
I don't know exactly if it's due to a conscious choice, or simplay a lack of easily available talent, but there's a reason why Gen 5 has been the last japanese new blood in quite a while. There's probably space for another gen and some vsingers, maybe a second Gamers gen, but any more than that and the freshly joining audience would get overwhelmed.
