the artist needs to also create a lot of extra assets, it's like animation, the number of frames you use increases how smooth it looks. for a vtuber to have a good range of motion without looking like shit they need to draw the front, front-left, left, and rear-left side of the head to make turning to the right look smooth. the program can do tweening and transitioning but there needs to be a minimum of a certain amount of key frames to make it look good. rigger and artist both need to put in a lot of work, if one skimps out the others work will be for naught

This is not the case. All head angles in a Live2D model are achieved using only the front facing drawing and mesh deformation.

There is, however, Live2D Euclid; a version of live2D that can be exported to true 3D environments and VR. In Euclid, you do need to manually draw several head angles, but it's not used for Vtubing and honestly I never seen it used anywhere outside it's official free steam demo.

Projekt Melody was "our" Kizuna Ai, way before Vtubing became what it is today. She does virtual camwhoring on Chatrubate, and streams on Twitch. She became really damn popular on Chatrubate, overtaking pretty much everyone in revenue, and 3DPD became unironically offended that someone like her is taking over their space.
She's also really damn charming, that's her biggest strength. And doing actual fap content creates a very chill atmosphere between her and her fans, both sides are very honest with each other.
