Might be a controversial opinion, but I don't think it's Yuribait. Granted, I don't think these girls are gay either, and Enna has (PL) talked about an ex-bf before, but this is just part of how girls, and especially awkward Asian girls, socialize with one another.

Don't mean to blog, but a lot of this comes from personal experience. My girlfriend acts this way, my sister acts this way, to some extent my Mom acts this way. Women are generally more open with their feelings and can joke around romantic subjects, be more touchy-feely and stuff, without all the anxiety men do, the constant self doubt of "is this gay? Am I being gay if I hug my bro?" Girls are much happier to hold hands or all that stuff.

This is especially true with Asian girls, who tend to be less outgoing and less sexually mature, and more anxious around men and relationships. So playing pretend lovers with their gal pals is also a way for them to let off some of that steam, and explore their affectionate side without being actually gay. When Enna and Millie talk about kissing Elira or whatnot, it's basically one big larp because they're probably all too lazy to get boyfriends.

What this really sucks for are the real lesbians. They'll often get suckered into all of this without realizing the playful subtext and misconstrue signs. I know my GF had a best friend who confessed to her in college, and took her playful banter as actual romantic interest. So that can definitely be a problem. I'd argue that NijiEN was constructed with "nepotism" in mind, with an explicit goal of transplanting an existing friend group of EN chuubas, with the goal of banking on their friendship as an engine, with corporate backing.

After all, is this much different from referring a friend with similar experience for a job at your employer? The counterargument here is that corporate vtubers should be evaluated for their "skills" and "talent", but in an inherently social environment like vtubing, I'd argue that having strong friendships, the kind that might take months or years to develop, takes precedence over whatever nebulous concept "talent" is, since the charisma and Te-te energy of good friends playing games together is a skill in and of itself.

This is the exact opposite approach HoloEN takes, which strikes me as very prudent. HoloEN gets all these super talented girls - a rapper, a pro artist, a cosplayer, and the girl who made the OK Boomer song - which single handedly launched careers on its own. And what do you get? The girls are talented, certainly far more talented than the NijiEN girls, but they have no chemistry and their social interactions kind of grate. Playing minecraft together is just playing it by themselves but with occasional messages back and forth.

Meanwhile, the NijiEN girls are constantly bantering on twitter, or having a laff playing multiplayer games. I think Niji realized that they couldn't compete with Holo in terms of raw talent, so they tried to attack where Holo was weak, and the fact we're talking about them now shows that it was at least somewhat successful. When you think of things like Elira and Finana setting up Beatmario for Pomu's IRL BDay, like, can you IMAGINE, say, Ame doing the same for, I dunno, Mori?

Bitching about NijiEN being nepotism is ridiculous because the group is built around connections, and instead of one person being hired and tricking the company to hire their friends, I'd argue that it's more like, 2434 wanted the WHOLE group from the start - Miki, Nova, Mint, Lyrica, whatever - and they just chose to debut them at different times because its stupid to debut 10 vtubers at once.

I mostly agree with you, but I also suspect that Lyrica probably didn't audition for wave 1. Lyrica was one of the bigger indies, and leaving that to join NijiEN would mean risking abandoning her own brand on a gamble. Remember there were people here (and elsewhere) who were unironically predicting that NijiEN's members would struggle to reach like 30-50k subs and would be stuck with audiences in the low hundreds, and I don't really blame them based on KR and ID's numbers.

I obviously have no evidence, but I suspect that if Lyrica had auditioned during the first round, her success as an indie would have earned her a spot in wave 1 or 2. My speculation is that she did not audition back then, but instead waited to see how things would play out. With Lazulight being a success and two of her friends telling her how the branch is doing, she decided to throw her hat in for wave 3, and obviously got accepted.

If anything, the fact that Lyrica - one of the biggest indies - joined NijiEN, probably after talking to her friends who were already in it, shows that contrary to what some of the numberfags here believe it's likely much more lucrative than remaining an indie.

Finana, Petra, and Selen had no connection to Hanamori. Even Rosemi's only connection were a few collabs with Pomu/Elira, they weren't exactly close friends, certainly not close enough to nepotism her into the company over their actual Hanamori friends that probably applied. Keep in mind Obsydia also were hired at the same time as Lazulight, there was no way Elira/Pomu had influence over the hiring process there while still going through the hiring process themselves.

In Ethyria Nina has no connection to any of them and went through the normal audition process. Reimu was a huge Nijisanji fan and if anything probably forced her own way in through raw talent and NUMBERS, she was by far the most successful past life and was openly a massive Nijisanji simp in her past life. Millie/Enna would have a pretty good chance of both getting in if they used the same references due to their constant collabs with eachother, even without referencing Elira. Nepotism might give you a small edge when hiring managers ask for input on how agreeable potential hires are or how professional they can be expected to act but they didn't just reserve spots for them or something. They are doing it because from the original people they casted were successful and they know more people similar to them. It was pretty sad. The one good thing I can say is that management did handle the situation well, essentially letting Rion and Hina go their own ways despite them being debuting as a bit of a unit. Their lore is that they are both students of Teika Academy, an LN-style magic high school. They have the same character designer and their outfits were both the Teika uniform. After the falling out Hina put a lore video in which she loses her memories due to a failed alchemic experiment and transfers schools, hence her new default outfit. The result is that Rion and Hina were basically able to split ways without either side looking bad.

Yeah, the likeliest explanation for NijiEN's hiring is ultimately just that they're looking for specific characteristics and there just so happened to be a circle and people near a circle who shared these characteristics.
It's not like there aren't other vtuber circles of note. Leaflit's crew has always run circles around Hanamori in numbers, but the content they produce is completely different.

Hanamori is just an utaite group that became vtubers at the end of the day and Nijisanji seemed to want people who could sing and had Japanese proficiency. It's possible they're making a bad business decision given the current projection of the branch but I really don't think nepotism was the main problem here.
