So far, Kiara, Ame, and Gura, said that Cover didn’t allow them to pick their own look/design. They got whatever was given to them. So should Hololive allow new streamers to pick their own designs? Or keep their old VTuber one? I say this because it’s to the advantage of VShojo’s current recruitment by not forcing anything on to people, and this may help them get talent that is more comfortable with what they like. You don’t want to lose a increasing growing amount of the talent pool by restricting their options.

I feel like they should bring the streamers in earlier in the design process, rather than just giving them a finished model and letting them pick what color the socks will be. However I understand why it's unrealistic to do so. They're working for the most part with famous and heavily backlogged designers and waiting until the new vtuber recruits are officially signed up before they even start conceptual work would delay their debuts considerably. Not to mention many of these artists don't have the time or inclination to do collaborative work, and just want to do a straight commission. Allowing people to keep their models has even more problems was phased out early in Hololive early on for a reason. It also doesn't really have many benefits as most people come in with, at most, mediocre models that would be thematically mishmashed into a gen.

Gen3 had bare to no input on the models, the whole generation was designed and modeled before debut and three of them auditioned for a specific role and design.
Yet they are one of the most watched generation of any vtuber company, maybe even the most watched.

Holomyth, as you put, had no input on their design. And yet they’re the most subscribed generation of the whole vtuber world and the most watched English speaking vtuber generation.

How does your argument square off with this? At surface level it clearly looks like whatever Cover did worked beyond any possible expectations.

Many of the current VTubers that are growing on their own to some degree based on their talent and luck, are less likely to give up their design, or be forced into accepting something they don’t even want. That too many restrictions by Cover may limit this talent pool, while the smaller and less talented VTubers would gladly take anything that Cover offered them. That's just speculation on your part. Cover doesn't allow people owning their models for the particular reason that -and I cannot stress this enough- it's a legal nightmare. Sharing IP ownership is the one thing that you as an IP holder should least try to allow because it makes negotiation/enforcement of IP harder to manage. So far, the only cases that we have is Suisei for the model (she was the original creator of the IP, but we don't know if she transferred ownership of the IP to Cover) and Sora for her produced music (I believe Victor Entertainment is the company that Sora is signed to). And based on how EN 2 is doing, Kronii and Mumei are the stars that play into what their character was designed to be, Fauna is also doing well while playing into her character at times. Then you have Baelz who's arguably their lowest performer and doesn't really live up to her character, looking to be the most normal member, Sana as well while she does play a bit into her lore, looks to be very frank and open girl. Gura's like the only "normal" girl that hardly ever plays into her character but she's more of an anomaly and have a lot of factors that make her blow past everyone.

If anything, kayfabe might be hurting Bae since forced lore-pandering is making her go nuts and filtering casuals. Personally, I still cringe a bit every time Mori talks about reaping souls. There's also a lot of holomems like Subaru and Botan who don't kayfabe at all and still do great.

A little bit of kayfabe helps keeps things unique (like Ina mentioning the ancient ones once in a while or Ame talking about investigating) and can sometimes create good content (Fauna being yandere about animals in MC), but it's more of a spice than the main course for a vtuber. I think it's better to do a little bit of roleplaying like that instead of completely ignoring your lore a week after debut like most Nijis.

Pomu usually loses 300-400 when a Holo EN start streaming something good (singing, Minecraft, events ect) against her. That's not too bad. She's the only Niji I watch so I can't speak for the others. It's likely Pomu also steals viewers from Holo EN but it's a lot harder to notice with bigger numbers that fluctuate more.
