Yet without selfishness (On an individual or collective level) society wouldn't progress. Striving to acquire things of value, being the best would inherently mean depriving someone else. And so the golden rule is what prevents over-excess and overly greedy behavior. Everyone wants happiness and materials, but there is a balance and when it is tipped then people (again, individuals or societies) will be judged negatively. That's the point I think Mori wants to make. Sin responsibly.

Things have been on an incline for awhile. Even with little hiccups here and there, the trend has been an upward one.
