Sauron was the starscream to Morgoth the actual main villain and way more kino/based bad guy of the whole franchise (no really, Sauron fucks around with his ring meanwhile Morgoth did shit like curse some dude's whole family to tragedy and forced him to watch just because he was insulted, also casually had balrogs in his ranks and everything)
Sauron was was just left to dick around with no objective when Morgoth was imprisoned after his defeat in the first age and thought 'why don't I just try to do the same thing as he did, why not'
Sauron was also obsessed with perfection or some shit and wanted to industrialize all of middle earth into a uniform 'utopian' hellscape (according to Tolkien's letters, I think - people debated whether Sauron was a Hitler or Stalin or modernity metaphor because of this but Tolkien rejected this and said fuck allegories)

It still pisses me off Tolkien never finished writing the whole franchise because the prophesized shit that's meant to happen post-LOTR when Morgoth returns and causes middle earth ragnarok seemed like it would have been insane kino
